Yamaha XSR900 (2022) - Review

The 2022 #yamaha #XSR900 isn’t a cosmetic upgrade or simply an #MT-09 with new clothes trying to pull a few old heart strings; engine aside this is a completely new motorcycle with a new frame, suspension and much-needed lean-sensitive rider aids.

Whoever did the photography with the drones is a genius. The flyby through the giant 'O' was great. XSR900 isn't bad either (from a 2016 owner).

I think the styling is such a significant upgrade over the previous gen. First gen XSR has always looked a bit cobbled together imo, just random bits and pieces thrown together. This gen looks much more cohesive and pursposeful. I love the "in the bike" seating position, classic 80s, early 90s look, love the somewhat more angular styling....all the 1960s/1970s rehashes have gotten tired. There are lots of interesting eras of motorcycling to reference, and this one does a brilliant job.

Took one out yesterday , Great engine , Hated the dash and the seat is the hardest seat i have ever sat on after 15 mins i could not feel my arse .

If they were going to season the old design I wanted the rear seats to be longer. Just like in the picture at 1:17. The rear seat extended to the same level as the tires and rear fenders. Without this much length I would have a hard time traveling with the side and rear bags.

Looks amazing. I had the srx400 gen2 and so glad they are in retro mode and hoping it will have a monoblock 600cc version.

Thanks for the quick review and great video. Looks like this one will stick it! My first road bike was a new RD350, so I have a couple of years on ya. But would definitely love to have this in my garage (in black with an aftermarket seat...)!

Just traded my yellow speed block for the new one from crescent Yam (thanks Brin) nothing wrong with it went and handled brilliantly but this is THE do it all bike tour Europe and upset people on a track day yippee

My main and infact only complaint with the MT09 is the looks so I may have to arrange a test ride on one of these. It's still not the prettiest but it's not bad looking either. It's interesting though that different reviewers have attributed it to different decades. Personally I'd put it down as "generically retro". If you could put the old seat on the new bike it'd be perfect imo.

Are the shock and forks the same as on the current MT09? Wondering if all the aftermarket shock and cartridge upgrades from the MT will carry over.

I love the unique styling of this year. Previous XSR looks cool, but was still kind of generic. Now they really have a 'one of a kind' styling. Looks like a cracking bike if you are just looking for a fun weekend bike.

Yamaha gave completely turned things around since they introduced that engine, and obviously the CP2, as well. Love this bike, but will yamaha put that engine in a Tenere chassis, soon, please. And keep it simple a la 700. Please. Good review Happy travels 👍

Passed my test only two years ago but I’ve grown to resent all these ridiculous gizmos like a six axis IMU, which manufacturers use to bump up prices and magazine editors rave about. So I went out and bought a 15 year old litre bike with no tech or even ABS.

The 1980's....young journalists with zero education....the TZR250 3-MA on what the XSR900 Is based on,was an '80's bike,not '90's....same outline as the original !

80's bikes were on the used market in the 90's, and cheap enough for younger riders to have their first 2 wheeled experiences on those bikes.

This new bike has a trail of 4.3 inches suggesting not a fast turning bike. It's more of a cruiser bike. On paper, it's slower than the previous gen when it comes to cornering. I had a high hope and wanted to like this bike but the geometry is turning me away. This leads me back to my option 2 which is 890 duke r.

@Alaberti I'm talking about suspension geometry. If you have played enough with it or understand how it works you'll know what I'm talking about. Don't put my comment out of context. A good rider can ride any bike fast but again that's not point.

it is a beautiful motorcycle. The 80's were not, IMO, a great decade for motorcycles. My decade of choice were the late 1960's and the early 1970-'s when motorcycles looked like motorcycles should. When they were simpler and easy for anyone with a basic mechanical ability to be able to work on them and keep them running without having to take them to a Dealer for service (applies to 4 wheel vehicles as well). But times change obviously and gasoline is no longer 30-35 cents a gallon and the Democrats have transformed into the Communist Party. Someone like JFK could never be the Democratic Nominee today. Anyway, all things considered IMO the "new" 2022 Yamaha XSR 900 will become the best selling bike in its category for the forseeable future. A motorcycle that is quite a bargain for what it is. just saying
