Hey bro, i bought the same bike the last year, and i'm improving it a lot for the offroad too. The first thing i did is change pipes for 2in1 that cross the engine by the side, not under, so i only have one exaust. 50% less weight from pipes, and 50% less for one exhaust. Then i bought an OTR special engine down cover that adjust more to the engine and i won like 3/4 cms distance to ground. Another thing you have to think about the pieces you had: WP front forks, bigger fuel tank, bigger brake disc, better brake calippers give your bike better handling but more weight. Now i'm looking for new wheels, trying to buy a 18" back rear wheel to improve offroad capacity, but i'm looking for tubeless ones, i don't know when i can buy it, still searching. But tubeless is much lighter if you think 21" and 18" wheels ar big.

Hey man, thanks for the comment! The best upgrade i ever did was the suspension, i think. That wp front and wp shock (they dont make these anymore, but YSS and TRX does) was the game changer in my opinion. I tried a 2in1 exhaust at some point but i didnt like way the engine sounded/vibed. Didnt give it much of a chance to be honest...was an "in and out" test xD

23L fuel tank vs the standard 15L tank already increases the weight. Larger fork & brake caliper also increases the weight. But i guess its a trade-off for better suspension & longer fuel range. You can however change the exhaust to a 2into1, that shaves quite a few kg's off of the weight. Great video & like your content. New subscriber here

Compliments and understanding for the renovation. I also changed a few things on my XT660R, but I got rid of the illusion that the XT would be a real off-road motorcycle. A real conversion would be too complex and too expensive. but it doesn't change the fact that the xt660 is a very good, robust and reliable motorcycle. The high weight can be compensated for with driving skills. My dream motorcycle would be a Honda CRF 450. But here in Austria it is only available as a pure off-road enduro. Greetings

My best dual sport bike that I have owned was the 1984 Yamaha xt600 339 lbs, 47 hp, amazing ground clearance and suspension super smooth at 75mph, To bad they don't make them like that anymore

I feel the same pain... I would say the XT660 is in everything better than the 600, except for some reason it weights +40kg (90 pounds)...and I don't even know why. Its basically the same engine, it is liquid cooled and it has an extra exhaust but... 40kg? jeeesus

Your justification for considering the XT makes good sense. I am in the same boat considering what to get as an on/offroad and love Kawasaki having a few already like the ZZR1100, KDX200 to name but a few. However, I think the XT will outperform the KLR 650 on paper and on the road.

I am very happy with mine nowadays, especially after i fitted it with a wp "racing" shock (and the front wp forks). Its a hell of a do-it-all bike, and after 96.000km i never had any issues with it (except transmission kits, brake pads and bearings, of course :p)

My unicorn would be a Honda XR 650 R 2021. By this I mean that I would like an updated model, with electric starter, abs, injection, 6th gearbox, an appropriate tank for long trips and probably a front end that allows you to take advantage of it on asphalt sections comfortably, with powerful optics and an adjustable windscreen. Surely all this will make you gain a few kilos, which could be compared to your Yamaha, but it would really be a sales boom, when a legend is revived!

@@OFFroadOFFcourse Not quite. The only thing they share is being dual sport. At first glance, their size make them look similar. But cycling, suspensions, engine and ergonomics make the difference in the XR, making it a much more comfortable and easy to use bike for both an expert and a rookie. By comparing just one item, you heard about the wonderful WP suspensions of the ktm 790 Rally. That behavior has the Showa of the XR 650 R, even without being inverted and having been designed 30 years ago. I particularly mention this motorcycle as a milestone from which to start again, since the industry focused on making bikes with more and more power, but at the same time much heavier, where the power-to-weight ratio is lower, while at the same time loses the weight and strength parameter of the pilot himself, who must have greater driving capabilities.

@@OFFroadOFFcourse looking at everything from DR350SE to BMW G650 Dakar, including XT600E, 660Z etc etc. It needs to cruise at 60mph on road with a comfortable seat and decent luggage capacity and then be as light as possible for the dirt. Impossible dream right? 🤦🏼♂️🤞🏼🦄

@@Reids-Rides not really man... :o Most dual-sports will do the 60mph no problem at all! With the engine being comfortable and well bellow it's max capacity. Usually its beyond the 70-75mph mark that things get tricky! The DR350SE is an excellent choice! With 6 gears, it can do 65mph EASY. Also XT600...an afforable middle-ground choice. The DR650 is much better for "endurish" offroad than the XT but maybe a little less solid on the road? Opinions differ. The XT is much cheaper though. If your budget is enough, take a look at the G650Xchallenge and XCountry. They seem to be very lightweight and modern (EFI) but I never tried one. NX650 (AKS Dominator), a good mix bettween XT600/DR650/Tenere660 and so on... Even the NX250 is nice bellow 70Mph Regarding seat and luggage capacity...I don't really look at those things, since for me a motorcycle is a canvas. You can put any seat on any bike (re-upholstering it to your needs), and reinforce the subframe in anyway you want in order to fit more luggage and luggage systems Keep me updated! ;)

So now you are not far away from the 205 kg of my 2012 Tiger 800 xc. If you looking for a lighter reliable and affordable 1 cylinder, than look at the old xt600 2KF from 1989. I hvave one and use it in Romania. 147 kg wet. I switched it to e-start engine and this winter it gets an fork and suspension upgrade as you did it. Nice Job!

No, i dont want single cylinder! My perfect unicorn would be: 2 cylinders, ~150kg, ~50hp, low maintenance. I also owned an xt600 (4pt) and it is indeed a very nice bike, but want something a bit more beefy and smooth for the road. This is "mein kampf" :(

@@drciio é dificil Bruno.. para mim ter 2 cilindros e pelo menos 50cv é "um must", porque isso seria a garantia de que na estrada era agradável de se conduzir. Mas isso nao existe. Tens a cb500x que é pesada e que nada tem pa ser uma moto de offroad digna (se é pa andar com jeitinho e devagar e com medo de estragar coisas caras podes andar praticamente com qq moto...) E tens a versys 300cc, que pa te ser sincero me dá algumas vontades... Mas a versys tal como a cb500x tb vem mal equipada para offroad, é pesada (tendo em conta que o que te oferece é retorno são uns 39cv muuito esticados) e para isso continuo a preferir a minha 660 de "cilindro e meio". Falam que a nova ktm690 e husq 701 já são muito smooth na estrada.. se forem só tao smooth como a xt660 mas com aquela cavalagem toda e menos 25kg que a XT, então já estamos a falar bem.... Mas salvo erro nao estão homologadas para 2 passageiros? ...e ultrapassam laaargamente o meu orçamento :/ A resposta é: nao, ainda nao ha nada no mercado que seja leve (menos de 155 a seco), bicilindrico, potente QB, e de facto orientada pa offroad (nem que seja os basicos, rodinha de raios 21 na frente...) A ktm390 é engraçada mas com 170kg, jantes de aro e roda 19 na frente é simplesmente um produto fail intencionalmente. Po ano lançam a versão rally todos contentes e pode ser q façam algo que valha a pena a minha atençao... Mas o grande problema é que as marcas no fim nao querem fazer motos perfeitas...porque nao querem fazer concorrencia a elas proprias. Se fizessem uma dual-sport de 2 cilindros, 60cv, 170kg cheia, rodas á homem, suspensao decente e protecçao aerodinâmica, partiam o mercado todo...inclusive o seu próprio...e isso eles nao querem. Daí ad modificações ás motos serem uma necessidade e não um caprixo

Tb gosto da Honda CRF450L, a Honda apregoa ser uma opções equilibrada... A T7 da Yamaha tb promete no papel com a exceção do peso... e das limitações da suspensão traseiras de origem segundo algumas reviews internacionais. @@drciio Ambas esssa motos são excelentes dentro do seu segmento. A CRF450L é um bom "motão de terra" que faz uma beca de estrada se tiver de ser.. mas duvido muito que papes 250km de auto-estrada sem dares em doido (ainda não experimentei mas...) Mas para isto já tinhas a DRZ400 ha 15 anos... esta melhora aqui e ali...mas muda o jogo? Duvido :o E a T7 faz estrada muito bem, claro, é uma pluma a comparar com uma R1200 ou com uma Africa Twin, mas é um bajolo a comparar com uma KTM690, XT600, DR650, etc O unicórnio que procuro é ali um segmento que ainda não existe mesmo. Olha, por acaso lembrei-me agora de uma moto que quase é o que quero: A KLE500. 2 cilindros, ~45 cavalos e "apenas" 178Kg a seco... Como é uma moto "tosca", tenho fé que com jeito se tirava de lá 15Kg sem grandes invenções... já na T7 duvido que se consiga tirar muito peso para além do 3 ou 4Kg no escape. O que não me entusiasma na KLE é uma série de coisas: -Nao é assim tão leve para começar (mesmo depois de ir á faca) -São só 45 cavalos... not bad mas... -Sao 45 cavalos mandriões, porque a moto ainda é de carburador -É uma moto mal-amada. Não ha muitas peças, não ha muitos donos, não ha soluções aftermarket -É uma moto tosca no geral... tinha de ser muito modificada para ser "competitiva" Mas era precisamente essa a moto que ia comprar (A KLE500) antes de me terem posto esta XT660 á frente a tão bom preço.

Hello Great Video. Im planing to buy the 660r as well but I have read a lot about the fornt brakes which are not the best ones. Im in interrest to make a swap - As I understood you took the fron fork and the brakes from KTM 450 EXC my question is there need to make swap for the tripple clamp from KTM as well ? Or the forks fit to the original Yamaha tripple clamp? Thank you.

Xt bearings. The steering axle (and bearings) is XT, everything else is KTM. I have a video jist about converting and old suspension system to Upside down (USD) forks :)

I couldn't agree more! The T7 is cool and all, but it doesnt feel 9000 euros better :P I wish I had 2 cylinders on the XT though... Did you see my last video, where I compare the XT with the DR? The DR is awesome off-road... my I am still in love with the XT. So soft.. so comfortable... so reliable... Don't know what to do :(

I am using some random footpegs I got from amazon (some cheap ones). I dont remember if I had to modify them somehow to fit, or if it was plug and play :( Sorry Yeah, I should make more videos with the XT...actually, I have been having a lot of work (training days and guiding tours) so I haven't done any videos, but I will be back soon :D

I have XT660Z and its 200KG heavy. I have YZ front forks and 2to1 exhaust which saves a lot. But I have complete crash bars around bike and all the upgrades you have too. You can probably save couple kgs on 2to1 exhaust and also the nav tower has its weight even it does not seems so. Maybe the better wheels also are a bit heavier. Have you weighted the bike with full tank? I was actually looking into switching to XT660R just because of weight but I think I will stick to my Tenere. Thanks for great video.

The XT660R (stock) weights basically the same as XTZ, the only advantage would be a slighter lower center of gravity...but then everything else is inferior (suspensions, construction, available extras, etc)

I also have the 660 Tenere and wonder how much weight the fork-swap saves? Upgraded with Öhlins back and rear and the bike runs awesome and the only downside is the weight.

@@PetterIvarsson hi, as I said before, the bike is around 200kg with the upgraded forks and wheel. But I added complete crash bars and other stuff. You cannot make it a 180kg bike with full tank if thats your aim. If you want less weight buy Husqvarna 701 or go with KTM525 and make it adv ready with bigger tank, cush drive rubbers in rear wheel and custom clutch cover for more oil. Thats how it is :)

Devo dizer que desconfio que o motor nao seja bem aquilo que procuro, mas só experimentando. For some offroad fun, I have a Suzuki DRZ400 with a few changes: Navigation tower that allows me to have a F2R Roadbook reader+ Ico/ case + GPS cradle, polisport handguards, stock rally navigation fairing and some Aliexpress lights. For some luggage , I have a rear rack that I currently carry some tool cases. For electrical stuff I have Locatis cables.

Yeah, the DRZ is very good, but its not an ideal bike for a big distance. Imagine you want to explore somehwere 350km away from your house...would ride there on the drz by road? Maybe once... But it would be a bit of a suffering :/ Thats my whole point...i want to be able to cover distance (even if not in ideal conditions, like you do on a 1000-1300cc), but with a minimum of comfort and joy (so, not really a drz400 :/ )

If you change the triple clamps (keeping the stock steering stem) any forks will fit. I have a video on the channel about that. I think its called: "upgrade to usd forks" ;)

I ride a tank compared to this, a Guzzi V85tt. But it gets me to places most people don't dare to take it. Only dropped it once last trip and was able to pick it up fairly easy. Upgrades will consist of knobbly tires, a better luggage system and bark busters handguards. Liked your videos so far. Keep it up 😁👍

Thank you so much for the support, Marius! The V85 is a be-a-utiful bike! I don't think I'd go for such a "out of the box" concept though... I tend to stick to more widespread brands like Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, etc... Guzzi, Benellis, Aprillias and such tend to be a bit less reliable (or at least easy to find parts and savvy mechanics). But this opinion is not written in stone... maybe one day :D The V85TT is somewhat of a scrambler, more than an Adventure bike, would you agree? I think it is a very interesting concept... they tend to have a lower center of gravity, and for the speeds we (normal people) ride on off road, they are probably enough in terms of ground clearance and suspension... I should test one some day ^^ Cheers and happy travels!

Hey Louis. Most footpegs will fit any bike. Just take your bike to a store and ask the guys to check which ones will feet... most of them will. Hey there! I am using the original xt660r fender (without the rear part, however, it is easy to cut/attach the rear part of any other fender to that one, if you feel you need it. I knooow! 2 bikes would be perfect...the problem is that I like to travel (and by travel I mean to go on off-road rides away from home). So I need a bike that can get me to where I want to ride. Have you seen my videos about the 3 day Serra da Estrela trip? We did ~400km on the road to then spend other 400km off-roading. Its possible, but not very easy to do that on a small enduro bike :(

When we made it, 4-5 years ago everyone thought it was weird and ugly..but now its very in line with the KTM standard (390adv, 790/890 adv etc). They learned from the best :p

Yeah I know what you mean :P Usually when I sell them I remove all the upgrades and DIYs and all of that... and then they are good cause I am a very mechanically-mindful rider... but yeah, my DIY endeavors are very "loose" :P

@@PetterIvarsson Tail tidy, battery to lithium, the crankrebreathing system, ais from the exhaust, changed a good amount of nuts and bolts to aluminum and removed some more random stuff. Indicators to led strips. grips on the rear removed Etc

Indeed, either that one or the ktm690r. I dont know..they are pretty good, but i dont feel like spending 12k + mods right now (especially cause for some reason i am not 100% in love with either of them...maybe cause deep down i know the perfect bike for em would be a twin-cilinder lightweight adv or something, and it doesnt exhist). The XT isnt perfect, but i already have and its already paid :p I tend to have a minimalist attitude towards buying stuff :D (A.K.A. dont have money for things i dont really need)

Hey Dima, well, the most weight you can save is by changing the original slip ons (~6+6kg) for something else. Mine weight ~4kg (2+2kg both) The 2 in 1 line would save me now only another extra 1Kg or maybe 2, tops The biggest advantage of the 2 in 1, and the reason why I am considering it, its because it would give me extra ~6cm of ground clearance, which is quite a lot, and needed. The reason why I didn't do it yet is cause I LOVE the sound/performance I got from these GPR carbon exhausts. The sound as a nice tone, and they are not loud at all... I am afraid a 2 in 1 would sacrifice the low noise which I appreciate quite a lot.

Actually if you check my other videos, i made one XT vs DR650 about a month ago! :) I owned an old XTZ660 tenere (1998), it was my first big bike, and I've tried the new XT660Z (2008+) a bunch of times... The new one is a bit better than the stock XT660 in some aspects, but I'd argue my modified 660R is already superior to the Z (even though it looks a bit less refined of course) ;)

I do realize I'm making a comment on almost 1 year old video, but I'm catching up on your vids as warned. What mods did I make? Adding weight mostly, which is totally against what I want to achieve, but it's usually the crashbars, pannier racks, Scottoiler, which I moved few times to different bikes, additional footpegs to stretch my legs, passenger heated grips (!) in one case (because I love my girlfriend almost as much as motorcycles), USB socket and a centerstand. That didn't bring me any closer to the unicorn bike though. CCM GP450 would be close, but it's discontinued. AJP PR7 is quite close too, but I wish Suzuki makes a modern version of DRZ400 with fuel injection and 6th gear. CRF 300 Rally gets close too. You see, I'm not experienced offroad rider, I have no dirt bike background. After a decade of street riding I gravitate towards offroad and look for an easy lightweight bike to ride, which will not rip my hands off. I like your channel a lot, it's fresh, positive and entertaining.

I haven't tried the CRF300, but i am having an hard time believing that it will be THAT different of the 250L (which had the big problem of severe lack of power) Did you see my review on it? Other modern bikes for you to consider: WR250R (never tried, but everyone loves it), the G650 Xchallenge and G650 XCountry, the KTM690, the Husq 701

I will buy a BMW when I'll be really desperate ;) but 701 is tempting. Powerfull though, a bit scarry. PR7 still on the top for its fairing. Need to save some money, I guess :)

im chasing the perfect sub 160kg adventure bike too with my DR 650. i fell for the addiction of buying upgrade parts. im 5000€ in now and considering another 15000€. a lot for an old bike like that but im building my dream bike. other people spend 20K on adventure bikes too but only because they are new it doesnt make them better. i considered the XT660 too but the weight and prize killed it for me, especially because there are so many more parts available for the DR650. recently saw an XT660Z and thought of it as a pretty complete adventure bike. the only thing it needed was weight reduction

In some motorcycles its it irrelevant because they will have the same turn radius with 43mm or 48mm (because the way the fueltank, nav tower and steering column is desgined) is designed. But in most bikes choosing the 48mm usually means loosing a bit of steering capacity. Fortunately on my bike, I lost a tiny bit of turning capacity (the steering radius became a bit bigger) but not in a way that bothers me. Its still very good At least its still much better than anu STOCK KTM =)

@@goranmagic837 I think you will be OK with the 48mm. My XT has the nav tower and even with that the steerring did not became a problem. If you choose the 43mm, I don't think thats necessarily a problem...as long as you have the correct springs for the weight, and as long as you are not a completely insane rider who wants to ride motocross with the trustworthy XT (impossible not to respect how sturdy and over-engineered the thing is ^^ )

I definitely will try another method as soon as I get a chance (or at least use another scale, just to be sure)... but I'm not very optimistic I'm gonna get a different result. For 2 reasons: a) I also weighted a XR125 and got exactly the weight claimed on the website (129Kg wet) b) I was expecting 182Kg wet cause I read it on some websites... but some other websites do claim 206Kg wet... So I really have no reasons to believe the measurement was very wrong... :/

Heya! I, like many others, am looking for the perfect unicornbike to travel the world around. Would you still recommend the bike even though it's heavier than you thought? I'm currently thinking of the F650GS (rather not cause parts are hard to get in remote places) or the CRF300 Rally (rather have a bit more HP). This bike seems like a good compromise (I know I've got to make compromises, though everything is better (i.e.lighter) than my 2001 Africa Twin).

It really depends.. if you want to go around actively searching to get in off-road trouble, than anything with more than 140kg will probably be too much. If, on the other hand, you are willing to travel on road "most" of the time, and go off-road only on "trails" and unpaved roads (but they are still roads of sort), then a bike like the XT660 might be what you need! If you have minimum off-road skills, it won't let you down, and it will feel great to have the extra oomph. Between the XT and the F650...hmm... I would pick the XT cause its really a great bike, and probably cheaper than the BMW. The only advantage I see on the F650 is the navigation tower (I am used to having that on all my bikes... i can no longer ride a mile without some sort of wind protection)...but I made a nav tower for my XT. Alternatively, you can get the XT600Z instead of the R

Think the Pamir-highway or the Mongolian steppe, but not just going straight through the Sahara in the hopes of making it to the other side. Did you mean the XT660Z? Because the XT600Z is a bit too old for me, I rather have fuel injection and a newer bike with less mileage on it. That said, in case you meant the XT660Z: I find it too heavy. It has more wind protection and highway potential but I rather go a bit slower and be able to pick up my bike more often than have the XT660Z. It's a good bike tho, I love the looks of it as well. You've got a good point about the nav tower, but like you said you can make a nav tower for the XT. I also saw your review of the AJP RP7, what a bike. I wish the brand would have been a bit more known and older, because it for sure looks like a perfect bike to me (even though it has downsides as well).

I knooooow...but I love the exhausts I have (2 GPR carbon), they are veeeery light and cold. The only reason to change for the 2in1 would be the ground clearance, but that really doesn't concern me that much at this point :o

Bro, i do have the same bike (color also) but with only one exjaust.. It saves lot of weight. And i suppose you measured your bike with full tank, whicj may notice the difference. Oem one is 15L and Gili one is more than 23 (actually there are almost unusable 2L on each side of the gili tank)

Actually my exhausts are already very very light. Maybe only 2-3kg more than the single exhaust. As for the fuel, the tank was almost empty. Maybe 3-4liters inside. The thing is heavy xD

On perhaps another subject, i.e, that unicorn bike ... on a budget of around 2K Euro, I recently took my son's '06 KTM 640 Adv for a good outing and was very impressed. "Our" favourite specs website states it weighs 158kg dry, makes about 53hp and similar torque figures, has quality, WP long travel suspension (11.8/13.2") and the seat was even comfortable. It reminded me of my old XT500 but with almost twice the power and not much more weight. Fortunately, my son is a motorcycle mechanic (LOL) Can anything else compare with those specs, at that price?

But if you have an 23L tank than its 8 L more than the normal tank. If you put it totally filled up on the scale its 5.5 kg more on fuel only. Plus I don't know what the front end weighs compared to the origenal forks. And the scale might be not that acurete. but its speculative. i bougt tha xt660x yesterday. I'm planning to do the same mods exept the tank i guess. your tower is beautiful! do you know what windscreen is added ontop of the lamp? And the vids are great!!! just go on and you'll make money on this ;)

Hey man, thanks for the push! I really hope you are right! =D About the weight: I measured it with the tanks almost empty. Maybe only 3-4Litres inside. Regarding the the weight of the suspension, it doesn't really matter cause I measure the weight in both wheels, so (keeping the bike level) the sum of both measurements should give me an accurate enough total (give or take...we know bathroom scales are not scientific devices...) So yeah... I don't think our machine is that light. Congrats for getting one, by the way :D About the screen... hmmm... I remember it is from PUIG, but I don't recall what bike it fits. I will ask the previous owner (John, from my videos) If I forget to get back to you, please remind me :P

A tenere 660 é em quase tudo parecido com a minha "R", mas é vem de fábrica mais bem cosntruída para off-road. No entanto, é ligeiramente mais pesada e muito mais alta, o que faz com que tenha um centro de gravidade mais chato no off-road "técnico". Para lidar com buracos e coisas em velocidade é melhor (é mais alta e melhor equipada de suspensões do que a "R" original). Não a considero uma moto para principiantes, mas é bem melhor que uma moto de 20mil euros e 240kg :D

Did you weigh yours? Would be really interested as well! My DR650 with 23L of fuel in it, a tool kit (including big tire irons) and small luggage rack weighs 177kg. With a full stock tank (13L) it was 170kg

But I definitely fell those 12-15kg...my XT feels much lighter than its counterparts, however, not as light as I would hope (maybe my expectations are not realistic :P )

@@OFFroadOFFcourse Certainly. I went that route. Chopping off grams to kilograms one after another. It will become a chopper one day :D However, though it can be felt, it's not that major difference really. At least my bike. I kept records of what I chopped off and what it weighed and in the end calculated I should have 182 kg. And I ended up with 186 kg. No difference on the road, no difference on trails. Anyway, my personal believe is, that building a better body frame and some muscles would help fighting the pig around. As well, moving things around, like oil tank behind engine from over the top of the engine, where it sits now, as now it feels top heavy. Or replacing subframe with something narrower and reupholstering seat (with new seat pan obviously) so that I can grip it better like small enduro bikes, and thus giving me leg length advantage. It should help with raised suspension. You did the hard parts, like getting used to the not very much working headlight, that however must be pretty light.

Tambem penso muito em por essa linha, porque a moto fica ca pança muito mais alta... mas gosto tanto destes escapes (peso e som baixo...nao gosto de cornetas) que estou com medo em mudar. Alem disso custa-me voltar a gastar dinheiro em escapes, se já tenho uns tao decentes.... veremos =)

Actually no... I had my doubts, but right now i am loving the xt more than ever. After all the upgrades it is a very decent bike, and the one that does everything i really need (including being as low maintenance as they come). Im not even bothered about the weight anymore...i actually prefer it this way :D

I have the xr'a 400 which is the best enduro! HA HA! But I can't ride on her :) She is my holiday toy. Now is bloody shit-vid so i can't go to Poland. I need enduro I need a trial!

XR400 is one of the most beloved bikes of all time... All XRs really :D Its a shame they didnt make it with electric start (its my guilty pleasure xD)
