In this video I share my struggle to choose between my beloved and ever faithful XT660R, and my fiery new passion, a Suzuki DR650 I met in Lisbon the other day.
One is modern, reliable, smooth, comfortable, and a bike I can show my mother in law, the other is old, rough, harsh, unpolished, exciting, performant, and a bike I can use to conquer the off road anywhere in the world.
Which one would you choose?

I had a DR650 and added a TM40 pumper with jetting air box mod.....no add on pipe etc, The new carb ($500) breathed life into this machine and totally changed the experience.

One day I might return to the DR650 and I will definitely upgrade to that Carb. Many people have said exactly the same =) (Un)Fortunately I have decided to keep the XT660R for now and sold the DR

Here in Australia the DR650 is legendary for being nearly bulletproof. It's widely regarded, by legitimate experts, as being the most reliable off road motorcycle ever sold in this country. Sure, by todays standards, it could be considered somewhat unsophisticated. It is! Yes, on the open road, it can feel a little bit agricultural. Yes, it does come with a few 'less than ideal' points as standard. However, these points (eg: fork brace, pegs, seat, exhaust, bashplate, oil cooler guard etc) are relatively cheap and easy to rectify. This is the motorcycle that well informed people use, with very few modifications, when they're travelling alone into the furthest regions of our remote outback. After extensive testing and exhaustive evaluation it was also chosen, and used in largely standard form, by our Army. The truth of the matter is that the Suzuki DR650 offers a rare blend of simplicity, rugged durability, proven reliability and impressive fuel economy. It is for these reasons that the model has remained largely unchanged for nearly 25 years.

If you're looking for a perfect 50/50 bike, hands down the DR is a legend. I owned one for 6 years, loved every day I had it. Dyno jet kit that puppy, gotta have an aftermarket exhaust and that will transform it into a whole new feeling! Also figure out what gearing sprockets will suit you.

I am sure you are right, but I decided to sell it. In the end, it was not about which bike was best... simply that i felt the XT would be more care-free than the DR. Besides, the XT has been suffering upgrades for the past 8 years...its almost perfect for what I need/do, so it would be a shame to throw all that ouf of the window just to save 15Kg Maybe I chose wrong, but can't be too wrong :P

I went from a bmw 2002 1150gsa to a 2016 dr650, at first the Dr felt like an older bike, or like from sitting in a couch to sitting in wooden bench, but the dr650 brought back the inner child in me I was able to play again with it off road, it took away the worry of dropping it, since I do most of the trips by my self, so at the end is hard to beat the weight and simplicity of the Dr650

60K KM on my 2010 XTZ660 now. But with fresh good quality oil every 5k. Have never added top oil to this bike and the used oil remains translucent/clean looking upon draining. She might go forever.... ;-) Great videos. I'll definitely keep coming back for more!

I have the exact same feeling on the XT...75k KM on mine, oil is always clean, never spills or burns any oil..it feels as fresh as the 1st day :o What a machine

I am witnessing a very very (very) good ytuber in the making and very much excited at that. On the what bike front you need an xr650r. Give it a go, dont let the lack of estart or fi deter you. Ride it now, thank me later! If not the xr, then the dr hands down. But give it a good engine rebuild first.

It depends on where you want to travel long distance riding or keep it for local fun. Dirty fuel and easy DIY maintenance - old school might be better. But the XT has a proven track record on the flip side. The drawback about the DR650 is that you need to do plenty of upgrades for the ideal setup. Footpegs, seating, jetting, lighting as it is all older tech. The XT on the other hand is newer and newer gadgets can be added. The best is to have both if your budget allows it! ;-)

To be honest, I feel that the DR needs half the mods I already did on the XT. This DR feels like it needs jetting (maybe), a navigation tower (for wind protection mostly) and... well, kinda thats it. The rest is smaller stuff you do as you go... tune the brakes, better seat, better hand guards, etc. The suspension has already been upgraded with hiperpro springs and to be honest, its so 938213 times better than the XT (even considering I have WPs on the front) that I don't feel the need to go immediately try to improve it further. it works just fine for now... it amazes me enough :P

I decided to keep the XT...and eventually installed a better rear shock and my oh my, the bike became much better! For now I am very happy with my choice... it suits my life style at the moment =)

Hey! The "problem" is that when I got the bike it already had 2 carbon GPR exhausts (2in2) that are AWESOME. They never get hot (its impressive) and they are super lightweight, and with 2 (x2) dbkillers it has a low but interesting sound. Also, they solved most of the "low speed stalls" that the stock XT suffers. So I'm not really sure I want to + spend money to get a louder and much hotter exhaust =/ On a brighter note... Since I returned to Portugal (I was living in Croatia when I bought XT660) I barely had any problems due to the bike having low clearance. In croatia that was a huge problem cause it was very easy to find rocks and steep steps everywhere offroad :D Its a decision I will delay.. maybe xD

Hi Diogo, once again I congrat you about this video, it has very nice content! Now about the unicorn it really exists and it calls KTM 690 or Husqvarna 701 or even AJP PR7. After I tried the KTM 690 (2019 and with a lot of modifications) I realized that what I was looking for really exists, is not a cheap option that's a fact, but the moto is comfortable on the road and excellent offroad as well. Unfortunately, the EU market doesn't give to us a lot of choices in this segment, but as I said before after I tried the 690 I really realize that what we are all looking for already exists. I haven't the chance to try the 701 and the PR7 yet, but I'm pretty sure that the feeling will be the same that I got on this 690 test ride.

I do have high hopes for the 690 (the newer versions, like the 2019)... but I only tested the 2010 (or maybe even older) version it definitely was not what I was looking for. But yeah, a "brand new" 690/701 is out of my budget for now. Maybe when I reach enough subscribers I can make decent money to get one :P ... lets hope that doesn't happen in 2089

@@dgugge7 well, take my opinion with a grain of salt cause I only tested the bike for half an hour or so. What I didn't like was how "hardcore" it felt. The seat was hard and completely straight, and the ergonomics were all enduro-biased, but those are the parts that can be easily modified so it didn't concern me much.. what really put me off was the engine: Too violent and loud, with not enough weight (can't believe I'm writing this) anywhere to hold it back, and very very stiff suspensions (maybe they could be adjusted but it wasn't my bike so...) It didn't feel at all like a bike suited for "adventuring", even after a decent amount of mods.... that engine just felt like a jet turbine filled with screws and thats why I never considered it again until now (I'm yet to test the 2019+ version, but I am convinced they have addressed exactly the problems I felt, and on the few videos I've seen, the bike really sounds much more smooth and tame, even though it packs even more horse-power now) BUT...if you are looking for a stronger, lighter, and in most ways better DR650, maybe you will like the old KTM...! I didn't like it cause I am trying to find "the unicorn"... a very light weight bike with the power and smoothness of a 2-cylinder one :P

​@@OFFroadOFFcourse hm ok i understand, Thanks! The 690 did get some upgrade over time (more cc, twin spark ignition, ride by wire) which all improved drivability especially at low rpms as I've read. In 2019 it got twin counter-balancers which made it smoother by worlds, comparable to a twin engine but it also lost quite some torque down low. I've test ridden a 2019 SMCR and the engine felt really really powerful up top (like almost unbelievable and really lengthened your arms :P), however it just felt really wrong to me in an Enduro. That engine is perfect in a 690 Duke or maybe a SMCR, but in an Enduro I just want grunt in the really low rpms which I miss in the new engine. That makes the decision even harder because each model has their own significant pro's and con's... I have unfortunately never ridden a XT660, but I did 20k km since I got my '97 DR. Aggressiveness and weight which you prefer on the DR compared to your XT are those things which lead me away from the DR and towards a 690 :D. So all a thing of point of view I guess. On road the DR is really comfortable to me and riding 300km on curvy tarmac roads is not an issue at all. On highways I ride at constant 110kph, to keep the engine rpms low and with that its only a matter of how long your butt withstands the seat. My Maximum once was 700km on the motorway and after that I had pain for 1.5 weeks :D Apart from that absolutely no issues with vibrations or anything else. Zero oil consumption between oil changes (6000km)! However if riding twisty mountain roads, I really miss some more engine power as those 46hp are only good for GPS-measured 115kph when going uphill. But I guess you know that from your XT already. It just bothers me to not have any reserves power-wise in those situations. Overtaking at fast uphill sections has to be really thought through ;) The carb in the DR is working great once dialed in correctly. There are very good manuals how and what to do to get it working nice with a crisp throttle response (which it absolutely does not have in stock form) and still low fuel consumption (around 5L/100km in average city/mountain/highway/offroad riding). Longevity is not an issue with the DR either as there are loads of guys in excess of 100k km on the engine without opening it. However there are a few issues from the factory which have to be sorted out first to have a carefree ride. Starting in cold/hot weather or in different altitudes has not been an issue at all either, it just comes down to correctly setting up the carburetor in the first place. Longevity and worry-free life with the DR are THE points for me which make the DR attractive. Lack of aggressiveness (engine power and suspension) are the negative points for me, however those can also turn out as actual positive points when going on longer trips, exactly how you described.

​@@dgugge7 Its all a matter of prepective and personal taste I guess... to me, the XT660 is borderline what I consider acceptable on the highway...so the DR650 (although way way better than an Enduro bike, or even a DRZ400), doesn't make the cut (the XT barely does...) .. so my criticism of the old KTM is coming perhaps from a too demanding standpoint. If you are pleased with the DR650 performance on the road (except for the lack of power) then any version of the KTM will only bring you improvements. Note: When I talk about "road performance", what I'm really worried about are the long highway stretches, which are not as uncommon as I wished. I find "normal roads" quite fun to do in any dual-sport/ADV of any displacement... but highway for more than 1 hour on anything less than the XT is pure torture to me nowadays =/

The DR is quite a capable and proven RTW motorcycle, but as you say, can it be as reliable and friendly as the XTR? DR's do seem to like breaking down on long trips. Air cooled carburation isn't very flexible. I am currently modifying my XTR into what I class as a RTW adventure bike, but there is one thing that can't be fixed easily, and that's its weight. Everything else can be sorted. Weight will only be a problem in bogs IMO. If I'm going bogging, I'll need to make sure I've plenty of strong people about, or I'll need to think of some kind of winch to take with me 😂. Loved the video. Take care.

To be honest, i dont think either of them would let me down on a RTW. The XT is more reliable ("stable" is a better word for what i am trying to say) but the DR can be fixed with a rock and some tin foil xD Its an hard choice.. they exactly the same kind of bike but they offer completely different experiences :o

I'd probably stick with the XT. I think it's more modern. And the XT is just plain fun. I have an XT along with a Tenere 700 and when I want to have a fun ride, action, I take the XT for a ride. This year I will also take the XT on vacation to Bosnia. DR seems to me to be more problematic even from the point of view of spare parts. At least here in the Czech Republic. I wish you many happy kilometers in the saddle of a motorcycle.

Ah, tambem nunca tinhas uma DR? É realmente muito surpreendente... As suspensões parecem altíssimas (enorme potencial para devorar o chão) e o motor é redondo e agradável como o da XT que tão bem conheces! É realmente uma máquina incrivel. I had dr650rse 1993,now i own xt660r 2006.If you can get newer DR take it,there is lot of upgrades for it in usa or australia,but not much in eu.its all true that you said about bikes.overall i would stay with XT its better for me. I've riden and owned both. If more highway biased the XT hands down. More heavy bush work the DR. The Dr is suborn in cold weather to start and must be warmed up a bit and vibrates more. The XT start and ride and is more soother. It's an individual choice, what might suit me may be a wrong choice for someone else.

Hi Diogo. Congrats for you successful channel. About choosing a bike in the middle way Adventure -dual sport I would like your thoughts. I am 187cm, 92kg, and 58 y.old. Currently i ride an Africa Twin 1000L, manual, and I love it. But, as I go deeper in offroadind, i feel like I am not skilled enough and should have a second bike for shorter and more hard terrain. I tried the DRZ 400 but feel cramped. No so confortable standing up. How do you compare the XT600R for this purpose? May be a PR7 could do the job, but i don't want to spend so much on a training mule. The DR650 needs a lot investment in suspension, I believe. The Tenere T7 could be the solution, but for replacing the AT, not as a second. Anyhow it is still heavy and less confortable for longer asphalt roads (to and from trails). Any thoughts about the way to go? Thanks

Hey there Antonio! Right now i am super happy with the XT660R, but i've spend way more than you would ever need on a DR650. If all you want is a training mule, perhaps the DR650 is the way to go (or a KTM690, or a PR7 if you have the money). The DR650 doesnt need much to be very good...you can buy one basically stock and improve it over time as you feel like it. Even on its stock form its 47285x easier to ride than the Africa Twin :) Have you consideres the CRF300? Its a rather weak bike, but surprisingly big. With the right handlebae could perhaps be a good fit for you too :)

XT is very reliable bike which can ride many kilometers without any issue. I would suggest keep it,it is very good for medium off road and not bad for travelling as well.

Next time you snatch a DR650 go and hand it to Hessler Rally Team in Germany. Stefan can take it all apart and rebuild it spanking brand new to last you like a new bike with no concerns. Or just buy a new CRF 450, KTM690 or Husky 701 lol. But I just love these old hogs. And I agree that the sound of a rattling bag full of shells makes me uncomfortable too with these old bikes haha.

The DR can be renewed and modified to be an awesome bike... but I don't think I am ready to get rid of the XT :o I think I will keep tit for a little while longer. Gostava de testar uma XADV, mas só vou conseguindo testar motos que me emprestam, por enquanto, e não conheço ninguém que tenha uma :o O meu conselho geral é que ficavas mais bem servido com a CRF300L se a ideia for fazer fora-de-estrada. A XADV é quer queiramos quer não "uma esquisitísse", que não trás nenhuma vantagem prática e real. Mas lá está, nunca testei nenhuma, não posso dar certezas de nada :o

Pela leitura das tuas respostas parece-me que já sabes a resposta... Tenho uma DR650SE de 2000, apenas fiz abertura da caixa de ar, jetting do carburador e uns Mitas E09 - fiz o lés a lés Offroad 2019 e ela "never missed a beat". Regressar à cidade do Lis sempre por nacional, fez-se, únicas queixas são a falta de protecção aerodinâmica e um ligeiro trepidar mas que se deve aos pneus mais cardados.

ja se passou um mês ou mais e eu ainda não consegui escolher... A XT660 tem-se revelado uma companheira muito capaz, e com a qual faço 200km de estrada na boa, sem sequer pensar que isso possa ser uma chatíce. A DR por outro lado tem um pisar no off-road que deixa a XT a anos-luz, e no fim o que eu gosto mesmo de fazer é offroad...of course :P É uma escolha muito dificil. Mas olha, desejo a todos em 2021 problemas deste tipo para resolver :P

I`d keep the XT660r for sure, its way better build then the Suzuki`s, i had a Suzuki XF650 (which uses the same engine as a DR650) for a bit and everything feels just cheap. the gear box always felt like it`s going to break. Maybe have your bike setup by a fast rider, visit your local dirtbike/enduro/race track and have some of the fast guys there look at you control setup. Look at what the fast guys can do with the really big bikes like Pol Torres with the new Tenere 700 or a Chris Birch with, wel any big KTM bike. Even the "slower" guys like the Mad Mick guy from MVDBR on the Africa Twin, Boano on the T7 or Endurak on the Ktm 990. If these guys can do propper enduro on the big twin cilinder bikes, i`d say youl be fine on the XT660. In the end it`s not the bike, it`s you. If you wanna be better or faster offroad, buy some gas and go practice. It`s the best thing you can buy to improve your riding capability`s. Anyways, stay awesome!!

Hey man, thanks for the long comment! But believe when i tell you that they are completely different bikes when it comes to off road readiness. There is no way in hell the xt is ever going to feel as light as the dr (well, cause it simple isnt). Regarding Christ Birch and Pol Tarres, etc, they are awesome and can do incredible things, but i would argue those bikes wont last forever cause they are stretching them way beyond their intended use. I grind my teeth every time i hear Pol Tarres land that T7...it lands, it doesnt brake in half, but boy does it sound bad... Like a plastic box of cutlery falling off a truck 😅 The XT has been taking me everywhere and I dont feel like it is hard to ride at all..but i miss the freedom of lighter bikes. Well, this video here just says and shows it all about what i feel. Regarding (yet again) big pilots riding bike bikes sucessfully... Just imagine what they would be able to do with a "proper" lightweight off road bike 🤣 Nevertheless yeah... For now i think im keeping the XT... I need to think this through ^^

to say that the xf650 and dr650 are the same due to the "same" engine is a serious mistake. I have both and they are completely different. There's no comparison. The xf is more for cruising and the dr650 is for pure fun. I also had the XT660r. the truth is that it would be difficult to choose between the two. The best thing is to have both! (I bought the xf650 used with only 1800km, never felt like anything broke or let me down.

é uma moto muito complicada para aprender a fazer fora-de-estrada. Mesmo a T7 ou a 660Z são grandes e pesadas para aprender (pelo menos para aprender depressa e sem sofrimento). Sugiro que tentes arranjar por exemplo uma XR250, ou 300, ou tantas outras que vocês têm aí no brasil (cá na europa não temos as "Tornado" nem nada disso!) e aprenderes nela. Se calhar depois até vais gostar de andar na GS1200 e não precisas de trocar ;) Além disso, essas motos mais "fracas" e baratas nunca desvalorizam muito...por isso se comprares uma usada por exemplo por 1500 euros, o mais provavel é conseguires vendê-la passado uns meses ou 1 ano pelo menos preço ;)

I have ridden both bikes; Here are my comments for XT and DR: DR 650 SE: lighter "+" ; rear shock - -> rear bound to soft "-"-> need modification; front fork not adjustable; fuel consumption 6 ltr ( Mikuni TM ) "-" -> more fuel storage needed; -> more weight; You can ride closer to moto cross; spare parts become rare + expensive; at earlier build years -> problems with the starter gears; air/ oil cooled -> at slow motion section -> more heat in the motor; carburater adjustment is more tricky XT 660: heavier "-" -> the only mod. you can do at your bike -> go for 2 in 1 exhaust -> + 60 mm ground clearance (SR racing, but the exhaust will be no more produced), fuel consumption ~5 ltr; I have after 65k km no oil consumption and no other issues -> ride and enjoy; spare parts current cheap; For me one of the best bike I ever had ( XT 600 / 500; R80G/S: R80GS; XRV 750; DR350SE ; DR650SE; DR800) , not to heavy, on and off road ok; Alternatives: KTM 690 / Husqvarna 701 LR -> very high buy cost compared to XTR/ DR; -> some times issue with rocker arm .... oil consumption SWM RS 500R -> more sevice needed -> oil change 2 - 4k km ; ( normal all 1k km); piston replacement Spare parts not so easy SWM 650 r -> only the first build years -> later on become more heavy ; sale in EU stoped; AJP APR 7 -> same engine as SWM; production at your home country -> "+"; but expensive;

Hmmm... I would say its the XT, the frame looks thicker and welded in angles that seem more efficient to withstand cargo, but I'm no expert in that matter. Why do you ask? :)

Ali entre 1995 e 2010 sairam imensas motos "dual-sport" absolutamente fantásticas...DR650, DR350, XR400, DRZ400, XT600, NX650, TTR250, KLX650, NX250 etc etc... todas de mecanica boa, de electrónica muito simples, etc etc. Qualquer uma destas seria boa companheira em africa =) Nao gosto das XLs por serem ja demasiado antigas. Tanto quanto sei são dinossauros a comparar com uma DR ou DRZ, e nao gosto das XRs por serem de Kick. Pessoalmente acho o kick uma coisa horrorsa que "funciona sempre excepto quando não pode mesmo falhar"... mas se calhar sou só um menino sem força na perna :P Pegar uma moto de kick no meio da lama, a meio de uma subida, depois de caires e afogares o carburador, ou quando tens dores nas costas/pernas é um pesadelo... e pode ser fim de uma viagem (é a minha opinião...sei que não é universal)

A good question! =) The Dominator is one of the bikes I recommend to everyone who is looking for a nice dual-sport from the 90s (along with the TT600, DR650, DRZ400, DR350, TTR250, KLR650, etc), but I think the DR650 is "the king" of the old school dual-sports, so that was the one that perhaps maybe, could replace my XT660R (which is way heavier than any of those I mentioned, but its also much more on-road capable)

Hum... DR650... a minha perdição... ainda na semana passada estava uma imaculada no standvirtual. Já não está.... Quando andei na busca por uma, não vi nada em condições e fui para a prima, a Kawa KLR650 (tem também esse LeoVince X3 que é um espetáculo). Conclusões: São de facto motas velhas, não há volta a dar. Uns dias querem pegar, outros dias não. Ouvem-se barulhos. É aprender a ignorar. Modernices como não ter indicação do nível de combustível (esta então... passo a vida a meter gota que a menina depois com pouca gota é sensível) ou mudanças fazem, para mim, falta. Proteção aerodinâmica é para esquecer. Há quem ponha vidros altos mas acho que honestamente não é o propósito da mota. Dúvido que o setup de suspensões que vás ter na DR seja perto do que tens na XT. Eu mantinha a XT e tornava-a ainda melhor.

Para ser sincero, estou a achar as suspensões da DR magníficas, no sentido em que já acalquei á bruta uma série de obstáculos e a moto manteve-se na linha sem afundar ou queixar-se. A minha XT na frente está boa... mas boa para moto pesada. É uma vaca que se mexe bem... atrás é que tá fraquinha. Mas custa-me estar a por 700eur de amortecedor (que depois um dia que queira vender a moto pouco ou nada a valorizam) sem sequer ter a garantia de que a moto vai ficar muito melhor. A DR trouxe-me algo que não sentia ha anos...que é a imunidade ao erro. Fazes um erro, ela torce-se e volta ao sitio... falhas uma linha, aceleras mais com confiança e ela safa-se...vês uma coisa que não tens a certeza se consegues fazer ou não e tentas fazer na mesma, porque nada de muito mal pode acontecer... Duvido muito que consiga ter essa felicidade na XT :( Mas depois a XT é melhor em tudo o resto :D...e tão fiável e económica...

Yeah, I would probably go for the 690/701. ~165Kg is a weight that suits me. Besides, the CRF450L (which I haven't tried) seems a bit too endurish in concept/mechanics to be a long term / daily use adv bike. Maybe I am wrong..

Engines have no comparison with the XT having fuel injection & water cooling & the DR has neither and it’s Cam runs directly on the cylinder head where the XT’s runs properly on Roller Bearings .. so good luck with the Suzuki’s longevity if you go that way.

There isnt such thing as a new DR elsewhere but Australia :( I've been looking at the new 690s and 701s though... But to be honest, I don't think I'm ready for any of these deals anyway... In the end, I am a practical low-budget guy, and I don't see buying new vehicles like a smart investment. Maybe when I reach 50k subscribers or something I'll buy a brand new cold fusion hover-bike :P
