Yamaha hands down, without sweat. I tried a YTS 875EX just to see and it's my number 1 horn for years now. I then got an unlacquered YTS Z which plays so good. The Z is for the loud gigs and the EX is for everything else. Z projects like a VI, EX like a SBA. I Love my two Yamaha Tenors and my search is over with these two horns. I once had a Yani alto that I loved as well.

Both horns are fantastic. Bottom line, practice everyday and the rest will take care of itself. Everyone is looking for the "magic horn" to make them sound like a good player. Micheal Jordan was who he was no matter what shoes he wore. Practice like a savage and you will get the gig.

@ketong71 11 ай бұрын
@@federicom100 Well, to be honest, I can't really describe it. It resonated to me better. It just felt more alive. The regular YAS-62III was ok. I didn't find it quite moving. It was like when I play-tested the Yanagisawa AWO10. Both of those felt the same way to me. Good sound, but they didn't wow me. They weren't stuffy, but they sounded subdued. But when I played the YAS-62IIIS, I fell in love with it right away. Plus, I got it on sale. It was a win-win for me. The horns I felt that would win me over the YAS-62S were way over my budget. They were a YAS-82ZII, a Selmer Mark 6 and a Selmer Supreme. I hope this helps!

@@federicom100 Also, if you want a darker sound, you may want to look at the YAS-82ZII. If you like Yanagisawas, then try the AWO2 or the AWO20. The bronze alloy might be up your alley. Plus, they are more affordable in Japan than they are in the US.

There are some great sax's around, but I could never find something that I liked more than my Yanagisawa (Alto and Tenor) 880. Way back in high school (1980's) my music teacher had a Mark VI, it sounded ok, but I could not just adjust to the finger position layout of the sax. Some of the Yamaha's are good, but not enough to make me want to swap. But that is just my opinion. I wonder if the music store where you are trying the sax's have a Yanagisawa 9930? Might be worth a look. I think there is a modern equivalent now.

Great comparison! Thanks so much for doing it. Was the YTS-62S you tested before also from the third generation? I did that comparison with altos: YAS-62S, YAS-62 and a YAS-62III. The YAS-62III was noticeable different while the differences between the YAS-62 and the YAS-62S were subtle. So, If the YTS-62S you tested (and you liked) is not from the third generation you should look for an older YTS-62 and you'll find the differences are subtle.

What is it that your prefer about the Yamaha and Yani over the Cannonball? I own a Yamaha YAS-23, and have a Cannonball Global Series tenor. I’ve played a Selmer Ref 54 and Yamaha 62 and Custom Z. The top in was better on them all than the Cannonball, but towards the bottom of the horn, I felt my Cannonball had them beat. Maybe it being because I was more use to it, but I didn’t feel the others were that much better regarding the price. I say all this as a non- professional player, which is why I was asking you as a pro level saxophonist.

Good question. I feel like Cannonball has stopped developing their "brand defining" sound and is focusing on too much on cosmetic attributes. They are fantastic at it but my taste are pushing me in a different direction. I'm also not bound by the limits of the cruise ship gigs and I can focus on my original music with my vision of sound.

Selmer. I own the reference 36. It was spending. In retrospect, I would have gone with the Yani or the Yamaha as the best sounding most cost effective Tenor. If I were looking for resale value, Selmer seems to be a collector item. But, if you are a working pro or teacher you gotta invest in money makers, not collectables.

Hi! I agree with your conclusions, and yes - something with the EQ is not right, both sound very bright through these "zoom" microphones... I own both YAS-62 II silver and B-WO10, and although one is alto and the other is bari, I can imagine what you mean by "feeling cheap", I think the springs are slightly tighter on my Yanagisawa... To me, when I was looking at altos, and in some sense this carries along the entire lineup, Yangisawa's temperament seemed darker and more "classical" perhaps, while Yamaha sounds very "direct" (did you have the same impression?). I think this flatters the bari a lot (darker and more withheld). Yanagisawa's ebonite mouthpiece #5 is quite nice too, much more usable than the 4C ;-) I think both these tenors are great, and both are priced sensibly for what you're getting - you'll enjoy either one! Cheers from Israel!

I find Yamahas have generally a brighter tone, especially the 82z and 62. I like the 875Ex Gold Plated alto tone a lot but it is quite expensive. As you said Yanagisawa's are very freeblowing. What in the world did you mean when you said that Yamaha 62 felt “cheap”? The Yanni’s are incredibly well built, but they have no sound! Over-priced for what it is. Of all of the professional saxophonists playing Japanese saxophones, the ratio of Yamaha to Yanigisawa is what… 1000 to 1 1000 to 1? Yanigisawa saxophones are overpriced !

The tension in the springs of the Yamaha felt inconsistent from one note to the next which made it feel cheap compared to the Yany. Many people feel that the Yany's "have no sound" because of their free-blowing nature. The best way to try the Yany saxes are to bring a stiffer reed and maybe a more open tip mouthpiece. Because they are so easy to respond, people have a tendency to not push enough air through them to really get them to sing. In my opinion

Strange, I hear it total opposite... Yani bright and thin, no core. Yamaha darker and with a good dark core.
