Yamaha YZ250 Fork Seals Fixed Step By Step in Close Up Detail

Yamaha YZ 250 Inverted forks disassembled and rebuilt in ultra close up detail. Showing how most people with average mechanical skills could successfully replace seals and fluids in many of todays common inverted motorcycle forks .
The fork seal kit used in this video is from Pivot Works # PWFFK-Y05-400
The fork cap wrench is a 49mm/12.5 Dual Chamber wrench from Motion Pro #08-0429
The fork seal driver is a 48mm Ringer Motion Pro fork seal driver #08-0493
The valve removal tool is 19mm drive 36mm octagon fork compression valve removal tool from Motion Pro #080373
While its always an option to make your own tools sometimes the time and effort does not offset the cost of buying the exact tool for the job . Huge respect to those who have the time ,skills and resources to make tools effortlessly .There are many talented people out there that make it look easy. We could all learn from them .
Amendment note : A recomendation from a comment left by a fellow rider mentioned it would be wise to inspect the sliders closely for any scrapes or deformation before assembly . He rides in a sandy gritty area in the southwest desert and this can be a huge consideration to look out for as trapped sand on sliders can cause heaps of trouble . Great tip ,thanks Peter ,Cheers

Best video I’d come across! Short and to the point. I simply did the steps you did, paused and plated as I went along. First time ever doing fork seals and it was a breeze. Just messy. For anyone going to tackle it, get the proper tools. ANNNNND MOST IMPORTANTLY: loosen the 48mm nut with the fork tubes still tightened in the triple tree. You can loosen the triple tree, lower the fork tube and get it, or simply remove the bars. At least that’s how mine was.

You installed the washer with the projections down, which is wrong based on what I'm reading. Those need to be up to keep the bushing from walking. You're the only one I know of installing it like this

Well thanks very much .That was a fun video to make .The stunt double dummy intro was a shout out to the late great Super Dave Osborne .Also, my grandson Kane just loved when I used that dummy in other videos on my original channel when I was just TRy'an to Learn how to shoot,edit and upload to KZbin. The videos are all over map and absolutely terrible and quite embarrassing. But ya gotta start somewhere ,right. The Zee/Zed thing is odd for sure .I typically use both. Born in Britain I was taught Zed but living in Canada picked up Zee .Its funny because I usually say R"Zed" 350 for the little Yamaha and DR"Zee" for the 400 Suzuki. So I have no solid answer, me and most of my friends will use both .I must thank you again for watching my channel and your continued support. Its giving me a better understanding im just struggling abit atm because my 2001 yz250 forks are leaking im worried about pulling my forks apart as i know nothing about them and im just worried about doing damage. Also do i do the exact same for both forks and how do i know what type of forks i have in case they have been changed though out the years also should it be the same amount of oil for all yz250, Thank u for any advice man!

Hi Mushastash ,thanks very much for the kind words. Regarding the amount of oil required in each fork ,they should be the same . Know that there is a range so typically the recommended amount can vary by 100 cc because the air gap is part of the tuning adjustment. But do the same amount for each fork. A proper service manual will give you the recommended volume to use likely between 200and 300 ml .in the main body ,I use 245ml . The upper base valve volume is exact ,mine is 195ml .Regarding fork similarity they will likely be identical inside , although its not always the case. But any variance will be minor ,nothing to worry about .Regarding your fork types there are identifying things to give you clues . Letters and numbers in the casting, the fork cap style and the shape of the upper fork tube where the seals reside .You can find great pictures and info to figure out yours if you visit "Thumper Talk" ask any question in the search and follow the threads you will have great success there I'm sure. 5:15 how necessary is it to replace these seals in your experience? I purchased a KYB rebuild kit but it only comes with oil and dust seals and bushings I believe. Forks were leaking quite badly (new to me bike) and now I'm wondering whether I should get these seals as well. Thanks for the video

Hey Benny. That's a good question. In my estimation unless your some kind of pro rider that's flying over triples or hammering though whoops like a maniac I think you're absolutely fine without replacing those seals unless they are obviously damaged. For us mere mortals just replace the bushings, seals and dust caps and you should be good to go . Cheers buddy 🍻

I did this an im pretty sure i did it right, but at 7:00 you say to make sure the gap is within spec mine, was when i just did it finger tight, and then you tighten that bolt elminating the gap? Am i doing something wrong im kinda stressing a bit as i feel like ive messed up. Is that just some sort of check?

Hi Jacob , Not to worry .You did it right .Yes you are meant to tighten and eliminate that gap after checking . That gap is a check to see there is enough adjustment available on the clicker when you want to fine tune your suspension settings .If you remember how many clicks it was set at before you took everything apart and you were happy with how your bike felt ,then go with that number .If you didnt happen to remember how many clicks it was at ,start somewhere in the middle and see how it goes when you go for a ride . Its fun to play around with your suspension settings to see how much of a difference it makes. I hope this helps .Ride safe and have fun . Cheers buddy

@@fredc8618 Hi Fred , Thats a good question ,I couldn't tell you with certainty but its quite possible as that was a bridge year between the 05 and 04 when they went to an aluminum frame so I wouldn't be surprised if there was a slight difference is some of the fork details .I will ask some of the pros at the shop next week and see if they can offer some insight .

@@fredc8618 Hi Fred I just took a quick look at the micro fiche parts list and diagrams for both the 04 and 05 YZ250S .It shows a different top cap between the two years and some different internals as well so it looks like a different tool would be required for dissassembly as you had suggested . Hi Jason ,I thought the same as you and had to double check the instructions in the factory manual YZ250(T)/T1 section 5 page 38 point 28 under special note where it states..Hold locknut and tighten adjuster with specified torque .I'm not sure of the technical reasons why but they made a point of highlighting that particular sequence otherwise I would have done what you and I both thought , draw it up and lock the adjuster .Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. @@TRyanLearnBikes I disagree and here is why....By tightening the adjuster finger tight it creates a starting point for your adjuster (clickers) that is not dependent on things like the exact length of the adjuster tube and other variables. If you further tighten the adjuster the the adjuster tube would be moving the valve in the piston so that when the clicker is all the way out, the valve in the piston is not fully open. Also, I have both a 2020 YZ250F and 2021 KX250F that both use the same forks. The Yamaha manual describes just as you stated, but the Kawasaki manual states to turn the adjuster on finger tight, then back the nut up to the adjuster, then it says to hold the nut and tighten the adjuster. But at that point you are not really moving anything, just torqueing it. Great video, but I think the Yamaha manual is leading people astray.
