I have found where the problem comes from. It is the intake valve clearance which is too important. This is due to a manufacturing defect in the intake valves marked 5yv (there is a new part number marked 2D1). There is the problem also on the FZ1 because it is the same engine. The metal of the sub-valves is not hard enough and their height decreases, which is why there is excessive clearance. Not all intake valves are defective. Here is the forum where I found the answer: www.r1-forum.com/threads/ticking-noise.185207/page-2 (AhhWan)

Did you ever solve this issue? My 2004 r1 has the same noise and is at the shop right now getting the valve clearances looked at. Thanks

@@evanwalsh8808 I solved the problem by changing the intake valves (I also took the opportunity to change the exhaust valves). It's a long job, but now I don't have any noise.

@@artimusgordon6141 Okay thank you for the reply, However, did you replace the valves just for piece of mind? I did see your comment about them updating the part number. Ultimately, the shop called me today and said two of my intake valves were out of spec pretty bad but they had no problems adjusting them and the bike should be good to go now with the noise gone. I understand this could be a reoccurring issue but the bike only has 20k miles, do you think Ill be okay not updating the current valves to the new part number for the time being? Thanks

My r1 2005 had a pretty loud tick got the valve adjustment and it’s gone now. Just cylinder 1 was way out of wack for some reason. About 20,000 miles on it. So if I just go them adjusted will the tick come right back if I didn’t replace the part like your saying?

@@evanwalsh8808 I just got my 05 done and 1 or 2 valves were out of spec and the noise is gone. I hope I wasn’t supposed to also get them replaced! I don’t notice the noise like it was. But my question is will it come back soon

My 06 R1 is making a very similar noise, not the ticking but the general "whirring" noise that you hear the engine making in this video. Your video seems to be the only 5vy engine noise video on youtube that i can find with the same sounding engine as mine. Is that whirring normal? I feel like i might be experiencing timing chain guide failure but the video on that noise sounds a lot worse than what i hear.
@artimusgordon6141 Жыл бұрын
This "whirring" or "hiss" is the noise of the gearbox bearings. I think this noise is a normal operating noise. I bought this bike new and it has always had this noise. Since my mechanical intervention to change the valves, there is always this hissing of the bearings. As I also changed the alternator rotor, I also changed the 2 bearings but there is still this operating noise.

If my 2008 r1 has this tick does it mean its in danger of any major engine failure? I'm trying to sell it i just changed fluids and I dont wanna spend money on shit like this
@artimusgordon61413 жыл бұрын
It seems that this problem only affects 2004 thru 2006 models. Yes, I think it could break the engine: the valves could get stuck in the guides.

@@jimmypeso8609 apparently it’s the Timing chain tensioner according to the mechanic I brought it to. Waiting for the stock part to arrive. Cost $200+ CAD he said it’s a faulty part and should’ve been a recall that was never done for earlier models of the R1. The new part is now better and should last 120,000+ miles they say.

What damage did you find on your friend motorcycle?
@artimusgordon61414 жыл бұрын
The intake valves must be changed because they lose length. It is necessary to use the new reference 2D1 It seems that in some cases the diameter of the valve stems increase and wear the valve guides. It breaks the engine.

I just bought an 06 showing 42k but guy the I got it from geared it lower so he claims it's about 5k less. Also speedo was reading 60 when the driver next to me was going 50(not sure how accurate that is) Anyhow, I'm hearing a slight tick but from the experience of my 2015 fz 07 they sounded similar. The motor sounds a little off to me but I have no clue. Engine has no hesitation when riding I just think it sounds a bit off(ticking) at idle. Thoughts. I would love to pick your brain since we have the same bike.

The problem occurs around 20000 km. If in doubt, a valve clearance check will tell you if there is a problem.
