Technically they never fought. I wish it was against him actually instead of his subordinates. This arc isn’t my favorite. I dislike when enemies can’t win because of their talents. They’re just stealing their Bankai so they’re weak enough to lose to them. If they couldn’t steal their Bankai the quinces would’ve been eliminated in under an hour. Byakuya wins easily and so does Yamato and the other captains. Quincies aren’t that strong. They had to steal their opponents power to win.

Yamamoto's world crumbled so quickly. In a few days his lieutenant and friend dies, then he thinks he finally beat Yhwach, thinks he had the upperhand because he thought they needed to have complete information on someones bankai to steal it, is completely incorrect, squad 1 barracks explode and seemingly another friend of his dies, didn't actually beat Yhwach, gets bankai stolen instantly, gets cut down. Just a monument of L's for Yamamoto.

If you think about it, both during the battle with Aizen and here with Yhwach, Yamamoto was a step behind every step of the way. Aizen outwitted him during FKT and had contingencies for him to neutralize his flames. And he was totally played for a fool by Yhwach. Emotionally manipulated and fooled into exhausting himself fighting Royd Lloyd posing as Yhwach, then having his bankai stolen and ultimately getting cut down like trash. Yamamoto was the most powerful Shinigami born for over a millenia, but his hubris was ultimately his downfall.

This episode was not as faithful as the 2 before, but I think that actually makes it better. Because they had a running story and theme throughout the episode that started and concluded within the 20 mins. The intercuts between present and past Yhwach and Yamamoto were SO GREAT. And the fact that we see more of Uryu's inner conflict was awesome. And the extended Aizen scene, holy shit. @@Mstrskeletor89 Haha, funny saying that I am an Aizen stan when I have Nel pfp! Nah but for real Shinji's my favourite, but I heard from Tommo that he ain't getting much screen time in this arc so that makes me kinda sad. (Tbf I love Kubo's artstyle and design that it's hard to pick my favourites). I neither liked nor disliked Aizen, he was Okay for me, but with the time pass, I seem to enjoy him as a villain, and I just love the vibe he gave out to Ychwach that: (He's still the main Bleach villain, don't get in my way). When I rewatched the final battle between Ichigo and Aizen, it really came off as interesting when Ichigo told Urahara, that Aizen just wanted to be the strongest, and have an opponent that would match his power. ''It must be sad to be this strong and feel so lonely in this world''. Something like that was said by Ichigo after the fight, and that kinda spoke to me. Aizen malicious evildoer felt more human-like, that his motives had a reasoning, he sought someone who would be an equal in power, so he wouldn't be lonely in this world. I think that is a fascinating motive, since when you think about it, it must feel horrible when you're the best and there's nothing to improve on, you're just sitting at the top alone, looking deep into your dark hollow soul. You can kinda feel compassionate about the character ykno. And I think that nailed it for me, he is really a cool and intriguing character, and one of the best villains.

My headcanon is that Yama always scolds Kenpachi since he’s so chaotic and does his own thing, so Yama grabbing Kenny from Yhwach was a nice touch. Yama even put him on the ground quite gently. Then there’s yhwach who just incinerates the man who got cut in half for him. Lol

I think it was rushed; Yama ji injures "Ywhach" in shikai but not in bankai until north which should have totally incinerated "Ywhach" instead of that partial cut. Plus the 15 million degrees bit is so excessive it's dumb... In the end to me it felt like more flash than actual fire.

Plus Yamamoto clearly wanted to make him suffer and not outright kill him immediately, these one of many personality changes over the last 1,000 years is why Yhwach never considered him one of the 5 special threats.

I'm so glad for these extra scenes, for they really give context to Yhwach's motivations and the Quincies' feud with Soul Society. For the longest time, I was super confused at the 800 year discrepancy between the original War and the Quincy extermination, since I thought they were the same thing. But no, Uryu's scene proves that it was a two-step operation, as the Quincies didn't learn their lesson after their first, crushing, defeat and ignored all attempts at dialogue. So Soul Society decided to nip the problem in the bud, not knowing that Yhwach was rebuilding right under their noses.

Best episode ever. I love the expanded context and atmosphere. I think the jump cut of the sternritter seemingly being burnt is intentionally jarring because they’ll flash back to it later to show the swap. I do wish there was SOME forshadowing with the swap. Just showing that Royd was clearly alive would be enough. The swap happens when the sternritter attack and showing that Royd is alive before they jump yama would’ve made it clear in hindsight without being too revealing, I think. Apart from that. HOLY SHIT. Amazing. I probably won’t care once they do the flashback to clear it up but adding some foreshadowing would definitely make it seem more fluid.

I love that the anime is cutting down some fat. The manga arc was 206 chapters. If each of these episodes adapts 4-5 chapters, then the original source material will be covered on 42-47 episodes. That leaves about 5-10 full episodes worth of new scenes( backstories, bankais, extended fights)that can be included to reach the 52 episodes that we were promised. The narrative is a little rushed at times, but I would rather them rush the first invasion in order to give everything more time later. The best fights are still yet to come.

Something that's not being drawn enough attention to is that each cardinal position has a very unique visual style to it, just compare the surreal and uncanny CGI of South to the broad and vivid strokes of North, those don't feel like they are from the same anime as they are so different yet they are less than a minute apart. This is actually amazing and is probably my favorite thing about this episode. I was wondering after this episode: what if, by saying that Yhwach mercilessly killed his subordinates, Yamamoto meant exactly that? What if the fact that Yhwach literally used transfer of his power, making his subordinates his emergency rations during battle with Yamamoto, is the reason these skeletal remnants are trying to attack him? And I wonder if seeing Yhwach using his own subordinates so sparringly, was the reason Yamamoto decided to reconsider his mentality and began getting softer as a person?

This episode made it clear that practically no one could fight Yama straight up. He wasn't lying when he said that "he is all the protection needed". All villains needed to prepare to deal with him - Azien with wonderweiss and Yhwach literally for hundreds of years tried and found a way to take the shinigami's Trump card and greatest power (bankai). He clearly learnt from the last encounter, so he wasn't stepping to the old man without getting rid of the most destructive and powerful bankai. Anyhow, war is also about strategy as much it is about fire power. Hats off to the Quincy for their preparations and strategic moves. While possessing the most destructive and OP power Yama, you just weren't the main character and would have ended the series too early but justice was indeed done to your bankai. RIP
