Among other things, Patanjali's Yoga Sutras are famous for the yamas and nimayas, which are the very basis of the entire path of yoga. In this short video, Giridhari Das explains the 5 yamas.

Hi The 3T path, I was searching for further and deeper explanations of the Yamas and I found you. I believe that its a pity that you focus your comments in such a narrow point of view...since the first one Ahimsa you said something that really socked me but I keep watching the video until the end to hear all you have to said, as I didnt wanted to judge you from the first sentences... There are soooo many points I would love to discuss with you about your speech, specially when you said if you eat meat you will have cancer!! My friend cancer is a new sickness, what do you think about our ancestors and indigenas that had been haunting animals and eating meat since thousands years ago...Dont missunderstand me because Im vegetarian and I believe in Ahimsa non violence (as all the Yamas) starting first with the practice towards yourself, then other livings beings (including the planet). I Never write any comment on KZbin but maybe you can offer and explain better than you did here, maybe you could bring more light into the world and presenting the Yamas in a more complete and profound way. Of course this is my point of view and you will have your own...I wish you can reflex on this words and take it as an opportunity of growing and challenge your believes, sometimes is good to do it ;) (Hoping I don't fall breaking the 4 key that Pantajali gave us at the yoga sutras and finding my self envolved in a story like the parrot and the monkey, sure you know what Im talking about) Wishing you a nice day and happy life. Namaste.

There is much to be said for ahimsa, but I happen to think that becoming vegan/vegetarian is one of the most impactful and important applications of the concept. The leading cause of avoidable death in the world today is dietary choices. And the leading cause of ecological destruction is the meat industry. But thanks for your comments and I would gladly like to hear from you more. 🙏😊❤

@@3tpath veganism is one of the worst choices any person could make for their health. You have no business skewing the sutras to push your bs agenda. Not everyone is the same, some doshas run better off on vegetarianism that others so don't make blanket statements for everyone. Now I'm going to eat the homemade pasta with grass fed beef and wild elk that I just prepared before I turned on this biased video.

Ref. to this comment: "Ahimsa does not mean that you never use violence. What non-violence means is that you never use violence against an innocent creature". I find this quite tricky, the danger is that if our brain assigns blame and quilt to another being, then violence becomes allowed. It is a rationalization, typical of any human, in who's trap is easy to fall. Hence, I find Yoga Sutra 1.33 ("cultivate equinomity towards those who don't share your values/are non-virtuous" as a more suitable glass.

Also, looking ad-literam at what is happening on the battlefield in the Gita is a bit of a western viewpoint. For Hindu/Jain people, the Gita stories (and the ones in the rest of the Vedic texts) are to be looked at through the moral of the story, not by singular elements. That's why the Upanishads, for example, require a teacher to reveal the meanings.

Yes, it's tricky! We must try our best to be in dharma, to be kind and compassionate. I find that those who think like that tend to be wonderful people. We can do our best, and that's all Krishna can ask of anyone.

So war is good but eating steak is bad? I don't think that's what Patanjali was getting at.
@3tpath
@3tpath 3 жыл бұрын
War is awful, but it can be necessary to protect innocent people from evil, such WWII, and the Battle of Kurukshetra. On the other hand, killing animals just for fun, and further damaging your body and destroying the planet, is always heinous.

No anger or resentment, or judging. I ate meat for decades. But know that there's a worldwide scientific consensus that meat increases the risk of cancer - here's a starting point for your research - www.wcrf.org/dietandcancer/exposures/meat-fish-dairy from the World Cancer Research Fund 🙏❤😊

Dude. Don't project your opinions of vegetarianism onto the sutras. That's an interpretation that you're presenting as fact. Also 18 comments on 12000 views? Suspicious.

It's not an opinion. Yogis have always been vegetarian.

@@3tpath inaccurate. From page 16 of Asana Pranayama Mudra Bandha by Swami Satyananda Saraswati: "Contrary to popular belief, yoga does not say that a vegetarian diet is essential, although in higher stages of practice it is recommended" The yoga sutras of patanjali, which is the text that you are referencing, book 2, sutra 35: "In the presence of one firmly established in non-violence, all hostilities cease". Then it moves on to Satya and nothing more is said. Many, probably most, yogis do interpret ahimsa as vegetarianism. This is completely valid but is not the same as what you are saying. I'm not saying these things as an attack on you, friend, just as a reminder to check your biases and do your best to speak the truth about what is actually contained in the sutras. If vegetarianism makes sense to you then follow that but don't use yoga as vehicle to push your views on others.
@3tpath
@3tpath 3 жыл бұрын
Swami Satyananda can express his views, as can I. You'd have to have a very strange interpretation of ahimsa not to include a vegetarian diet. I'm sorry this seems to upset you, but it's an obvious conclusion.

@@3tpath and you don't see that a complete dismissal of other people's perspectives on what non-violence means could be considered an act of violence? I don't take issue with your views per se. I consider it dangerous that you're teaching them as undisputable facts as if you're some kind of higher moral authority. This isn't religious dogma. It is yoga. Your position as a teacher is to guide such that the student can make further discoveries about their own self. It is not to tell people what to think.
