Tbh that still wouldn't clarify much, as mentioned in the video a ZX4RR (which is a rare exception for a new bike) is competing with the likes of the R7 and GSX8R, you've got the Triumph Street Triple 765 competing with the likes of the Duke 890 and MT09, Aprilia RS660 vs Ducati Supersport 950. There's too many manufacturers making too many different bikes to make a clear classification based simply on displacement. And that's only the modern market, if you add bikes that are out of production you have an endless amount of variety and bikes that don't fit in a displacement based classification like the 2 strokes which even in a 249cc package can push out the same power as the 689cc Yamaha twin and the 399cc Kawasaki I4, now you've got bikes from 3 different classes pushing the same power. It's just impossible

I think typically race categories are determined partly by cc but taking HP into account. Ie. SV650 is considered lightweight, R6 is middleweight (because a 600 SS has considerably more power than the 650) Don't be confused, R3 & Ninja 400 is featherweight. 1000s get towards heavy weight, and stuff like Ducati V2 & V4 are unlimited. I just dont think we should consider street bikes as certain categories just based on cc. (I mean shit, the KLR650 has like 30hp at best, vs 80+ from the SV. Both are 650cc). I think the manufacturers arent actually calling their 750+ middleweight, but they wouldnt sell anything if they called it heavyweight. It's just for sales.

Taking about 250 or 500cc as a begginer bike means that u use A2 license and not A and you wouldnt see these small bikes when training or getting a license. Why would you pay twice to get a motorcycle license first getting A2 and then A. The only reason is age as A2 can be made as an 18 year old while A only when 24 years or older (when you have A2 and want to upgrade you can do it earlier). I mostly rode MT-07 and got my license on one and my first bike was a Kawasaki ZR7 whch is going to be swapped shortly for a Street Triple 675 or FZ06 most likely.

most new riders with absolutely zero experience will make all kinds of dumbass newb mistakes, I know I did, and it’s much better to be wonky and unsure on a smaller bike than on some 600cc+ rocket. a sub-300cc will be a lot more forgiving than something you can whiskey throttle into a tree in half a second flat. also, and this is even more important, while you’re learning the controls and building the muscle memory on just how to ride a bike, how to behave in traffic, what to pay attention to, all that, you don’t want to divide your attention further by also having to struggle with the bike actively trying to kill you. it’s like learning the basics of horseback riding on some sassy race horse that can throw you off any second vs a tame and slow horse especially for newbs. it’s a no-brainer. most people will have a bad time if they don’t start slow.
@Jagshemasher10 ай бұрын
I think its so difficult these days because there are really three factors involved 1) The weight of the bike, 2) The engine power characteristics and 3) The engine power output. Seeing as we no longer have peaky two-stroke bikes readily available for road use (which threw everything through a loop), then based on weight, the classifications IMO would be 0 - 375 lbs light, 375 - 550 lbs, middle, 550-700 lbs heavy, 700+ lbs lard-ass. Based on what rpm peak power is developed < 6500 rpm friendly, 6500 - 10,000 rpm frisky, 10,000+ rpm savage. Based on power 0 - 25 HP tame, 25 - 50 HP manageable, 50 - 110 HP entertaining, 110 - 160 HP frightening, 160 HP+ terrifying. For the sake of survival beginners should generally stay away from any bike where weight exceeds middle, and engine peak power rpm exceeds frisky and engine power exceeds the middle of the entertaining range. Once they have survived the first year or two they will learn what type of bike suits them. I have two bikes 1. Ninja 400 - Light, Frisky, Manageable and 2. FJR1300 - Heavy, Frisky, Frightening. All the foregoing is based on road bikes for "normal" riders - not people who have been riding YZ250's since they were 6 years old!

Times change, I guess. A 250cc parallel twin does not cost less to manufacture than a 500cc parallel twin, but people are willing to pay more for the 500cc twin because we've been trained to pay for power and performance. Since the manufacturers have spent a fortune training consumers to pay for performance, there aren't a lot of options to deal with rising costs. If the cost of manufacturing and materials rise, you've got to sell performance, and then sell tech to keep people safe by limiting the performance.

Great video. Very informative. Thinking of getting into bikes but feel I am too old for a beginner lol.

Everything wants to be a middleweight since the label sells well. Like when car manufs tried to call 4-door cars coupes at one point.

There are no categories anymore, you can literally choose any hp/ccm combination. Why are we still complaining about abundance? Oh yes, for yt content.

Personally I feel bikes like the Z900 & MT09 don't fall into the middleweight category, these bikes are no joke.

Hard to decide on what I swap my 07 CBF600 for. Keep the same 'retro' styling with a modern update in the SV650 (with a more lively V-twin powerplant)? Or get a few more creature comforts with the GSX-8S? But since both of those have similar power to my current bike... what if I get a small jump up the pecking order and go for a Street Triple 765 - so more bang in a similar ergonomic package? Decisions, decisions... Or maybe I consider the new middleweight "adventure" and touring options, if I want something that can pull double-duty as a tourer (I mainly commute).

Here in Mexico all main brands still have starters from 250cc And Chinese bikes that are cheaper have even smaller displacements I think 100 are the smallest you can legally drive around main roads. If you order domino’s in Mexico I guarantee the guy will arrive in a white Honda cargo 125/150

Well, my first middleweight was an '01 Ducati 750 Sport ^^ It was quite tame and reliable compared to my '96 Aprilia 125 RS :P

Zx4rr bit was funny. I actually really like that bike conceptually because it allows this pseudo super sport class to still exist, be committed and fun, and still meet emissions standards. I was really hoping it would stimulate some similar bikes from other manufacturers but so far nothing. I would give just about anything for Honda to bring back the nc30. Or Yamaha to at least do something cool.

There should be a distinction between bikes like thr GZ250 (250cc, 20hp), and the Ninja 400 (45hp). The jump between those two bikes is massive, I can immediately tell the immense difference between my barely highway capable bike and my friend's faster than most cars, wheelie capable bike.

A 45 hp motorcycle is not faster than most cars . I learned riding on a 48 hp bike and it was completely tame . Bikes get dangerous in terms of power when they are powerful enough to lose rear traction under normal conditions or powerwheelie .

AAAAh Riding brothers and sisters, you have no idea how lucky you are that you can legally ride anything more than 250cc in your countries. Let alone that it is legal for girls to get a riding license there. Count your blessings. With love, your Iranian brother who is stuck with a 230cc Chinese bike.

I recently went around looking for whatever they had last year's models on sale for, asked for an sv650. Was told we're phasing them out but here's an 800. He says it had a very linear throttle feel or some excuse to make it more approachable. All I thought is I'm just a more linear idiot. And don't need that much bike to get to work. I live around a sub base, a casino and a college traffic is as terrible as the roads are.
