at 73 and with 50 years on 2 wheels i just bought a used sv650, it was a cream puff, 12k mi. all original, garage kept on a batt. tender. the owner even had a complete set of soft luggage he thru into the deal, he offered to follow me home rather than install all the voodoo straps. i love this bike....no it's not a vfr, which is what i have ridden since the late 80's when i got a slightly used '86 750. being a gen 2 bike the throttle is way more sensitive than i like and the compression braking way stronger than i'm used too. it takes some getting used too. i have the on throttle figured out but i find myself slowing down to much setting up for curves. after 2 weeks of ridding i still love it and i'm glad i bought it. thanks for your input, i watched at least one of your reviews before my purchase and i used it to prevent myself from buying a k 750 i had promised to buy when i turned 60......still not ready for a pokey old guy bike. :)

Yamm, after watching your vids for a while I bought a 2017 SV650A. Could not be happier. put a Yoshimura Alpha carbon slip-on on it, and it sounds like a Ducati v-twin. If anyone is on the fence about buying an SV over a MT07, or the other 650's in the class. they are are good bikes , but the SV650 has an awesome factory suspension, sounds great with an aftermarket pipe, is bulletproof reliable, easy to service, and I think it looks sexy as well.

@@Spartansrule118 No, it was very reliable for the time that I owned it. I owned it way back in 2013 when I was young and dumb and bought too expensive of a motorcycle for my small entry level salary. I ended up leaving that job because management was terrible and had to sell the 696 because it was financed. I buy all my bikes in cash now, so my Concours 1400 and Z125 are paid off. The 696 was a super special bike with tons of Italian character… but my 1400 is a much better bike in almost every way other than weight.

I ride a 797 Monster and believe you would find it to be a similarly analog and rewarding bike. After having a Triumph Speed Twin, I really appreciate the cable throttle linkage. I wish the manufacturers would realize that the throttle is our primary control touchpoint, and needs to be a visceral connection to the bike.

Owned a 17 SV650 for 3 years, has more power and sounds better than the duc. Handles exceptionally well especially with the right tyres. Stopped in at ducati dealer and convinced myself to maybe upgrade to a m659 or m797. Had a test ride on the m797... Throttle was mild compared to my sv650. It turned the same. However I like the ducs more modern suspension and those brembos are way better than my 2 pot nisfins. However the new sv650 had front brake upgrade. All up I decided my SV650 is better so I kept it. Ducati 821 would be the obvious upgrade over the sv650 not the m659/m797.

I was hesitant between an SV650 like this one or an M796. I've had my license for 10 years, spent 7 on an M600 and 2 on an 02 SV650. I went for a 2017 SV and I gotta say I change my mind pretty much everyday lol. Some days I'm happy I went for the reliable economical and still very fun and good looking SV, others I just wish I had that Ducati character, handling and look again. I might go for a clean example M796 as my next bike but I'm still afraid of the reliability since I've had my fair share of problems with the 600 even though the 796 has a pretty good reputation. I do around 5-6000 miles a year and use my bike to commute quite often. If anyone has owned a 796 for some time I'd love a feedback!

While I don't regret my 500R and love it to pieces, if I were to do things over again today, I'd definitely start on the SV650 (or 650R). However I didn't at the time as I was unsure if I could handle the 650, that and I was looking for the lower insurance cost of a sub 500cc engine also. The SV is pretty sweet, especially for the price.

My buddy just started on a gen1 sv650 for dirt cheap ($1200 USD) and loves it. I gave it a test ride before he bought it and I don't think it's too much for a beginner at all. The throttle response won't scare you and there's plenty of after-market parts for modding and repairs.

My first bike was a first gen SV650. 2nd was a '99 Monster M900. Between these two, I'd go with the SV. That X version just looks great. But....I wouldn't get either of these if I was in the market, at least not at the brand new price. Inevitably the suspension will start to bum you out after a while and that's a pricey thing to improve. The X used in two years though for $6000? Hell yes.

I have an older 07 monster that is still running strong but the parts and servicing cost are at that point where I’m probably going to spend more than the bikes value. I’m on the fence of getting a newer monster since I love it but I think the SV650 is beautiful, sportier and just a more reliable bike.

@@twrcrew8852 The funny thing. My friend has 2015 Panigale 1299 he bought it brand new and using it as his main bike for track and street till this very day and he has done ever 40k miles without any major issues or failures. And I replaced 2 engines back in 2017 on my track only gsxr750 which barely made 1000miles each. Ducati nowadays is very reliable motorcycles plus requires very long maintenance schedule. only issue is the part price and availability.

@@twrcrew8852 Both bikes ridden in a similar way on the track we go to our local track once/twice a week. It's not like he is holding back because it's his main bike and even so my bike was brand new it had no business to have such short lifespan it's a track bike after all. Also, the data you're using came from 2014 customers reports which I kinda doubt the legitimacy of it. We have no actual data about who files the report an actual owner or anybody or by failures rates what they're referring too? any recall work or actual major failures. I never owned Ducati but never heard of complains of actual Ducati owners but the ones who had Ducati back in the 90s I'm more of Yamaha and Aprilia and according to the survey Aprilia should literally blow up the moment you take it out the dealership but I've 2017 tuono 1100 for over 2 years and done 23k miles without a single issue, not even a small oil leak. So I don't buy the legitimacy of that survey.

COGEN dampeners. and fork adjusters. put a GSX750 rear shock. major improvement in riding the SV650. the SV650 is a good bike, just be ready to UPGRADE if you purchase one.
