Hey Yammie, young (22) adv squid here. The reason I picked a BMW 750gs "old man bike" was because I liked the seating position as opposed to any of the other kinds of bike. I am also not delusional and know the vast majority of my riding is pavement with the occasional unpaved road, so I knew it was more advantageous to get an ADV as opposed to a dual sport. I kinda hate to say it but I LOVE the bike. I drove it all the way from Birmingham, AL to Yellowstone National Park and back and never had an issue. Seat is comfy as hell and the windshield does a fantastic job.

Another young (24) adv squid here. Got the 750gs a little while ago, but it's been great. Needed something that could carry all my climbing gear that was also comfortable for long road-trips and suitable for taking off-road. I've been on a few adventures with it, including through a bog on the side of a hill. My only real complaints are that the windshield is slightly too low for me and it has a thing for covering itself in dirt (seriously, it throws it everywhere). Never understood why people call it an 'old mans bike', wonder if that's spillover from the previous generation of GS.

You missed the type of ADV rider who like to ride everyday (rain or shine), do oil changes, change tires, know almost everything about their bikes, hit the twisties like a pro, hit gravel like a pro, do BDR every year, have emergency assistance kits, first-aid kits,goto the coffee shop and even do grocery and home-depot shopping for the family...they basically ride a car on 2 wheels 😀

I haven't ridden one of those but a friend of mine managed to put 175,000 miles on it with just regular maintenance. My Italian bikes are fun and reliable but I very seriously doubt that I can put so many miles on them without major repairs and draining my bank account. Maybe the Moto Guzzi will do it, and my Rotax powered Aprilia Tuono but I'll probably have to overhaul them a few times

​@@williamanderson4029 As a reformed BMW owner I can confirm that I had to do all of the maintenance on my BMW bike. But that had more to do with the fact most motorcycle shops refused to work on the bike even for simple things as soon as they heard it was a BMW(which includes independent shops that claimed on their website to work on everything). BMW specific shops didn't like working on it once it got out of warranty either. I've haven't had similar problems with Honda, KTM, or Yamaha.

2010 1200GS rider. It's full of scratches, dirt, and long-caked mud. 80/10 dirt tires get me into all kinds of good trouble. 11,000km on it in 2020 and none in a Starbucks parking lot. There was the time I had to be found by Search & Rescue cops in the middle of the night, but that's another story. GO ADV.

I got a 2011 R12GS last summer. I rode sport tourers for years and averaged 10-15k/year living in Minnesota. “Did I just see a guy on a motorcycle when there is snow on the ground?!” I took a decade off and decided I’d try a bike that could tour but wouldn’t be quite as sketchy when I tried to get it up crappy mountain “roads.” And I’m too cheap to buy over-roasted coffee.

Too late to comment? I'm a new rider and bought a CSC RX4 as a first bike; its on the way! I fall in the number four category I think - in it not for speed but for the experience and sights/sounds/smells. Commute too, there's a lot of construction where I am and I wanted a practical machine that I didn't have to go out and feel the need to trick out excessively. It's not here yet but I went ahead and got the paperwork done, so it's practice time when it arrives! I'm 36, 5'10" , 170lbs, with a wife and two kids. Yound adv squid and a dual sport adv guy here...I'm 19 and I got a ktm 790 adventure r a year ago and I have rode it every single day I wanted something that has no problem passing anything on the road ...does wheelies and can take some pure motorcross tires that I keep at 10 psi and rip around dirt or asphalt...not afraid to rip it out in some gnarly singletrack with my friends on their 250s that can't keep up ...and I ride with my friends on harleys that can't keep up...it's really an entirely different kind of riding

Love my tiger1200! I think they are the ultimate bike for people who can only really have one bike. I can have fun in the twisties, crush highways on long trips, and handle dirt roads and light trails without worry. If you want to do a little of everything motorcycles have to offer and can only own 1 bike, ADVs are the way to go. My favorite class of bike.

Back as a young fella I did 2 Aussie laps and heaps of bike rallies together with touring on an old ‘78 Suzuki GS550B or my ‘81 Yamaha DT400. Back then the choice was simple road or dirt squirt. Things were simple with no such things as mobile phones or even all the fancy toys we see today.

Underrated comment. I'm 6'4" and would have loved to have decked out a dirt bike for road travel, but there's no way in hell I'm sitting like that for more than a couple hours. Just got a used v-strom 650 from someone with a heart for convenience mods, and am loving every second on it. Who knows, maybe one day I'll be That Guy with a mountain bike zip tied to the back.

Speaking on behalf of the young ADV squids out there. I went from a DRZ 400 SM to an Africa Twin Adventure sport for a host of reasons. 1. It still wheelies 2. You can tour it like a sport touring bike 3. Offroad it like a dual sport 4. The comfort and wind protection you get over a sport bike and last but not least 5. Insurance is way cheaper than buying a rocket haha hopefully more young squids hop on the ADV trend

But after owning an aprilia caponord for 3 years, which also had a terrible reputation, and it worked flawlessly, I decided to put my fears aside and take the risk. So far I havents regretted it. It seems that after 1190, ktm has done a very good job improving it's reliability and quality

My top picks would be T7 or AT for real adv. My cheaper option would be drz or klxr. If you really going remote places better to have reliability. Not everyone can have a film crew an rescue team follow us around.

Ha, #3 here. 65 and just picked up my KTM 390 ADV. Plenty of superbikes and track days in my history. A Multistrada (with just a modest amount of hi-viz and reflectorized tape) also in the garage for the big asphalt tours (in my case think states rather than coffee shops). Heading to Death Valley as soon as the lodgings are open (tent camping later...maybe). Mods on the KTM are mostly on the performance side or the ones that make it more likely I won't get stuck somewhere. But yeah, there are many features I completely understand but just don't care about, and I no longer need a louder exhaust (on these two at least; I succumbed for one on my Moto Guzzi V7). Now just waiting to get my hands on a CT125.

So I met this old guy while I was playing with my XR650R in the mountains. His oil glass cover (Yamaha XT400? from early eighties) was shattered so we nursed him back to his bungalow. He promised to show us some more tracks on his spare bike. On the way back I wondered how dilapidated his stand by bike will look. Will it even start. I thought this old man was going to waste our precious riding time. But then I struggled to keep up with him. At his bungalow he promptly produced a shiny Honda CR450F. That was the last time I put an unknown rider in a pre-judged box.

I am the 40+ y/o that got tired of the limitation and pretentiousness of cruisers and needed more ground clearance, more lean angle but can't stand the gas tank shoved up against the crotch and chest feel of a crotch rocket. A lil late to seeing this video though thought I was the only young adv hooligan out there. I ride a KTM 990 adv R and absolutely love the thing. No ABS, traction control, just one liter of fun. The thing will pop wheelies when I treat it like my 450 though I know and it knows very well it isn’t. Sounds amazing, looks amazing, feels amazing, wouldn’t trade it for anything!

As an ADV bike rider, I really don’t know much of the types you describe, although some elements of some types are out there (there are a few hard-core-ish folks for sure). I think many of us are practical riders that just seek out slightly off-road trips, but I wouldn’t look for a swamp or cliff to drop off into. Brett Tkacs has some videos on skill rating for adv riders. I would guess that most (other than pure street riders) adv riders hang in the avg/moderate skill level and ride all over the place. I was hoping for an honest and real snapshot of adv riders, but just cannot relate to most of this video. Especially the KTM folks...those 1x90 adventure bike riders do some impressive stuff. I’d like to see more off-road Multistrada riders, but they are the real unicorns.

Thanks for the video! I'm the dual sport rider type. I was chuckling pretty good and then the dual sport adventure rider came up. I was still laughing thinking I'd get roasted pretty good. Mostly positive, that's awesome. It's all good fun. I came from a Honda 919. Moving out into the sticks with miles of gravel roads prompted the change. Not to mention I'm closer to 60 than 50 years old. Yes, I do have a paper map tucked tucked away on the CRF300L with full rear/side racks :)

Yammie, I think you're wrong about ADV's being the SUV's of the motorcycle world. At least mid size ADVs. I think they are more like Subarus. Not overly fast and can be rather boring, but they are practical.

I guess I'm the 'Old ADV Rider', kind of. Started out on Honda XL's back in the 70's. Graduated to a 76' KZ900 and only went faster from there. Owned a few dirt bikes along the way, but mainly super sports for the next 40 years! i sold my 1000 for a DRZ400SM and having a blast on it. Don't have a need for crazy speed anymore and miss whipping through forest trails, but still love dragging a knee on country roads on a trip to the store. 🙂

I, in fact, am a young adv squid. I just bought my first motorcycle ever and chose the Kim 390 adventure. The reason I chose a small adv bike is because i plan to use it as my daily driver to work and classes in my college town. The mounting option on an adv are the best in my opinion and they handle the aesthetic of luggage the best. With the added benefit of taking it on some trails of I so choose.

Yeah this video is a year old but had to comment. 53 year old ADV veteran here. Pretty accurate , but then again, there are guys that actually are Adventurists, live and breath it, help others get into it, and can still strap squids on R-1's with a moderately loaded "Old mans bike".
