@Caiden Leonard Well, I'm not an expert or anything, but I'm sure it's a lot deeper than that. From what I can tell, she needs Senpai. No one else can make her feel like he does. It's not just emotional connections and bonds. It's on a much deeper and sophisticated level than that. He cannot be replaced by anyone because her feelings and what he can unlock in Ayano is something that is unique to him. As Yan Dev mentioned, she needs him more than she needs water, food, or even breathing. So to say that she has an emotional attachment to him is a clear understatement. Just wanted to make something clear, I don't mean to offend. (on a family member's account)

I always just assumed that, in its true psychology terms, Yandere-chan was a psychopath. They don't feel emotion, but can develop obsessions. Getting it passed down from Yandere-chan's mom wouldn't be implausible, because all psychopaths, narcissists, and sociopaths pass down a gene called the "warrior gene", and it is passed to all offspring of psychopaths, narcissists, and sociopaths. It doesn't guarantee that the child will turn out like their parent(s), but tendencies will be there, even if the child isn't one themselves. This would explain it being handed down from Yandere-chan's mom, to Yandere-chan. I don't know, it's just a theory I guess.

I feel like Ayano is a great character to play seeing as how she is a blank slate and is a reflection of oneself. If she is a reflection of oneself, I definitely would be more interested if she develop hobbies or interests based on a player's choice while still having the feeling or craving for Senpai. Senpai is in a way the reason for her change as her backstory presents. She pretends to be normal for her dad to be happy and she does it again the second time for her dad. What if this time when she tries to act normal for Senpai as she did before with for her dad, she actually becomes and experience normal life with real emotions. Yes, its smart to consider making other character more interesting for her lack of being interesting but she is still a main part of the game such as a player is taking into consideration when a game is developed. This game, once finished, will be a major accomplishment and I would happily be patient enough for further changes. I also understand the people's need for wanting more considering the game thus far but is it also important to consider the game and its developers hard work and dedication so far. That is why I will gladly and patiently wait for a game such as this.

What he means by constant complaints is that a good portion of the fanbase he first built for this game started with places like 4chan and later 8chan, message boards of notorious contraniasm. You'll have one person make a legitimately good post with good constructive criticism or ideas and the very next post after it is "get fucked, fag" with a picture of Yan-chan being skullfucked or some other nasty shit. As the dev got a bigger fanbase and more attention, the 4/8chan crowd turned on him pretty quickly and called him a sellout for asinine reasons. You can only take that shit so much before you write them off as a bunch of NEETs who don't know what the fuck they want.

To be honest, I don't think it is too late to change Yandere-chan's personality. I think it will be a bit strange at first, but that is only because we have grown accustomed to her current personality. Kind of like when your bedroom has stayed a color for so long and then you decide to repaint the room a different color. It will be a bit strange at first, but after a little while you will get used to it.

it would be cool if normally the game is less saturated. Instead of when yandere chan walks into senpais aura and it turns pink, the game would actually become more saturated. i.e. yandere chan is starting to feel warmth, light, and emotion, like yandere dev said. it would also be cool if this emotion would gradually fade away the longer yandere chan is outside of his aura, which causes her to become more insane and more sloppy, thus making the game harder. it would also make sense because yandere chan will be forced to "stalk" senpai in order to remain sane.

You could have the colors slightly over-saturated and have added nature/background sound effects when Senpai is around, and once you are away from him for a few hours, color and sound slowly start go become weaker, with Yandere-chan speaking to herself yearning for him. Doing that for the first time right at the start of the game, this could be an introduction to that mechanic. Once a full day or weekend has passed without seeing him, the color saturation could become very bleak with Yandere-chan getting more sloppy in her actions to emphasize what the "withdrawal" does to her. That could be used as some sort of hard mode for the game

@Sonia Escalada basically - since YanChan gains emotions once she is near Senpai, shouldn't her main objective also be to not come close to senpai for some time after comitting a crime or with some evidence on her (like a knife in her inventory or bloody clothes). Since she gains emotions near him, shouldn't she become aware that what she did was horrible and disgusting and thus fail the game? It is a much better solution to making the game harder than having immortal besties of rivals.

I think it would be fun if the rivals have likeable personalities with flaws and virtues. Then as a player, I would have the challenge of deciding /how/ to deal with the character. Killing is easy if you don't like the rival at all. But if you have conflicted thoughts about the character, you'll put more thought into your planning and be more creative in your way of removal.

I'm Torn. Personally, I love Ayano Aishi, aside from the fact that her default look is incredibly cute, she has an an amazing voice actress and a totally awesome family history. As she stands, she's a lot like Red from the original Pokemon games. Yes, she's a blank slate, but the characters around her ensure that the story and environments are the focal point of the game. That said, this is based off of Anime, not other Video Games... and so the blank slate arch-type, to me, seems less fitting. Don't get me wrong, she's awesome as is... but I love the idea of her having a more developed character... perhaps growing to enjoy the hobbies she undertakes, which the player could choose. This would allow the player to maintain control while giving a unique story to each player. But, that's just my two cents. Either way, the game is amazing, the characters kick ass... and the gameplay is masterful. Keep up the good work man, we're with you whatever you decide!

I like the idea of a “craving” for happiness, but I’m also completely fine with her emotionless-ness. Ayano is one of those characters that I’d always play as without customizing (which I do a lot in other games) because she’s, to me, deep. She’s not shallow at all, because she’s interesting even if others think she’s rather blank. Looking forward to the updates!

I think it's important to develop the characters as well as their backstories. I think it'll make the game even more interesting, and thus have more of a replayable value (_Last of Us_ , _Mass Effect_ , _Fall Out_ , etc.). I always see video games as "interactive stories"; things that you can't replicate in either film nor literature. Expanding on Yandere-chan's backstory is a great step in the right direction because it can create, not only sympathy for the character, but also a sense of understanding (i.e. _Dexter_). You can add a layer of ambiguity, but it's also important to put hints/visual references to past events within the game itself: giving it more of a "Show, Don't Tell" approach. Or maybe go for _The Killing Joke_ approach where Yandere-chan's backstories can be multiple choice. Either way, I think the game gets better every time you update it. I'm looking forward to see what you'll come up with.

This is what i commented a while ago: I think it would be best to keep the characters more simple and the story more complex. I think giving yandere-chan too much emotion would make her just too middle of the road. what you have created now sets a stark contrast with the rest of the characters. It makes it that by default nobody can really understand her, by giving her emotions it would make her actions more justifiable. Her emotionlessness makes her stand out as a character, giving her emotions would make her feel more like somebody as Osana, non socially acceptable ways, but justifiable by the means. Make Yandere somebody who nobody can justify, as somebody who would go any length, but indeed let the player choose that very length. I understand that to many people having a character with more emotions makes the character more pleasing (for ships or whatever) But as a game designed to work out a tv trope to something more, it is best to keep the characters very basic cliche's, but make them more likeable via backstories or have them have more than just their surface. Same with Kizana, snooty is a nice cliche to start out with, how about you make her unlikeble on the surface, but somebody who just values creativity underneath?

Suggestion: There’s something called “Alexithymia” which makes it hard to have emotions making it seem they don’t have any emotion. If you want to make Ayano to have no emotion, give them Alexithymia to make it seem sense

(Please Read This Yandere Dev, I think it could actually help with this) I'm going to speak from the mind of an aspiring author, the characters I love the most in your games are the ones with more personality and most likely a backstory that explains it, like Oka Ruto and how the way she acts and the fact that she wears something that covers her arms/wrists unlike almost every other character makes me think "She must be bullied a lot and depressed." or how when I see how Osoro Shidesu acts I think "I bet she's abused, maybe Taro found out and is helping her with it and that's why she loves him." I think of Ayano as a Kizami Yuuya from Corpse party combined with Josh from Until Dawn sort of character, someone who has a bad childhood or mental illness or both that causes them to act out and be this way, but it isn't their fault, they either aren't being properly medicated or treated for the illness or trauma which leads to them being off their leash and dangerous, but not of their own accord. You don't want your protagonist to be a blank slate, you want there to be something abotu her that makes people like or dislike her, like if you play the game one way she turns into the monster that she's been portrayed as so far and if she goes the peaceful root like befriending or matchmaking all her rivals she becomes a good character, a girl that just wants somebody to love her. A good way to actually show this would be if you took a glance over at Koumi, the person who made the Male!Rival characters. Something like 'The Pacifist ending' where this lonely and sad girl finds herself having not only Taro, but all the other rivals as her friends and she finally, finally feels love and companionship she had been missing her whole life. You could even factor her parents into it, like the ending where she's a monster her mother congratulates her and her father feels depressed because his daughter became a monster like her mother or on the other side of the coin her father says stuff like 'I'm so proud of you' and her mother is disappointing because she didn't follow in her footsteps. There is SO MUCH you could do with Ayano, don't waste the opportunity to make an amazing multi-layered character because you think that people won't like it because no matter what you do someone won't like it, it's just the way the world works.

I think it would be interesting if her emotions could develop differently depending on how you play the game. Using harmful tactics would cause her to develop toxically, going for a "good" ending would cause her to heal emotionally. It'd be a sort of progression, and each rival would help her feel a new thing, depending on how she deals with them. One example would be with the teacher rival. She wouldn't be portrayed as a teenage boy's fantasy, instead she'd be seen as a coercive sex offender that mae senpai increasingly imconfortable. Depending on how the game has been played up until that point, Ayano would either see her as just another rival, or her emotions would develop into empathy. She'd see senpai's discomfort, and get protective. The main elimiation methods for her would be killing (objectively bad) finding a suitor (i.e. a different victim for the teacher) or getting her arrested (proper justice). Another idea I like is the delinquent rival merely using senpai as an emotional crutch. I'd imagine she comes from a wealthier family, but is badly abused, and maybe lost her father, hence the need for a positive male figure in her life. Having variation for the type of affection each rival has for senpai will make the game much deeper. Eventually, depending on how the game has progressed, Ayano could keep past rivals as friends, and almost start to care about them. One hypothetical scene I've thought of for a "good route" would be Ayano at home just watching a comedy show and suddenly, after a certain bit, starts laughing. Genuine laughter. She got the joke, She laughs until hurts, and she just keeps replaying the bit the whole night, awestruck at this new development. This game has a huge amount of potential to have some amazing characters and character development. Eventually, she'd go from obsessed, to truly in love.

Having likable rivals would kinda make sense in the fashion that they WOULD ask out senpai on Friday. If they weren't a very likable character, I get the feeling that even if the tree is "blessed" that your crush will always say yes that senpai would say no. Therefore, the character wouldn't really be a rival if senpai would say no to them on a logical level rather than "I need a unique opponent." becoming the basis for the character's personality.

Well, I like the idea of giving Yandere chan a background to give some deep to her character. However if you don't want to change her emotionless persona, you don't have to. You can give depth to her character by using it as a plot device. She can be a deep character, without the need to add emotions into the mix. You can have her slowly developing them, depending on the player choices. And show this development through cut scenes… at the end of each week, for the sake of giving them a timeline. For example, if the player chose to embark on a genuinely nice path (not dripping any blood and going out of their way to be kind) she can start developing positive emotions. Like laughing suddenly at a tv show late at night, because she got the joke. She would keep replaying the moment, and laugh until she cries of joy. The new and overwhelming feelings of happiness, that was foreign to her before, she is experiencing it now. This could even make her gain something she didn't even knew existed… hope. This pacific Yan chan has the potential to grow to be a kind character, who genuinely but unknowingly cares about others. Deeply so. On the opposite side of the coin, if the player is a shameless murderer, Yan chan will retrieve herself further in her insanity. The emotions that senpai makes her feel could grow dull over time, until they are meaningless. And so, once again, she feels nothing at all. Nothing, but bloodlust that is. Since killing became such a daily task that she no longer cares for senpai, but for the adrenaline product of the killing sprees she goes unto "for his sake". Or, seen through a different perspective. Her obsession could grow, and grow, until she falls unto full insanity. Becoming worse that her mother. Dunno, just throwing ideas unto the air. About Kizana though… yeah, she doesn't have to be a total snob, but she's supposed to be a himedere, right? So, not so likable either.

I hope Yandere Dev takes your idea into consideration, but I'm not the developer, so I can't make him put it in the game. I really hope that Yandere Dev sees your comment and at least thinks about it, because I think that your idea would improve gameplay a great deal.

This isn't really a good idea. I also think there should be different endings based on how you play but not like this. This kind of thing just really bothers me because it is so naive - if the character is a killer they can't feel positive emotions, have no interests besides killing and are nothing more than an evil demon who just wants to ruin everyone's life, while if they reach their goals in a peaceful way they suddenly become a good and kind perfect angel, even if they have selfish motives like Ayano, because "friendship and kindness solves everything". It doesn't matter whether Ayano is sadistic, manipulative, violent or non-violent, she is a selfish character and she needs to stay that way. If she wasn't she wouldn't be trying this hard to get a boy to love her. A "normal" person just wouldn't do that. Ayano is selfish and, more or less, crazy and I think it would be best if she stayed that way in every ending, even if the rest of her personality depends on the way you play.

All I'd say about giving Yandere-chan a deeper back story or a story around her depends upon how confident you feel that you can write a an interesting and compelling narrative @Yanderedev. If you don’t think you could come up with anything that is better than the narrative the fans generate for her then I'd just leave her as the blank slate, abit like Agent 47 who you've compared this game to previously. But I must say some of your ideas for narrative are quite interesting, so I think with your commitment to the game you will come up with something good. Or like you say bounce your ideas around various people to generate a greater product. I think you are imaginative enough to write your own back story for Yandere-chan that the fans can get on board with so I say go for it =)
