Why does everywhere else I look it says the 3rd tone is down then up?

The third tone has traditionally been taught as a "falling-rising" tone (and the symbol looks like it drops and then rises), but if you listen to native speakers, you realize this isn't actually how the third tone sounds in real speech. When non-native speakers learn the third tone as a "falling-rising" tone, they often end up pronouncing it incorrectly - which leads to frustration when native speakers don't understand you! @Fiker Gaming I think you should go back. If you were able to study for a month INTENSELY, It's worth it. It's very hard to get back motivation, but sometimes you just have to force yourself to get back on track. I'm sure someday these skills will pay off and you'll be glad you've had the initiative to learn. If you're really that hesitant to learn, at least try to learn the fun way. For example; one chinese character a day in a spare time, and try to remember it throughout the day ;)

When we use tones in English, they are more of an expression, the tones for Chinese words are to do with different word meanings

That's exactly right! I think for many people, it's a surprise to realize they already use tones when they are speaking - to show their emotion, or lifting their tone to ask a question. It makes tackling Chinese tones a lot less scary when you realize you can already make these sounds with your voice.

that's helpful to keep in mind because I've heard english speakers learning mandarin (including myself hahaha) change tones when they want to convey a certain emotion, which is wrong and can totally change the meaning!

there is a dutch dialect (in belgium) that uses tones to change the meaning of words (I have had misunderstandings with them due to this, as I only speak standard dutch and a dialect without the use of tones, luckily they know standard dutch and understand me)... I wish I spoke that dialect, I suspect it's easier for them to get into the mandarin tones.

OMG! The third tone is flat most of the time!!! Almost every site/book teaching the tones illustrates the third tone as a bounce. And then when you learn the first words you're utterly confused, because they're spoken completely different. This video was an eye opener. I guess this has already been said a thousand times, but thank you so much. Til now I thought Chinese is ridiculously complicated, but now it turns out to be a lot of fun. :-)

We recommend you first get a foundation for spoken Mandarin before you start to learn Chinese characters. It’s a lot easier to learn how to read and write when you already know the vocabulary and sounds the characters you are learning form. And it’s a lot easier to focus on your pronunciation and the basic grammar and vocabulary of spoken Mandarin when you aren’t also trying to memorize hundreds of characters. +Hari Pathak I don't think it's her Taiwanese dialect accent. The third tone in Chinese actually is not FULL third tone when Chinese say it: We did half third tone. NOT all Chinese teachers teach equally. Some may just start and still trying to figure out how to teach, some may be good but didn't tell you the half third tone because he/she thinks it will confuse the students, so they don't even mention it just for students' sake. Keep in mind, even third tone is like a check mark, but when Chinese say it, it does sounds like what Yangyang Laoshi said: uh.... (but shorter within half second, not like what she demonstrate over 1 second which she might just want to emphasize it to make the point). You can practice with saying: 好. It is short and low. As a Chinese teacher myself, I do think Yangyang Laoshi is a good teacher and teaches with logic mind to make all her learners understand easily. Of course, she may not teach everything because it's not the point at the time (according to students' ability - all teachers do that) and the students are not there yet (no need for them to know yet). Of course, each teacher has their own teaching philosophy. You just have to ask! Also clear one point: NOT all Chinese teachers from China speak GOOD Beijing accent. Trust me, I heard them all. Some even speak worse accent then Taiwanese teachers. I can only say: there are too many dialects in Chinese language and a lot of teachers have strong dialect accent. That's all. Where the teachers come from is irrelevant! Hope this answers your question instead of making it more confusing.

YangYang, I know this video is old, but I have to say I am shocked, surprised, and super delighted with how you just taught me four tones of Chinese! I love learning languages but I have always decided that Asian languages were a total No-No for me. I was afraid of the alphabets, tones, and sounds that are so different from other European languages, that I figured I would never, ever, be able to learn them. I was afraid. But recently, I got turned on to Korean and I was hooked on my first Asian language! But I still felt the Chinese was a language I would never, ever try, out of fear. I came upon this video by total accident, and just started watching it because it was talking about the tones; and with one simple video, you have totally changed my head around. Now I find that I am utterly in love with it and interested in trying to learn this language! Thank you so much for making this video and showing people, that Chinese is not a language to be afraid of but just to be listening to carefully and embraced.

Great approach for English speaking learners. The best way to learn tones is probably not to consider Chinese a tonal language. You speak the way you hear others speak. It's more like when you're learning a new song, you don't have to memorize every note Do Re Mi in a new song, instead, you just follow the music that's flowing in your brain, and that's pretty much how you learn the tones. A 3 year-old Chinese kid can speak in correct tones without knowing there's a thing called tones.

It's interesting how he'd been able to correctly use all that many tones years before he knew they ever existed. You don't tell if a tone's right by looking up the tone numbers 1 2 3 4 in you brain, you can tell a tone is wrong because nobody says it like that, simple, that's essentially how native Chinese speakers brains work.

A suggestion which I have found helps me. I have struggled like never before with learning a foreign language. It is difficult to remember which tone when reading Chinese characters/pingyin. But i have found that by using 4 different highlighter pens, set a different color for for each tone and keep to it by coloring the text. Quite quickly you get the remember the color associated with each tone and whether Pingyin or the Chinese characters I find that I am remembering from the color which tone applies to that word/character. Hope it helps others.

This is such a fun way to remember tones, because linguists actually think Chinese shifted from a non-tonal language to a tonal language based on how old words were spoken. There are super old consonants and other sounds that dropped out of spoken Chinese centuries ago, but it affect the pitch of your voice as you spoke it, and where these old consonants became obsolete, it’s pretty consistent that certain consonants just became certain tones. If I find the video where I learned this, I’ll come back and leave the link in the reply. It was very cool!

Very clever, indeed. I found out that the combination of the falling tone + neutral tone is what one makes when speaking 2 syllable words in italian. For example: pizza, mamma, donna, libro.

Im a native russian speaker i had a really Hard time learning english intonation at university. Russian is a pretty flat language with little intonation apart from questions, thats why we ofte sound to english native speakers as boring or uninterested in what's going or around us, but ive never thougt learning english intonation would actually learn chinese. I tooka semester of chinese in university, learnt pretty many characters, but all tones but the questioning sounded 100% the same ŝo i couldnt say anything correctly or understand much. Inconclusion, its much easier to learn chinese though english than russian

English also uses tones in single words. For example, final voiced consonants cause the previous vowel to have a lower tone. The main difference between "buck" and "bug" is the "bug" has a longer, lower tone.

theorically there are particles (words) that you use at the end of phrases to make this. But in reality, I hear native speakers using tones just like english speakers all the time. That's because the language's tones are not absolute, they are relative, so as long as you elevate your tone during the word, it will be a second tone, no matter if you start very low or higher up. So expressive tones in chinese are done by raising or lowering your whole window (your whole chart)

I've been dabbling in various courses as recommended by non-native Mandarin speakers before putting any cash into it but struggling to get tones and basics right as pinyin spelling is not always the way as a native English speaker we actually speak.
