I have seen many videos insisting that the tones are really easy - if they were easy - we (foreigners) wouldnt find them so difficult and keep making mistakes !! THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP !! Much appreciated. This is one of the best "chinese tone" videos around.

I agree. Just a small suggestion. It would be great if you do the pronunciation and the hand gesture at the same time. In this video, you start the pronunciation at the end of the gesture.

I’ve been struggling with this for a while! It was a really good idea to compare it to english words - “what” for 2nd tone, “well” for 3rd tone, and “stop” for 4th tone. I had heard of questions=rising tone, but this was the first I’ve heard of the tricks for the others!

I find chinese very easy. People find it difficult bevause of its alphabets and I personally find saying the tones quickly difficult. But this video helped me a lot. It changed my perspective towards Chinese.

Tones are not the same as singing. Practically all of us speak with tones, even for non-tonal languages. Unless, of course, you speak like a monotonous robot. She already demonstrated those instances in English with similar sounding tones.

I just never got the answer on one thing about tonal languages, like mandarin. If it's so dependent on tones for the meaning of words, how do they manage it in songs? Do they have to pick words whose tones will fit the melody of the song, or tones are just ignored and you have to be supposing which is the word intended?

Subject to the melody of the song, but most of the words are correctly pronounced in Chinese. I don't know if it was deliberately considered when writing the lyrics or by coincidence.

I'm a beginner in korean, so maybe that's why this was sugested to me. I watched it out of curiosity and although chinese is such an intimidating language, your way of explaining is so easy to understand. You have a gift. Maybe I'll give chinese a try in a few years because I really want to learn as many languages as I can, but I like taking things slow. As a native spanish speaker, it has always fascinated me the complexity of the chinese language. Loved the video!

I think this video gives everyone hope that that can in fact learn Chinese. I never thought I would be able to learn Chinese mainly because I never understood the tones and how they're pronunced but after this video I'm amazed at how well you're able to explain the different tones to English speakers. Well done 👍 Obviously it will take a very long time with practice and patience to learn but it's still more achievable than I thought!

The reference to English words is very helpful, IMO. For the neutral tone I think of it like Morse Code. The long tone and the neutral (shorter) tone. That's the mnemonic I'm using for now. Thanks for such clear, distinctive vocalizations, it helps to understand the subtleties, to me.

This is such a simple but so important lesson for beginners like myself. Something that doesnt get teached by duolingo for example. Of course, doulingo doesnt replace a teacher but for really early beginners it can get frustrating. This helps to make it way better and help to step up ones mandarin game. Thank you.

@@milkyway6021 I'm a Cantonese speaker and Mandarin is childishly easy. Mandarin is the easiest Chinese dialect of all and when I found out it only had four tone I blew up, Cantonese 6 tones (and additional 3 more) and they all sound the same to a non-native speaker. Ppl would never realize the simplicity of Mandarin if they aren't a Chinese speaker of another Dialect :P

Ever since watching CDrama, I've picked up so many words in Mandarin Chinese. It's such a beautiful language to me. I can't help but want to learn more & more of it. I'll never be fluent but at least I can learn & have fun. Thank you! Xièxiè. :)

@Natty Fatty it's totally accurate, this is how mandarin is taught when I was primary student I was wondering why she didn't teach the characters for each word as well,but maybe she wants the learners to master it in a way that english-speaking people can perfectly relate to,then only she'll proceed to introduce the chinese characters

Easiest language is indian HINDI language ! Approx 32 or 36 character and each character has 12 different form . That's it !! . Native can read easily after 1 week study 👍 yeah it's true ✌️

I aM From India . I love learn others country languages . your teaching skills is very hao (good). but more than other country I love Hindi language you should also want to learn Hindi that so beautiful and simple and also Sanskrit because you are best so I think you want to learn and teach another student who's like wants to learn other country Languages........................ like me friends always keep smile... on your face and ready to teach our country and anothers country .
