I have had to educate several people about the 10mm over the years. It is essentially the ballistic equivalent of 357 magnum. That was the original intent when it was designed. However, you generally only get that level of power out of boutique ammo companies or with hand loads. Most standard factory loadings are somewhat underpowered. It is a great cartridge and pretty powerful for an autoloader, but is not nearly the power of many of the revolver cartridges.

I became a cop in 1987, I am guilty of loving guns so much that I have carried a wide variety of duty and off-duty handguns. I started out with a .357 revolver with a 5-shot backup, and as soon as our agency allowed us, I switched to 9mm. Then we were allowed 45 acp, so of course, I purchased a 45. Then Glock became a thing here and I tried my hand. After that, it was .40 cal. Then back to 9, and recently, I dug my old P220 in 45 out of my sock drawer and carried it again. I have always been a pretty good shot, so I have never felt under-gunned. If we were allowed to carry big bore magnum revolver rounds, I am sure I would have one. When you spoke about firing the 6th round, it made me think. Any time I carry, I have a second gun. You will see videos of people trying out revolvers and more often than not you can tell they were not classically trained in the way of the wheelgun. They do not count their shots so they end up clicking on fired chambers. If they try to speed-load, they do it based on TV or something. There is a lost art to revolver carry and even though I rarely carry one, I feel perfectly comfortable doing so. It really is important where the first round goes. Keep up the great content.

For me the best 'bear cartridge' is to not go into bear country. Do what you want to but if I'm not at the top of the species food chain I don't go there. I've got no problem with the caliber of cartridge anyone wants to carry so long as they can hit what they're aiming at and not hit me 30 feet away from their target. I've got nothing against 9mm or 10mm but I don't carry them. I shoot both well but I tend to shoot my revolvers better so I carry those instead.

When the 45 Colt came out for the Army. Colt single action with a 7 1/2 inch barrel. 250 gr cast bullet over 30 grs of black powder running 900 fps. It was reported that load would shoot completely thru an Indian's horse at 100 yards. Look at the writings of John Linebaugh. (RIP) His 45 Colt loads weren't that hot and would pass thru an elk. I'll stick with the kinetic energy of a heavy 44 or 45 cast bullet without getting beat up by the golly whopper magnums.

The auto loading crowd always uses the same arguments to justify their lack of thinking skills. Velocity, Energy and Capacity are the arguments they repetitively use. They don't want to discuss the items that make a cartridge effective. Bullet shape, weight and diameter are truly what matters. They always like to throw in the very mysterious and magical sounding "Modern Bullet Technology" and talk about the time they shot some jello and wow what great results they got. Unfortunately, most of the KZbin gun channels are now just infomercials, they are only a few steps away from the old tv celebrities selling time shares on QVC

@@YellowjacketGTO In general, marksmanship trumps capacity and diameter and sectional density determine effectiveness. You cannot rely on bullet expansion. No matter how many jello block tests are performed. Hollow points are not very reliable at the relatively slow velocities that handguns operate. The "older" lead semi jacketed hollow point or lead flat nose do work reliably. But they dont function very well in auto loaders. Bullet design in auto loading cartridges all suffer from this, its a compromise for reliability.

1) Yankee Marshall is a bafoon. 2) You are counting on there being only 1 attacker or 1 bear. A revolver is good, but your antiquated arguement is no longer true anymore. It just isn't. 3) 9MM >> 357 Sig >> 357 Mag >> 44 mag. Anything else is not needed unless it is a .410 or 45 LC which can be great in certain scenarios, but not in a revolver capacity. 4) Stop telling yourself that 6 shots is enough especially in a high stress situation with your families lives on the line. 5) Ported Glock 23 with extended.magazine and all of the 3 complete slides of each caliber combined is still less expensive and more versatile than one of those revolvers.

Personally, I carry 10mm (Glock 40) for bear and mountain lion defense in the mountains, and carry 9mm for self-defense in town. I sold my 1911 because I can't hit the broad side of a barn with it. The fault is mine, not the design because John Moses Browning (peace be upon him) was a genius. A coworker bought it and can shoot .45 more accurately than with a 9mm, which is rare in my experience. Moral of the story: to each his own and carry what works for you.

I like the 45acp. I mean they tried to get close to 45c. A 230 at 900 fps can handle most anything down here. They even work well on hogs up close with good shot placement. I love my 44. I don't know if any handgun is. It had to be 800 pounds of spring steel and rawhide. I wouldn't want less than a .30-06 and preferably a 45-70 or some African dangerous game round. I know it won't take the pressures of a Ruger, so my load in the hills is very vintage. 40 grains of 3f black powder behind a 250 gr hard cast bullet. The black powder lets me get more velocity without stressing the gun. It's not perfect; but it did the job in 1880. I'm down to three rifles two of them are .22's and Dad's old 30-30. The .30-30 will do most anything in a pinch. Sometimes you gotta run with what you brung.

I agree with you in the situation you've laid out here. One on one... However, where I live, trouble tends to come in packs, the word rhymes with 'bangs'. You can hope after the first one or two fall, the rest would high tail it out of there. But, probably not. Even still, I like a 357 or better for self defense. And I like knowing I am not gonna have to deal with jams, or stuck ejection, or whatever. And, well, I am just a cowboy at heart🤠.

I recently discovered your channel and wish to express my joy in your channels content. I find your no nonsense, straight talk, wisdom, dead on the money. I agree with your take on some of today’s ideas concerning self defense and all the wonder guns and calibers out there in semiautomatic form. I’ve been a hand loader for 32 years now and find that if I can’t do what needs doing with a heavy hand load in a 45 Colt, it doesn’t need doing. 335 grain gas checked hard cast LFN sitting atop a full charge of H110 is medicine to cure whatever is troubling you. Hats off to you, Sir. You are a man of higher thinking. Good job. Best of luck to you in the future.

I’m with ya on this whole rant..however I do disagree with you on when you said that “inter dimensional beings” or “Sasquatch” or whatever ppl want to call em angels, demons etc.. the reason I disagree is because that vast amount of research in the subject and credible first hand accounts of upstanding productive members of society have had.. also the research in physics and most notably (sound, frequency) studies have profoundly changed the scope of how we view reality in the scientific community.. and to truly be scientific about we must leave everything a theory to remain open to possibilities.. I will also like to leave you with this.. belief and knowledge are two different things, and WE all believe more than we know!! Whatever you believe or don’t believe is your religion, every human on earth has a belief it is inescapable!! P.S. they exist and when I say “they” I’m simply talking about other entities that exist in a different spectrum of frequency and vibration and it seems through all the evidence and research from a multitude of different sources that they can somehow enter our spectrum and so on.. are they apes? Or aliens.. well from what I’ve researched over the years “they” “it” can change how we perceive them.. so they are whatever it is they want to appear to be to us..

45 cap has some powerful variations, you can run 45 super which can be loaded hot like a 10mm, there’s also 460 Rowland, which is a very hot 45acp with a millimeter longer brass so you don’t accidentally chamber it in an unmodified firearm. My favorite is 45 colt or 45 super loaded hot to almost 460 Rowland power. Which makes it close to an average 44 magnum out of a 1911. 45 colt loaded with 40 grains of black is a nice round. For me 9mm has a place as being cheap to shoot and practice with, I have a red dot and slicked up trigger and high capacity magazines and practice with it, and only for that reason I don’t mind carrying it for defense, I still prefer my 1911 commander in 45 because it feels like confidence in my hand and I love the feel of the bone grip. A 1911 commander 4 and 1/4 inch barrel side by side with a Glock 19 they look about the same size. That Glock 19 never made me feel a boost of confidence.

Love the 45 COLT CARTRIDGE in both my SAA revolver and a little hotter in my Blackhawk, I own a new CZ 75DB 9MM because my GLOCK 19x 9MM just not doing it for me accuracy wise. ordered a CZ75 DB after trying one at my club. I like old school mostly SSA REVOLVERS. HAVE A GLOCK 19X and was having a bad time thinking it was me, put a Timney trigger which did help, but I still believed it was just me. A range person said try this CZ75 compact, WOW! I shot WAY BETTER the first 5 rounds. I asked if it was reworked and he said NO. 25 more rounds and I ordered the CZ, My friend was going through the same with his Glock and shot better with his new SSA so he tried the CZ.. Same better target scoring. we ordered two CZ75s. I will keep GLOCK when riding my Harley for long hauls, only. For what it is worth... Always enjoy your work, But not so much with that Yankee fella, his presentation are too hyper for me, only watched 2 or 3 of his videos in the last 5 years...👍

I agree with your thoughts. YM does irritate me, although I find I agree with him on some things. I do disagree with him on .45 acp. As far as the other KZbinr, you failed to mention he couldn't hit the side of a barn if he was standing 5 feet in front of it, or locked in it for that matter. In bear country, I'll take my Smith 629 over my 10mm all day long. I've been shooting 10mm since the late 90s ( I like the cartridge) and while it is a good autoloader cartridge, it just doesn't do what a .44 magnum, a 45 Colt (loaded right), or a .41 mag will do. Also, a 10mm isn't a .357 magnum either. People have really made the 10mm into something mythical.

I live in Southeast N.M & have killed a mule deer with my Ruger Blackhawk in .45colt & I also carry a S&W 686 .357magnum & I have a S& W 9.MM.Shield ; but when I'm in Alaskan bear country ; I would probably carry my Ruger American .308...in N.M. we have black bears & some Native Americans have allegedly seen a Sasquatch up around Farmington; I think if either a black bear or the alleged Bigfoot were hot on my trail, then either my Ruger .45 or my 686 .357 would be enough with proper shot placement & heavy flat nose bullets would solve my problems. On a personal note, before I retired from the Volunteer Fire department; I was a member of the International Fire Marshal's Association; which is a real organization...so I don't really need any advice from a Yankee with a pretend law man's title! & thanks for your input on the Yankee " Marshal "

I like the 10mm, you do have to be selective of your ammo choices. I have seen ammo on gun store shelves with the same weight bullet in 10mm and 40 S&W and the 40 S&W was advertised as just a bit faster. Maybe 20 fps for example. For normal auto loaders, the 10mm is a harder hitting round than the other choices. Revolvers chamber much more powerful rounds than any auto loader. Yes I know about 50AE and 429DE , not the same as 500 S&W mag and 460 S&W.

It's still a free country, people should carry what you want to carry. After all it is your behind on the line. I admit I find the YM annoying, but sometimes he is right, sometimes not. At heart I am a revolver person, but due to health semi autos are just much lighter to carry. Plus add that I don't expect trouble, or go places where there might be trouble. A handgun is just like a fire extinguisher, there just in case.
