Love the tips, especially the one about adding a little new oil to pump out all the used oil. Besides the oil are there any additives that should be used.

We dont use any additives in our engine oil. although a bit of injector cleaner now and then in the diesel does not hurt. When I used to do a bit of racing we used some oil additive called Slick 50 It was good at protecting bearings and shells from wear. Sail Safe mate. Ant & Cid

Great video! Can you talk more about the "Engine Condensation" issue? As sailors, we use our engines infrequently. Thanks!

The things to remember with Diesels, is they love to be worked with a load, and worked Regularly. Just using them at tickover + a bit to charge batteries, can rapidly have bad consequences for them, particularly if they aren't going to get used much due to having say lots of solar power and a large house battery Bank. so for my inboard diesel while in passage, I have a routine that gets me into a routine that becomes a habit bit with changed timing if in an anchorage to avoid waking up neighbouring boats early, On Passage, for the first night watch just as it's getting dark (Tea Time) I furl in the Sails while warming up the engine at tickover, once Sails furled into forward gear and set the rpm at 1700 rpm for decent torque and very economic Fuel Consumption, and about 6 knots with the right orop and put on auto pilot to get Evening Meal on the go with an induction Hob powered by an inverter (formerly a Toasted sandwich maker or Slow cooker on Max Heat of something precooked on the gas hob ready earlier ( next boat gets the induction hob) Water is also being heated up via the Heat exchanger for a shower if anyone wants one) Last night watch before the Sun Comes up, same setup for breakfast- I like a Fruit juice first, say with a Fry up/ toast, then kettle on for Tea/coffee. Hot showers available twice a day, can run a Mini Washing Machine lots of Gas saved, plus when lots of juice going into the Batteries from Solar Panels, can run WatermakerWashing Machine/ Induction Hob for Lunch, so with the engine getting run up to temperature under load twice a day, engine plus gearbox are getting the work they need to keeping tip top condition, plus the batteries should be kept in the safe zone of long life above a 50% state of Charge. Me, I use Manufacturers Servicing recommendations as Maximums, only to be approached in emergencies. Lube plus filters inside recommended periods, and definitely for water pump impellers. Those impeller blades break off, and things have definitely become serious. If the engine is Turbocharged, only the best Turbo oil, tickover for at least 30 seconds before revving, to make sure the oil has made it to the Turbo Bearings, Tickover for at least 30 seconds before switching off, to keep oil flowing to those bearings while the Turbine spins down from what can be extremely high rpm. I have literally Never had a Turbo Fail on me as a result of following that procedure. I use a cheap thin Flushing Oil (Hydraulic Oil even) to Flush out engines (never running them while flushing obviously ) and Saildrives - particularly the Cone Transmission Yanmar Saildrive legs, ZF Disc Transmission legs are much better, and more like the Volvo leg, but only available for Yanmar engines (I really like Yanmar Diesels, never had a problem with them yet) 80hp and avove, so below that hp, get flushing, and flushing regularly. I personally would not touch even the ZF 360 degree rotating leg, for crossing Oceans with. Seems a daft idea to me tbh. Not that I would personally abuse equipment that way, or recommend anyone abuse equipment that way, the amount of abuse I have seen a poor Volvo Saildrive take was truly horrific. One clearly hadn't had a service forv21 tears, the leg to Hull Seals never changed in that time, Drive leg seals gone Engine components like exhaust and heat exchanger shot, new owner replaced everything, flushed everything, then full service, and that little beauty came back to life . .if treated like a new engine, oils and filters etc changed at 3 months, then 6 months, then annually at haulout, with a careful eye on things for that first year, it should have become close to as good as a new setup imho. I meandered a bit off there sorry, but there's just something about Diesels and I love the character of the things lol. Best Wishes and Fair Winds. Bob. 👍⛵️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️

This is a great video. Thank you for putting this together. I have a few questions. 1) I don't see the links to all of the tools. I checked out your web page (which is very nice) but I don't see the tools there either. 2) What oil did you use? 3) How much oil is needed?

Sorry, I forgot. I'm in the UK at the moment I will try to get on line and sort it out and also put a link in the description. We use Shell Helix, The grade and quantity are in the manual. You can download this for free. I think it was around 3.5 ltrs of 15w40 But please check. Sail Safe mate. Ant & Cid
