Changing my impeller for the first time today. It was nice to see it done by you, before attempting it myself. I was also glad to see you had a camera stand instead of trying to work with one hand; that's annoying! All in all, it seems pretty straight forward. Thanks for posting.

Great video Wayne.A small tip, to make it easier for anyone replacing the new impeller and trying to orientate the vanes, is to tie a cable tie around the vanes and orientate them in the desired direction while tightening the tie.The impeller can then be replaced onto the shaft and keyway easier and the cable tie snipped off before it is seated fully. Cheers.

Thanks for putting this out here. Doing my spring maintenance tomorrow. Have to say this is much easier and quicker than my old boat. I might even get the fuel filter done too.

Hi Michael, Try taking a look at the exhaust mixing elbow on the Yanmar. It is where the exhaust hose connects to the engine. There is also a smaller water hose that connects near the top of the elbow. This is where the water and hose exhaust gases meet. Start by taking off the water hose and see if the connecting point on the elbow is full of black gunk. You can clean it by pushing the stuff either into the larger elbow or working it out with a screw driver. Long term the hole elbow needs to be replaced every 5-10 years. The larger exhaust and water mixing area rusts and closes up. The elbow is held on with 4 bolts. There is also a gasket. If you replace the elbow, spray the bolts with penetrating oil and let it sit before turning them. The elbow can be bought from any Yanmar dealer or probably ordered on line. Mine is probably due to be replaced again, but I'll wait for either smoking or low water flow. I think the cost wasn't cheap. Something like $150, but it is a part that wears over time. Good luck. Hope this helped. Also, if you goggle Sam L Morse forum you can search "mixing elbow" and find more info and maybe even see a picture of what the inside of my elbow looked like when I last replaced it. I posted it there.

Nice video - thanks! You can make an inexpensive impeller puller by taking a heat torch to a curved tip needle nose pliers. When tips are hot enough, bend them out slightly so they will be wide enough to grab the cylinder. That way you can avoid damaging the vanes. Courtesy of Nigel Calder Diesel engine book!

There is a tool. It's called an impeller puller. Makes the job easy for less than $100. I suggest scraping the old gasket off with a scraper instead of a screwdriver which can score the metal leading to leaks.

There’s a specific torque in the Yanmar Engine manual on the bolts on the backing plate with the paper gasket. They need to be torque evenly so it doesn’t leak. You just can’t use the German torque the good old good-n-tight.

David, Could very well be a faulty impeller. If you open it up and any of the blades have broken off, you need to find them. I have never had to do this but I am told they are found down stream at the heat exchanger. Also check if there maybe a water screener between the sea cock and the impeller that needs cleaned. Good luck and you are right it is a learning experience. One more thing, it could simply be that the thermostat needs replaced. If the impeller is in tact, check the thermostat next.

You can make your own gaskets. A good ideal is to have various types of gasket material on hand for emergency repair. along with belts and hoses, clamps and ect. Just tap the surface with material, with small ball peen hammer to get impression. and cut gasket.

I'm old a wood chisel works well for the gasket. I've never used it but it sounds reasonable.

Not sure why the coolant is diluted, but it is what I was told be a mechanic. As to how much to fill it, up to the top of the reservoir and a little in the overflow tank. You can start the engine and recheck refilling again if needed.

my pump lid has an o ring seal that last forever, well nearly ,i use Vaseline on the rim to seal it, one way to remove the impellor use 2 screwdrivers and no damage to blades, and use a cable tie when replacing the impellor to squeeze up the blades and it slots in easy

I'm Guessing you don't have any water heater hoses that run from the engine to the water heater with coolant? Otherwise there is a bunch of coolant that didn't get replaced...?

Thanks for this video! Would this be the same for a Yanmar 2G? I just bought a 27' 1979 Catalina that has an inboard Yanmar 2G. My first boat. And when I took it out last night the WC Temp light came on with a warning buzzer. Previous owner said it might be the water line to or from the engine. From what I have found online, it could also be a faulty impeller. Guess I am learning from day 1 about boat upkeep!

Be careful and don't over-tighten the fan belts because it puts too much stress on the bearings and they will fail. Just enough pressure to get past the squeaking noise you get with loose belts is just about right.

I'm very sorry to hear that. One of the only reasons living aboard isn't likely for me is because I'd be worried about my two birds... not so much from the motion of the boat but I would be concerned about fumes from cleaning compounds, etc., and keeping the temperature in the cabin somewhat stable.

Right, raw water. Confusing if boat is in freshwater. I tend to think as the fresh system as coolant

You have an impeller with a keyway...others have an impeller with a screw going thru the middle. How do I know without opening it up which impeller I have? Mine is a 2004 Yanmar 3GM30f (E) . I just bought the boat and want to order a new impeller...but which one?

Great - but I'm having trouble understanding how to drain the system of water. Yanmar's manual shows a drain plug but my engine doesn't seem to have that. It has a hole but it's obviously blocked off in someway...! Any advice? What should it actually look like? In your video, it's obscured by the socket arrangement your speak about
@where-in-the-world
@where-in-the-world 8 жыл бұрын
To drain the system, there should be a series of small drain valves on the engine. They screw in. Maybe somebody took yours out ant plugged them for some reason.
@DavidRea2710
@DavidRea2710 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks Wayne. I guess that's right. It's not calamitous - I guess I can drain the system by undoing one of the hoses near the pump. Great video and hope your 'inspector' is still tweeting!

The coolant and the water, salt or fresh are two different systems. Maybe the engine could be modified, don’t really know.
