Kinda funny how this appeared as suggested. I recently moved into a supervisor role at my company which requires moving loaded/unloaded trailers off our sort door and the part you say "3 spots down" actually helped me remember. It's been 6 years since I've backed up a trailer. Been running 26ft box and now I do trailers again. That little tidbit helped me this morning lol

53 and 20 ft are kinda difficult.. It’s more easier been a truck driver than a yard hostler..

I just started my Switicher training a few days ago, I'm maybe 3 hours into working the switcher. I can run the switcher just fine, but I still can't get the trailers on door (Takes me a few tries and I end up slightly angled). I've never driven anything like this before until now, it's a hell of an experience. Thanks for posting this and the 3 truck tip!

I started driving in June of this year, and there's been a time or two, where i dropped the trailer and had the yard dog dock the trailer. I'd rather be safe vs ok, I'll try it and next thing explain why i hit something. Not all places do that, but it doesn't hurt to ask. Yes, i practice G.O.A.L, but there's been times where I've refused to back a trailer due to how tight the area is, or how much crap they have lying around.

I have a job interview tomorrow for a yard jockey position. I drove a sleeper for 3 months and was unsure how to set up a yard dog when backing. I have a backing test. I’m going to try this set up. Wish me luck 🤞🏾

Once you get in the driver seat you'll pick up the backing quickly just takes patients and go slow. Use the G.o.a.l method.

I became a yard driver 4 days ago and I’m the only driver without a cdl. Will I pick up the pace soon ? Because I can only move about 4-5 trailers an hour and that’s including backfilling .

I became an Amazon yard driver back in April & started driving in May. In the beginning I took forever to move trailers. Now I can move about 10-15 an hour. You’ll get better/faster with time.

Is backing from shunter truck and semi truck the same

Nope. Shunted trucks steering is a lot better quicker and shorter on turns.

Hey . it depends on the company you’re gonna work for. I know a couple of companies that don’t need a CDL because they stay in the yard. But other companies do require you to have your CDL. And on overtime again it all depends on who you work for some. You only work eight hours some you might work a little bit more. Be safe good luck.

I was just doing a favor. Most companies starts from $16 up to $35 an hour . I do Intermodal and it’s a home daily account

Well I drove for 14 yrs and recently got on FedEx as a package handler. I just last Thursday took my drug test for the switcher position and I'll move from $18 to 23 hr. 😊
