Not too bad on the fence! I've been even luckier, though. A few years ago, the top of a pine located about 3' from a fence broke off and actually fell on the other side of the fence and a 12' wide chain-link gate. The base of the top was about 10" in dia, so it would have smashed something had it hit it. Then this summer, another tree next to the first, only about 5' from the fence fell over and landed inside the fence, again missing it. That tree was 14" at the base.

Sounds like an adventure. Probably want to drain your hose at least a little (and subsequently the hydrant head) in freezing weather so it doesn't explode again (even just loosening the hose connection a little will allow the riser to drain);but i guess you figured that out. You can put a quick disconnect on to make it easier to make connection/disconnection.
