One of my favorite things to grow are Yard Long Green Beans. They are very prolific and can grow in the HOT summer when most green beans won't. Check out the 2022 Harvest of Yard Long Green Beans. Here's my Associate Link to HOSS TOOLS: bit.ly/homesteadadvisor (These yard long beans are called "Orient Wonder" at Hoss Tools) Here are the Yard Long Bean seeds on Amazon: amzn.to/3yyZoIL alan Check out my Website. I've been growing them for at least 15 years. They are very prolific and tasty. Very different from green beans but still can be used in place of here and there. I personally do not like them canned, they get slimey and soft on the shelf to the point of inedible after a year. I freeze them and dehydrate them to preserve.

yeah you're definitely right on that if you let um get too leathery they're a little tough to eat I just went out and picked all the dry seed beans off of my trellis this afternoon man them beans really been tasty good this year mostly I've just been throwing mine in a few teaspoons of water and a chunk of butter pepper and salt and steaming them up tender with some diced up tomatoes man talking about about a flavor treat for green beans thou excellent 😘👌 .. most of my beans only got about 18 in long and less than a half inch around this year back an '05 that was the first time I grew um they got near 3/4 inches around and almost 6 ft long and still be pretty tender they grew so fast .. kind of freak my mom out when I came in the door with um swung over my shoulder like a big long tug boat rope 😅 I don't know exactly what has happened to my garden but it's a broken somehow hard to grow anything in it anymore despite all the amendments and additives I put in it I put lots of Ash eggshells compost turned under with Green manure and the pH is hitting its mark and I'm all organic so I'm not sure ? I guess some of it's to do with the weather ?

I'm from Asia and enjoy your video. Anyways, we don't call that yardlong beans, it's green and bigger (fatter) than the yarlong beans. We call that asparagus beans. They are longer than yarlong beans. They grow more than thirty inches long, whereas the yardlong beans is only about twenty four inches at the most. This asparagus beans is sweeter than the yardlong beans. I plant it every year and can't never be wrong. They love hot weather here in the south, Tennessee is one of them although they trhive in northern states but shorter growing season. My last harvest is the middle of September if my goats didn't munch them, maybe I'm still harvesting them. ;(

I was considering these beans. But, the truth is, I'm done with growing stuff just because "it will grow here"! 😆Now, with that being said. You have used the earth boxes for a long time, do you need to stick with the grow chart, or can you sow, like green-beans a little thicker than they say?
@BIGALTX
@BIGALTX 2 жыл бұрын
I usually go with the chart because they've researched it so well But... I suppose you could just sow the top with beans or peas (like a wide row) It would be worth a try 👍😎

I took your suggestion and grew yard long beans for the first time this year. They turned out well and I will grow them again next year. I decided to get adventurous and to order from Kitazawa Seeds. I got variety "You Fong Wong" because it sounded like an evil do-er on the Green Hornet and also variety "Kurosanjaku" because that sounded like a good sumo wrestler. I like to have an adventure in my veg garden (preferable not involving snakes). Anyway, they both turned out to be delightful with the Kuro... being really great in stir fries. If anyone has canned these up I'd like to hear how they did. They are very good, but a bit different from a regular green bean (just a bit). I'm wondering how they would do as dilly beans? Thanks for the tip and good luck with your fall gardens.

These are actually a type of cowpea. If you look at the leaves you can see the resemblance. They are fine stir fried but not the best as traditional green beans.

We do freeze them, but I don’t think we’ve ever stirfried them after freezing. But I think they would work just fine if regular green beans do well after frozen.

Yep, they do taste a little bit different than a traditional green bean. But if you sauté them or stirfry them they’re really good that way. Probably the way they are intended to be cooked.

So if I shell the ones that are too big ..will they dry so I can save the seeds or do I just need to let them dry on the vine and feed the big ones that I already picked to the chickens
@tambrasmith9707
@tambrasmith9707 Жыл бұрын
Or have u eaten any that u shelled
@BIGALTX
@BIGALTX Жыл бұрын
You can do either one. Sometimes I let them dry on the vine, sometimes I’ll let them dry in the barn after I pick them. But make sure they get big and fully formed. They will be kind of rubbery.

@BIGALTX

In my experience... the yard long beans LOVE the heat. So, plant them now. I haven't even planted MINE yet. Hope to do that tomorrow. But... don't plant them deep. They need to be planted only about 1/4" deep.

They grow in Austin in the heat of summer even in a side yard with partial shade. I stopped planting as I felt their taste wasn't exceptional, they lost their crunch if even slightly over ripe, and they had a pungent taste overall!
