Truck tarps are the best. Used one for ten years to keep my wooden tent floor over the winter. Campground in denmark. Storms, uv light (sun) and snow...no problem.

Those old Evinrudes and Johnsons were something else. You never knew if it would start so you could leave the dock or start after fishing a favorite spot so you could get back. I remember my dad never left without having enough rope to use in case we need to get towed back in, but boy those were great memories for a kid growing up in the 60s. Thanks Mustie!!

Hey Mustie. Those old OMC outboards are notorious for cracked coils. They might run enough to get you a mile from the dock and then fail once they are warmed up. There is an inspection plate on top the flywheel (also access for setting points without removing the flywheel) check for cracked coils. Replace the coils (if cracked), clean the carb, set the points replace the impeller and gear oil in the lower unit and those old OMC,s are very reliable cheap outboards. Consider that a new 10hp today costs about $2600.

About a good tarp, if you can find a local billboard company who use the tarp style stretched billboard, they throw out the old ones after a while. I have one over my boat that is over ten years old and the only problem is that it has stiffened up over time. Those sign tarps work great!

Back when I was in high school in the early '70s a friend of mine bought a 14' plywood ski boat with a 12 hp Monkey Wards Sea King motor. Every time we went out something would break on it so he would keep a set of paddles aboard to get back in. I remember we found an old Evinrude from about the same year and a lot of the parts would interchange since they were both made by OMC. A tent supply company in your area should be able to make anything you need. Most have a wide variety of materials to choose from and they could point you in the right direction for the durability you need.

Good score on the 10HP outboard & pressure tank !! 7-1/2 and differ with carb size and lower unit gear ratio.. Pull the flywheel and check both coils, the older ones crack and leak voltage after sitting for so long. Short money from Sierra for a new pair. Have a good weekend brother !!

a little story...I broke the rear window out on my van, and needed to close it up against the elements. I stuck Crash Wrap on the window. Of course, it rotted away in the Georgia sunlight...just as your tarps have done, in the sun. I became disabled & really couldn't go outside & mess around with the darn crash wrap, so I figured I would just coat it with something to hold back the rot for a while until I could get to it. I used Rustoluem Truck Bed Spray. That was three years ago, and it is still like new. It has worked so well that I am not considering replacing the window at all...I will just re-install the Rustoluem-coated crash wrap with a fitted piece of yard sale dog-cage underneath to keep out snatch 'n' grabbers and continue on. It worked. Bonus is that having the opaque window reduces the interior heat by 20% or so. I suggest purchasing a tarp at Harbor Freight and coating it with the Truck Bed Spray; do not spend a hundred dollars...you don't have to.

On tarps. Not that easy to find, but sometimes old (free) swimming pool liners are awesome. They're heavy, ugly as sin, and you'll need to add grommets, but the decent ones last a long time.

I think you are on the right track with a tractor trailer tarp. I have one we found on the side of the highway and it is really heavy duty. It's also really heavy so may not be the easiest thing to get on the camper. I've been looking at a few tarps on amazon trying to find the thickest mil I can. If I find a good one I'll let you know.

I have an 18hp evinrude/johnson of the same era. I bought it non-running for around $100 I think, I must be a sucker. Anyways, I got it running but it wouldn't reach the 18-22mph it should have on my 14ft boat. It only ran about 14mph. After talking with some people on AOMCI forum they said the motor had probably been hot and had scored cylinders. The easiest way to see the sides of the pistons, and a little bit of the cylinders is to pull the transfer port covers (opposite side from the exhaust cover). I pulled that cover and sure enough the pistons were in rough shape. I bought another powerhead off ebay, the seller said it had, I believe 120PSi of compression. That ebay powerhead actually ended up being in the same condition compression and performance wise as my original. An AOMCI member offered to sell me a "known good" powerhead. I bought it, and the motor now pushes my boat 21mph. When these motors get hot, the pistons swell and stick in the cylinders. The cylinders have cast iron sleeves so a lot of the time you get lucky and only the pistons will be damaged. If you are on a budget you can sand the roughness of the piston skirt a bit, re-ring them and rerun them. The moral of my story is, these motors can seem to be in good shape, good comrpession etc, but not be running quite 100%. I also found the cranks to be fairly worn in the two powerheads I tore down. One of them had a leaking crank seal at the top. The bottom crank seal is a carbon style seal.

Saw a comment on the outboard motors. My uncle used to be a hunter fisherman guide in Northern Wisconsin. Any work he did on the outboard motors involved a 50 gallon drum and immersing the motor in the drum. I have similar issues with oxidation on plastic tarps. Owned a canvas tarp that lasted years. don't know where you'd get one.

Canvas Tarp, but go double grade, and your on the money get marine grade eyelets or zips, that will protect you from decomposing, double stitching at least on all seems. then spray with scotch guard. I have had all my tents and camper trailers made this way and never a problem. Oh, rub all the stitches down with soft bees wax and they will never let you down.

We had a sign company here in Louisville Kentucky that made vinyl billboards for the huge signs along the interstate and they would almost give you the old vinyl when they took them down and replaced the ad for either another company or for age reasons, but they work great for covering things up. I did have a friend that worked for Nagele sign company but he has since retired so that dried up that source. you could try the local billboard companies. Incidentally, I had a friend to bring me the blue canvas from the awnings at the restaurants at Churchill Downs here in Louisville Kentucky! They’re not super big but the history is pretty cool. Years ago I got two 8.25x20 tires that I put on the front of my old single axle Dodge dump truck and the history on the tires were they came off of the gate at Churchill Downs that they roll back when they start the races! They had red paint dots on them where I guess the gate had been painted or the posts or something, but still had the nubs all over the tires! How cool was that!? They had tiny amounts of whether checking but not enough to worry about. I ran them until they were bald! Ha ha!

I do hope you found a good tarp for the caravan.. The ones we get here in Australia, from experience, last a good 2 years in year round full sun before they begin to seep water through, they aren't cheap though! Lol... and last a good 5 years before you need a new one. One thought is something I learnt from a sailor. Paint the tarp with a water based(acrylic) house paint. White is best, it reflects heat and keeps the tarp longer. The water based acrylic paint generally remains flexible(you may know that already). It may work with canvas too, unless it's oiled canvas... lol

If you want a good tarp, hit a farm supply store (like an Agway, Tempco, or one of the true farm stores) and get one of the canvas tarps sold for covering hay wagons or farm equipment. Or get a hold of the place Mr. Peek used for his seats. Good oiled canvas will last a LONG time if you don't store it damp. I have a couple, Once they are folded up dry and tight I put them in a steel garbage can to keep mickey from thinking they are lunch.

Hey Mustie, it's normally the UV from the sun that causes tarps to drop apart. Not sure what is available your side of the world but you can usually get tarps that have a UV resistant coating on them to extend their life. The cheaper tarps are made from PE (Polyethylene) but the more industrial type stuff is made from PVC, the thicker 500gsm+ hemmed stuff is quite strong and what i'd look into. just make sure it has a UV resistant coating on it you should find it lasts for quite a while. As for the eyelets, it's common to do but they are not designed to be the main fixing points of the tarp. Even the heavyduty hemmed thick pvc sheets will suffer eyelet damage if they are the sole mounting points. Throw some rope over the vehicle to secure the tarp and use looser bungees on the eyelets. This will spread the stress of the wind over a larger area of tarp and take a lot of stress out the eyelets. One final suggestion is that if something has decent paintwork then a clean cotton bedsheet etc between the tarp and the paint can help prevent damage from the eyelets and any colour transfer from the sheet to the vehicle. Hope that helps a little.
@n2n8sda

Good point abut them being able to rub the bodywork. I always have bungee hooks coming away at a 45 degree angle so it doesnt happen. Buy by loose I mean not flapping around loose but not tearing the eye-lets out.. bit of stretch left in them.. hard to explain! Thank for the reply anyway if somebody did them loose against the bodywork they could cause damage

Comment about making hold downs in a sheet without grommets. Its simple, a small stone or hunk of wood on the inner side of the cloth and you ca tie a knot around it on the outside. The other end of the line you can tie a loop for bungies or just tie it down to the bottom frame. Thanks for the cool videos.

Scored on the Evinrude! I really look forward to seeing that come back to life! I have a 1949 -50 5 hp Johnson TN I look forward to redoing someday! It ran perfect until it sat with the new gas for one winter. :-( A for the tarp; I got only two years out of the "silver" Tractors Supply store tarp for my antique 21' Penn Yan boat. It was supposed to be the top dollar cover as I recall. So I too would love a recommendation on a good longer lasting tarp/cover. From your neighbor down the street I say keep up these videos, I love each and everyone!

Check out AAA Sling in Grand Rapids or Kalamazoo tent and awning, in Kalamazoo. I'm sure you already figured out, Michigan. I think, both online. Thanks for a great vid, Cliff

You can never have too many belts and pulleys. I once checked a book out from the library and t was all about collecting old outboards with a lot of real oldies. They are cool motors. The last thing I need is another hobby but it keeps gnawing at me.
