When my brother and I were kids in the mid to late 60's our Dad had a 1957 10hp Evinrude outboard. We would go bream fishing in different area lakes and that motor never let us down. I often think of those days and that motor.Good memories.

Why do we like your videos?. It is because of your narration, it seems as if you are talking personally to everyone who watches. And you make the subject matter so addictive.

I agree. The best teachers are ones that pull you into what they are doing physically and what they are talking about. The subject matter of this channel is outstanding. I am always learning new things here. Plus I now keep my eye open for them FREE piles lol.

dude that engine is one hell of a find. I had a nearly identical Johnson seahorse 1956 7.5 hp. two cylinder 2 cycle and that thing kicked ass it was an amazing engine, they have a heavy flywheel so they can idle down lower than any modern engine. it was literally unreal how low I could idle that engine. I've seen all kinds of Outboards throughout my life and there is nothing like those 1950s Evinrude Johnson Motors they were phenomenal.

Another good video. I grew up in NW Florida and used to buy and sell boat engines. One I bought was about a 1955 Fastwin 15 HP if I remember correctly. I like the points plate/throttle cam assembly of the old Johnson/Evinrude engines. Also, because the older engines used the pressurized tanks, I usually installed diaphragm style fuel pumps.

I'm only 24, but when I was a kid, when my grandpa was alive we ran one of these exact 10hp Evinrudes on the trott line checker boat. We had one of these and an old Johnson on another small boat for the same thing. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I haven't thought about that since I was probably in my teens.

My dad had the 15HP version of that same exact engine from 1960 through the late 1990s. You can't imagine the number of hours on it. It started first pull every time even after sitting for a year or more. We had to replace the coils once, a shear pin and the clutch dog in all that time. It was super quiet and idled like a dream. Great engine! Water should be coming out of the exhaust if the pump is working.
@newjerseybill35217 жыл бұрын
We had a 1953 Evinrude 5HP outboard. The thing ran forever. its final demise was the housing between the power head and the lower unit actually wore out where it would swivel against the stern bracket. We would run that engine well into winter months. Just prime the heck out of it with the slow speed jet / primer knob on the side so you had a nice fuel sheen around the boat and first pull, every time!!!! Those old OMC,s where great engines. I always loved the people that loved their Evinrudes, but hated Johnsons!!! hehe

@delmontindustriesltd75017 жыл бұрын
Cool find! Yep. a new impeller is in order. Even after sitting for 5 years the impeller should be replaced. The outlet on these old motors is the large hole on the back of the exhaust housing. The little hole on the side is overflow I think. Also I would check and or change the gear oil. Working on these old motors for the past 4 summers, I have seen many motors that have water in the gearcase. I love working on these old girls though. Very simple and they usually fire right up! Just make sure you run the carb dry of fuel after you are done.

Nice find! My cousin has a '56 7.5 Fleetwin, that was the little brother to your engine. I went over it for him several years ago. As I think someone has mentioned, the powerhead most likely needs to be removed in order to drop the lower unit. May also want to do a compression check to be sure the head gasket hasn't blown. These motors don't have a great track record for head gaskets, especially if they overheat, but not a big deal to fix if the gasket had blown. Evinrude (Bombardier) surprisingly still offers allot of parts for these engines. Another source I used was a company called Vintage Outboard. It's a 1 man show, but the guy has allot of parts for older stuff, at reasonable prices.
@Zeemike17 жыл бұрын
Don't be surprised that people find it interesting. This kind of thing appeals to a lot of people like me, who made a living off of doing something similar, but with appliances not small engines and VWs. It is great to see how another trade troubleshoots and fixes things.

I had the use of one of those as a kid and "white gas", the grownups called it, and motor oil was the fuel that was used. I had no idea what any of that meant then. I know that I had a blast as an 8 year old tooling around a small section of the upper Mississippi river catching turtles. Good memories seeing that engine. Impeller's gone....
@drunknpossum7 жыл бұрын
Two things I can say with what you said in this video. 1: is the oil mix 25:1 was using the old school SAE 30 oil, you can use the newer 50:1 with that engine no problem.. The other is the water pump, they where never made to suck up water. The plate you keep pointing on the side of the lower unit is the last chance inlet.. The main water feed is a tube running up the side of the exhaust outlet. the water pump needs to be under water to start pumping. The impeller is bad at the least of it... Good fine on it...
@golfman92907 жыл бұрын
Hope we get to see you replace that impeller pump. I've seen very little of the internals of outboards so would find it interesting,cheers.

Fur Face And you gotta buck A headwind to get back to shore! When I was A 16 year old (I'm 65 now) I went to A cabin with my best friend's family for A week. We went fishing with the old man and going across the lake he hit A rock and busted the lower unit off his 125 horse Mercury. Headwind all the way back and one paddle! The puny Minnkota electric couldn't hope to pull that fiberglass tub home in that wind! Luckily A couple of guys were camping on an island for the summer and came out to tow us back to the resort. The old man gave them 50 buck's for their trouble and they went to the resort store and bought 6 case's of beer!
