Our 5 yr old mast appeared to have water ingress at the base that caused a soft spot.Down it went.A lumpy sea and 20knts.It was a great sail til that point ! The guys were amazing .To see the boat hammering towards us at speed is a sight we will not forget. Not only did they pick us up but they saved the boat and sails taking time to get the 40ft rig in.Not a mark on the sails.20yrs at sea and it happened ! In sailing terms if it can it will and it did ! Thankfully we have the RNLI .Outstanding.

Next time I would carry a pair of bolt cutters or portable disc cutter (better) to cut stays. The mast slamming around could hole your hull !

Bolt cutters do not cut cable all the way through, you need cable cutters, disk cutters need a power source, not always available in an emergency but you sure are right about the mast holing the hull.

Buck0338 battery powered disc cutters work at sea too.

I'm amazed you even rescued the mast! Standard procedure would have been to cut it off ...

Well don RNLI ..! Why did you not cut the mast free ? so it it didn't pound the boat to bits ?? If you had been out of lifeboat cover, it could have cost you your lives ...🤔

regular inspections would have prevented this. in any case this doesnt warrant rescue or pan pan calls. simply disconnect the stays as the swell takes the slack off, lash the mast on deck, then motor in. around yarmouth just wait 3 hours and the tide will bring you back in unaided

The seas are not the bad. They could have either cut the stays and shrouds and let the mast sink or put in the the deck before it holed the hull. They did neither, they should be knitting instead of sailing.
