I'm glad to hear it softens over time. I've shyed away from RH for years because I didn't care for the roughness. I will give it a try.

@Monica Walker - I have found that it depends on the color as to how rough it is. The reds are softer than the yellows, in my opinion. So since I'm making items for layettes for newborns, I tend to go with the softer feeling colors and avoid the rougher ones. Since I'm fairly new to crocheting, I learned this by touching each and every color to see which ones met my 'standards'. I have also found that they soften up greatly when washed. However I don't use fabric softener as I'm making these for unknown babies that might have a sensitivity to chemicals, I also use All free and clear detergent for the wash for the same reason.

Excellent review. I use RHSS exclusively for my different amigurumi projects and I am always thrilled with the results. As you stated the stiffness of the yarn is wonderful for that category of crochet. I've never been disappointed in one of my projects produced using RHSS Solids. Thank you for this review as I was not aware of the other yarns in the RHSS Family. I'll be checking them out soon!

I love Red Heart Super Saver, it’s what I learned to crochet with. If I’m making something to give as a gift I usually make it out of RHSS bc it won’t require a lot of special care for washing and drying.

Gracias.
@Yaotzin07815 жыл бұрын
@Yaotzin07815 жыл бұрын

Red Heart is my go to yarn! Thanks so very much for this review! I'm very excited about the Ombre! I crochet prayer shawls and the Ombre yarn will be perfect! I haven't seen it in the big box store I have in my town (there's only 1 side of 1 aisle that has maybe 3/4 of it with yarn). I'll ask the Dept Manager if she can order it in!!!

I use I use a lot of super sour yarn. That’s because I know that after washing and drying with the dryer sheet, my item will be soft and squishy, I love the bright colors, and I will say that super saver has gotten a lot softer over the years. If you want red heart soft before washing try with Lobe, which is an excellent choice.

I love Super Saver! I have certainly found funky lumps though. How do I work around these?
@mooglyblog5 жыл бұрын
Ah, it can indeed happen to any yarn. I usually cut them out and weave in the ends as if I were starting a new skein. The exception is when the lumpy or tied bit is going to be on the inside of something that won't be seen or worn - like the bottom of a basket. Then I might cheat and leave it if it's hidden. ;)
@MeliPixie5 жыл бұрын
@@mooglyblog I see! You mention a new skein and weaving ends... That is new to me. I always tie a very tight and small knot and hide it in the back. Is that incorrect???

Why does Bernat say to use a 5 mm hook but Red Heart says to use a 6.5 mm hook when its the same size 4 medium worsted yarn. Its confusing as a newbie, so what size hook should I use? I find the larger hooks heavy but also want to make progress on my projects. See and the white one you showed said 5.5 mm hook. Please help??
@mooglyblog5 жыл бұрын
I get it, it can be very confusing! The thing is, that within any of those size numbers, there is an acceptable range of thicknesses. Then, depending on what fibers the yarn is made of and how they are spun/plied, they will work up differently. And on top of all that, the recommended hook size will change depending on the type of pattern you are making - for instance, a basket will have a much tighter fabric than a drapey soft sweater. You could use the same yarn to make both, but will need two very different hook sizes. Finally, if you're crocheting something that needs to be a particular size like a sweater or hat, then you need to look at the designer's listed gauge and use whatever hook size gives you that gauge - the recommended hook there is just what they used, and a good "starting point" for the crocheter. I hope that helps! Congrats on learning to crochet! I know there are a lot of factors and info and it can seem overwhelming, but if you take it one project and technique at a time I know you can make anything you set your mind to!

@@mooglyblog I am making single crochet scarves in rows. So would an 5 mm or a 6 mm be better?
@alycewich44723 жыл бұрын
@@tamaraj4200 -- I'm fairly new to crochet also. In my opinion, I would use which ever hook you find more comfortable to use. I prefer the 5.5 mm for my projects (baby beanies). However, I have one pattern for baby beanies that uses anywhere from a 4 mm to a 6mm depending on what the finished size will be (4mm will be smaller/premie size 6mm for a 3 month old baby or 10+ pound baby). What I found with that pattern was, yes, you could use each and every size hook, but the smaller the hook, the harder it was for me to keep the #4 weight yarn on the hook. Another thought is that the bigger the hook the bigger the spaces between the stitches so it could work up faster. Go ahead and try both sizes and see which one you like best. When I first started I was worried that I HAD to have the exact right size hook, it doesn't quite work like that, especially when you are making scarves. There's really no specific way you have to do it, just do it. Unless the other person has more experience with crocheting, they're not going to even notice. They'll be to enamored that you were able to do something so beautiful.

Thank you for your helpful review! really helped a lot, but I wanted to ask about the softness of this yarn, because I live in a not very cold place but I want to make a blanket with this yarn so I've been searching and looking for the yarn that wouldn't feel so rough, so would you recommend it?
@mooglyblog4 жыл бұрын
Super Saver does have a reputation for being a bit scratchy. I was once told by a Red Heart employee that that is because when it debuted, they wanted to give the feel of wool in an acrylic - and that's what wool yarn felt like back then! BUT with washing and drying (and maybe a touch of fabric softener in a wash or two), it does soften up! People love it or hate it - a very divisive yarn!
