You explain so well. I am about to knit again after many years and find myself with so many questions. I have found a good substitute yarn for a cowl pattern and the only part that I needed an explanation on was the number of plies. Both types of wool are chunky and a pretty good match. One is one ply and the one I want to buy is 3-ply. I believe that the 3-ply will work on the pattern. Gauge stated on the label is pretty much the same also. Thank you so much for what you do.

I’m so glad you’ve got your answer. Yes, substituting a single ply for a 3 ply will work well, but not the other way around. You’ll get more stitch definition with a 3ply, so if you were swapping the other way you’d lose that. You can get going now - happy knitting! 🧶

Wonderful video! Thank you! It’s hard to find information about this. Could you do a video about the different fibers and how they knit up? I just found out that cotton has more stitch definition than other yarns.

Hi😊 what if i crochet 5ply and checkered with 4ply, will it turn out wrong or just fine? The color i wanted doesnt come with 5ply so i dont know what to do. Can you help me or suggest whats beter?

Hi, I'm by no means an expert in crochet, so it'll likely be better for you to ask a crocheter, as I've not heard of anything other than the checker pattern that looks like squares alternating between two colours. If that's it, then you may notice the yarn thickness difference. I have crocheted in the past with a mix of yarn weights and it's turned out fine. It does tend to be more noticeable in knitting, but that's just my experience as someone who hasn't crocheted much! It really does depend on the intention for the project too. - is it for a University final exam, or a blanket to throw on the back of the sofa?!

Worsted can refer to thickness of wool and can also be about the processing method - how the yarn is carded, or combed, before spinning. Happy knitting 🧶

@@KnitWithHannah there's a typo. It should say unlpyed yarn. So, to ply is fold back on itself. When making yarn one plies by twisting two or more singles in the opposite direction. A singled yarn was never plied.

@@lynrenshaw1746 I'm not sure there is a "best" yarn for baby knits. It's a matter of opinion. I personally would go for cottons, linens, silks, bamboo, or fine wools. Babies put everything in their mouth and I don't trust acrylics to be very safe.
