If you’re in the US or Canada, I definitely suggest looking into knitpicks yarns. Their acrylic yarns are some of the softest I’ve found and their plant fiber yarns are affordable and high quality. They’re also almost always running a sale on something, whether it be certain yarns or tools.
@masuganut20822 жыл бұрын
If you live in America then sign up for premier brand emails and you will get notifications of sales. They always have free shipping over a certain amount (which they lower at certain times of the year) They do lots of sales. I don’t pay more than 50 cents an ounce for acrylic Also you can go in on an order with someone too ❤️

Online, check out Ice yarns closeout section - they are based in Turkey and have a lot of yarns that are natural fiber blended with acrylic, which brings the price down, and their closeout section sometimes has killer deals - for example they have their winter colors of their 50/50 wool/acrylic worsted at $1.75 for 100g/150m right now I also recommend hitting up the thrift stores. Check if your area has an art/craft supply exchange or a crafters swap meet (or organize one if there isn't one yet! Everyone meets up to swap their stashes). Overstock stores like Big Lots sometimes have yarn as well.

I’m actually excited about this! I don’t get the expensive price of these yarns. I got their tape yarn in a kit to crochet a bag a year or two ago and was really disappointed by the pattern and the yarn. I hated working with this yarn, and the bag ended up super heavy and unusable. I know they’re really popular amongst younger trendy knitters because they make that super bulky yarn, but oh god the price. I could always find great equivalents for much cheaper. They have amazing colors tho, for someone like me who loves bright colored yarn, it’s hard to find good dupes.

I think a lot of the attraction of WATG is their aesthetic - it appeals past the yarn itself - the font, the logo, the packaging, the social media. I do feel that is where this brand appeals - but probably not to somebody like me who just doesn't feel that they can justify the price. Some of your swatches were a delight to look at. Thanks for these videos you save us crafters ££!

I liked several of the yarns, and appreciate that this company works to make their yarn more environmentally safe (and yes, this costs money, I get that) but have been an avid knitter for years and I know my yarn. This yarn, like you mentioned on quite a few of them, were very nice yarns, but can also be found at equal quality for a much, much better price, even from high end yarn companies. There was nothing so unique or special about them that I couldn’t easily substitute a less expensive/same quality/same fiber yarn for. For this reason, I wouldn’t purchase their yarns. I tend to make sweaters and socks…the sweaters especially are a big time and money investment for a quality merino, for example, and when I’m buying a sweater quantity of yarn, spending 20 to 25% more becomes a very significant price difference, for essentially the same product. That being said, I wanted to thank you for your great and honest reviews, and all of your videos that I enjoy watching. You may say, “you said you were a knitter, I’m a crochet channel,” and that’s true. I do know how to crochet, but prefer knitting, to each their own. But, I still love to see what can be made, and reviews on yarn. Also, I have never done Tunisian crochet…and you have me sold on it. I’m going to get some hooks and give it a try. I absolutely love how the Tunisian stitches look, as well as the fabric they produce…looking forward to learning something new! Thanks, Toni!

Don't feel bad about being a knitter enjoying crochet videos. I'm a crocheter who loves the Fruity Knitting podcast. I've learned so much about fiber, garment construction, design, and fiber careers and resources. They also feature crochet designers occasionally. We can all learn from each other.

@@kayjeanne8346 Absolutely!!! I do crochet a few things from time to time (no matter what hooks I use, it gives me tendinitis in my forearm) but prefer knitting. It think being a yarn enthusiast is perhaps a better term for watching videos doing a craft you don’t always do! You are so correct in the importance of learning about the fiber construction, how the yarn will work up, last, lay and hang. How to substitute yarns and understand how to do this well. How to know how to pick yarns that will work for different projects, and, like great reviews from Toni, just how good or bad the yarn is. Toni also gives me tons of ideas for how to put colors together. She has such a great sense for color combinations (I have no skills in this area) and she comes up with beautiful combinations that I never would have considered! Thanks, Toni!! i have never understood selling/using roving as-is to make projects, ESPECIALLY at chunky weights like that. there are some single-ply yarns that i enjoy, but they're all fingering weight (which makes the loose fibers less susceptible to extreme wear). anything larger just gets downright gross almost immediately. especially for that price point! like, we're really charging people THAT much to make a project that will look like it's 65 years old and insect damaged after a single use??

It’s fun to use and satisfying to make your own straw summer bag. I bought some black raffia from Michael’s party section and I had to buy 4 spools to get enough yardage for a small bag. They spools are about $7 each at Michaels but you can use your Michaels coupon to save some $. It comes to a similar cost but the upside of WATG is that they supply you with a pattern when you buy a kit. However yes, as someone else mentioned, you’re spending at the very least $30 to make a bag you could purchase from the thrift store for $5 (or target for about $10-15). 🤷🏼♀️

Toni - what would you recommend in place of the Crazy Sexy Wool? I just bought several skeins to use for my first ever sweater 😭 HALP.

I used to love going to there website but got extremely turned off because they are mainly knitting patterns. The crochet patterns are very limited (usual beanie and nothing very updated). I always wondered about there cotton yarn. Thank you for your HONESTY!!!

Tony I am so glad that you review yarn but Wool and the Gang are prohibitively expensive for the average crocheter. I do well for myself but I wouldn’t put that much money out unless it was for a gift for someone that I really cared about!

Love your channel! Agree with you on Crazy Sexy Wool! Sooo excited to get it but the fact that it gets fuzzy and pill-y not just after the project but as you work was very disappointing. What are your suggestions for alternative yarns that give the same vibe? ;)

A friend of mine calls all the yarns from W&theGang just "Instagram-Wool", because it looks fabolous but just for pictures. Can´t really wear most of them as they tend to end up not so pretty really soon, according to her, and she tried quite some of their yarns. And that makes those prices even more crazy in my opinion.

Recycling is great however companies should not be charging premium prices for what is essentially repurposed garbage.

I love these reviews! Thanks for taking the time! I just bought a pattern that recommends the crazy sexy wool. What you recommend as a more affordable alternative?

Now I’m curious, what’s your favorite yarn? Merino wool, acrylic (I’m sorry), mohair, etc. I want to know what you recommend!

I knit socks with their yarn for years. Very interesting unusual pattern emerge (if stitch count is correct). Use wool setting machine laundry. For men socks prefer Schaffenmayr Pairfect because of huge color/pattern selection. Price reflects quality.

Thanks for the video! What yarn would you recommend as a substitute for the Crazy Sexy Wool?

I got Billie Jean from my local yarn store as it's only recycled yarn. I twas the first time I had used a yarn with recycled fibers and a luxe yarn and I couldn't get over the drape. I'm not a crochet person at all. I always mess up the tension in my foundation row and with my poor eyesore its really hard for me to see stitches. I stick to knitting for this reason. But I crocheted something with this dark yarn and loved the experience. But the price point has kept me from making anything else by them. But I've been looking for some really good cotton yarns for some summer tees and it was cool to see that theirs is worth the price. Any budget friendly ones you would recommend? I need about 900 yards and would prefer a dk, worsted, or aran weight over fingering which is all I've been able to find locally at a decent price point.

Hi new viewer here! Fell in love with your personality. Thank you so much for this very honest review. I saw plenty of their ads online and now II'm def second guessing it for the price and the wear and tear especially that crazy sexy wool. rather disappointing.

WHY didn't I see this review before I made my Wool and the Gang order?? I found this girl who makes really cute sweater patterns and she loves Wool and the Gang clearly because most of her patterns call for Crazy Sexy Wool. I had no idea that roving could wear so badly. I wonder if I can cancel...

I think the problem with Wool and the Gang is how they took advantage of the quarantine knitters and crocheters. Their whole sustainability mission is nice but honestly it seems overplayed to justify the high price while appealing to younger crafters. It would be better to purchase from indie dyers, or better yet, local farms that sell yarn.
