A yarn twist refers to the number of turns per unit length that are inserted into a yarn during its manufacture. This twist gives the yarn strength, affects its appearance, and determines its feel or texture. There are two main types of twists:
S-twist: When the yarn is twisted in a direction that resembles the central part of the letter "S". This means the twist spirals upwards to the left.
Z-twist: When the yarn is twisted in a direction that resembles the central part of the letter "Z". This means the twist spirals upwards to the right.
The amount of twist can be described as either low, medium, or high, and it impacts the final fabric in various ways:
Low twist yarns tend to be softer and are often used in knitting and for making fabrics with a soft hand.
High twist yarns are stronger and more durable, making them suitable for weaving and for fabrics that require more structure.
