YARN WINDER for $25 -- Worth it?

I have found when winding that if I start with the outside loose yarn and drop the ball in a bag on the floor it winds much smoother!

I have the same yarn winder and for the money it works well for me. I use empty aluminum foil cardboard tubes and that really helps. Thank you for the video😊

You should keep a tension while winding so the yarn wont be too lose, but dont hold it too tight or your yarn could stretch and it could mess up your gauge. And the tangles at the end are always gonna happen, you can try to wind from the outside n might avoid the tangle

I have a Knit Picks winder and I believe it cost $20 USD on Amazon. :) It works well and doesn't leave such a huge hole in the center. I generally pull the outside of the skein instead of using the center pull, but the cakes work both ways. Tension control could help. I pull my yarn taut with my winder and it makes for neater balls.

thank you for the video, I have the lacis yarn ball winder 2 , I got it at a yarn shop for 50$ American, I live in states it works well local shops tend to be pricy, if you wish for a deal the net is where you go, even on yarn and knitting stuff, have a good day

In my experience this will work better if your yarn is below the winder. I usually pull the yarn vomit section out first and do it and then there is no problem. When it starts winding funny like your gray ombre did - it's big enough and is not going to improve. I was taught not to wind with any tension on the yarn because that will stretch the yarn out.. I have never had a problem with the yarn tangling as it comes out of the center of the cake. I have ordered a bigger ball winder - been using the knit picks one for years - but now that I am dyeing yarn the worsted weights and above need a winder that makes a bigger ball. Kristine Kelly has a youtube channel that I can't remember the exact name of but she did reviews on several different winders and I followed her advice.

If you wind your own yarn balls, you need to be aware of twist, which depends in part of which direction you are winding and which direction you are pulling yarn from the ball. It is possible to add twist until it is too much or to relax twist until it is too loose. I have been thinking about getting this one, but I heard that you can only worsted weight yarn or thinner yarn than worst weight yarn. And I don’t use a lot of thin yarn I love bulky yarn.

I live in the UK and have a Knit Pro Winder it cost me about $35 , its great I had a cheaper one but it used to tangle the yarn, this is fine. I. Think Knit Pro is Knit Picks in the US.

I had one of these once and it just created a loopy mess for me. It seems to do better for you. I also had one from KnitPicks that lasted about a year and just broke. I now have a plastic one from Stanwood and it works well. I also purchased a wooden one from Fiber Arts and it works the best, but it was more expensive. Informative video but the music is too loud and distracting. can't hear what you are saying.

Why not add an empty toilet roll or empty paper towel roll onto the winder before you wind your cake on? Wouldn't that help to keep the cake in better shape?

That works too, I just find it awkward to leave the tube in when knitting and had the same problem when removing it. If it works for you go for it though!

Have you ever knit socks with the Woolike and if so how do they wear?

I haven't made a full pair but have tried using it for heels and toes. Honestly, I'm not very happy with how they are wearing so probably won't use it again. My toe is starting to poke through and the heel is looking thin 😕. I've been really happy with the sweaters I have made with it though!

Knit Picks is a better ball winder. It winds tighter and there's no knots when knitting from the ball.

It’s too much yarn for the ball winder. The ball shouldn’t extend beyond the base.

Why are you rewinding center pull skeins? Waste of time, and not needed. I've been using the same yarn ball winder for over a year and I've been very happy with it. You actually want the wound yarn to "collapse" in the center to relax the yarn. It pulls fine from the center. Great ball winder for the price.

I was told a while ago to rewind yarn so you don't find any surprise knots or breakage in the middle of the skein.

Why wind a ball from a skein? Just pull the wool from the middle.
