Lt Colonel Allison Brooks was my grandfather. He was a B17 pilot in the 401st, before he was transferred to the mustang. He was piloting the lead bomber this day and would tell me about this day and Howard's flying many times throughout my childhood. He even had a painting with his bomber and Howard's P51 and a flaming 109 from this mission hanging in his study. I just stumbled on this post. My grandpa was my hero growing up. He piloted many planes, the B17, P51, A1 Skyraider and the C130, among others. He always said his favorite to fly was the P51. He retired from the Air Force with 2 stars. This brings tears to my eyes. Thank you so much for telling this story.

"An attack by a single fighter on four or five times his own number wasn't uncommon," wrote a fellow World War II fighter pilot in his postwar memoirs of Howard's performance, "but a deliberate attack by a single fighter against thirty-plus enemy fighters without tactical advantage of height or surprise is rare almost to the point of extinction." Howard was also the only fighter pilot Medal of Honor recipient in the European Theater. He was also a very capable P-40 pilot (6) with the American Volunteer Group, or more famously known as the Flying Tigers in the Burma campaign.

@@philgiglio7922 I think the name is Cantonese as Howard spent part of his childhood in Canton, China. The six meatballs were painted on Jim Howard's assigned aircraft a few days after his mission, over his objections, to dress it up for the press. The 356th Fighter Squadron Combat Mission Schedule for this 11 Jan 1944 mission indicates Howard was not flying his assigned aircraft ("DING HAO!", AJ-A) this mission. The schedule shows Howard flew AJ-X (43-6441) and oddly Lt Brandt flew AJ-A. This from Steve Blake's book "the Pioneer Mustang Group" and the US National Archives.

For everyone asking about the Japanese kill marks on his aircraft, Major (later General) Howard originally was US Navy until Pearl Harbor. He left the Navy to join the American Volunteer Group, famously better known as the Flying Tigers over Burma, and got 6 confirmed kills there. When AVG disbanded, he joined the USAAF, commissioned as a Captain then later to Major. It's also said that he is the only USAAF fighter pilot to have been awarded toe MoH in the European Theater. He later would go on to help coordinate the air cover for the D-Day landings. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_H._Howard

I just want to tell you that it's crazy how the quality of your videos have improved, and i'm not only talking about the animation details but i personaly love the scenes from inside the cockpits. I'm one of the earlier fans and if you compare some of the older videos with this or any of the newer ones you can see the huge improvement.

The animation gets better and better, and you can easily notice it from video to video. Good job to the animators. I also like the textures and the narrator's voice, as it is always clean and soothing. From Brasil, keep making these films.

I've read dozens and dozens of WW2 stories mainly of the Pacific campaign, I've never come across Major James H. Howard ( unless I just don't remember any mention). I was really perplexed by the Japanese rising sun kills on his plane. I did some research and found he also flew with the Flying Tigers in China, so that makes sense now, and WOW kills on both fronts of the war, how in the world this guy got around and survived, one bad-ass, son-of-a-bitch flyer. Great job on the animation

Incredible animation that just keeps on getting better every video!!! Would love to see how you guys would tackle the stories of the Fortress Island aka Malta GC, which during WW2 became the most bombed place on Earth in April of 1942. The heroics of the islands defenders and those who supplied the besieged island are legendary. Keep up the amazing work, Yarnhub!! A small footnote to the Ye Olde Pub vids you've done as well, all going well, by the end of this year there will be a 1/48 scale depiction of Franz Stiglers BF109-G6 escorting the Ye Olde Pub on display permanently at the karting club which is built on the site of the former Kimbolton airfield.

As always, excellent job telling and illustrating the story of this hero from the greatest generation. My grandpa flew B-17s with the 8th Air Force and in his last days told us grandkids of his experiences during the war and always spoke highly and affectionately of all the fighter escorts but especially the P51s.

I have been following your work for almost 3 years and the improvement in animation quality is simply impressive. The way of storytelling and the sync between the scenes and the background music has always been sooo gripping. I often have listened back to specific parts because the syncronization of music, animation a script was amazing. Of course there are still things you can improve (for example, there is a flaw in the part beginning at 3:37; the P-51's propeller stops while the plane is hurtling down. To be honest, it is very easy to spot, I have managed to recognize it instantly, so actually i can hardly understand how it has been unnoticed). Correcting these little errors will make your animations much more professional. Keep up the good work!
