The birth of the moniker the Bloody 100th came about on October 10th 1943. It was the third day of daily bombing raids of US forces against German targets. The 100th Bomb Group led by Major John Eagan took off and assembled into formation. The last plane in the formation was the most vulnerable and known as "tail-end Charlie". On this mission that misfortune fell to a plane called the Royal Flush. It was piloted by young officer Lieutenant Robert Rosenthal. 13 planes took off and only one would return. How could the most vulnerable of the planes in the worst position make it's way home on that day?

Not squadron. Group. 3 squadrons. On march 6, 1944, Mission 250, target Berlin, the 100th put up all 22 flyable aircraft. None returned. Later it was found one damaged aircraft had landed in Switzerland and was interned. The remainder were destroyed.

With our limited mind resources and knowledge, we could only guess the answer of why us and me. Knowing that we don't know is our only comfort. How will they move everyone in the ground personnel and all replacements for whenever will be the next mission? Will it be disbanded or a squadron of people from other squadrons, and those just arrived from the states?

@@t_sixtyfivex_wing8787 After mission 250, the group commander of the 100th had a breakdown on the ramp when none of his men returned. He was hustled away before the men could see, and replaced. The war went on. Several groups were virtually wiped from the sky that day. Everyone knew it. 3 days later, 9 March 1944, Eighth bomber command hit Berlin again in force. I marvel at the courage of the men who mounted up and flew that mission in the full knowledge of the massacre 3 days before. As a young man in the late '80's, I knew some of them. They didnt talk about it much.

@@keatonhugo6129 Hmm. Personally I think it did what it needed for the show. It didn't have a Yarnhub style narator to make it clear who was who and what was what. Covering any addational crews would have clogged up the flow and made it harder to understand. Getting up set at Master of the Air for not covering every crew is like getting upset at Yarnhub for not going into deep background of any of the crew. Not that kind of Media. Sense the show did do such a good handling of one's who where on screen, I didn't feel any disservice or lack of love to the men in the event being covered. Just a runtime that needed to be meet. Just a different form of media. Luckily for us we have Yarnhub a more documentary style media to also watch and enjoy, I think both did perfectly for there job for the kind of show that they are.

@@keatonhugo6129 Got to hear a number of the names of the planes and pilots lost in the interrogation, which I'd enjoyed, however this is consistent with Band of Brothers and the Pacific. Both of those were deeply cared about, and it shows, however they'd had to effectively condense the companies to craft a watchable piece of entertainment. Even as a seasoned watcher of Band of Brothers with intimate knowledge I still can catch myself hearing names I don't recognize. The showrunner Jonathan Orloff has posted a number of cool posts regarding production in "Masters of the Air Behind the Scenes" a facebook group, it's clear he cares about the 100th and the story, he'd been working on the adaption for 11 years. I ultimately liked the show but felt it had just tried to do and show too much in too little episodes. The production was done during lockdown, suffered multiple delays which could not have helped.

What an incredible story of resilience and bravery! The "Bloody 100th" certainly earned its name on that fateful day. It's amazing to think about the courage these young officers displayed in the face of such daunting odds. Thank you for sharing this poignant piece of history!

Bravery while targeting civilians ? Like oh yeah man they ran through flak to kill those kids
@certifiedfreeaboo3790
@certifiedfreeaboo3790 19 күн бұрын
@@jacobc722yeah, it’s bravery. War is inherently a nasty thing, and people have to do horrible things. It doesn’t change the fact that the actions of individuals in the face of death constitutes bravery. Bravery is not necessarily a moral concept.
@jacobc722
@jacobc722 19 күн бұрын
@@certifiedfreeaboo3790 “have to do” yeah man those German babies were at the door of those airmen and I’m sure you’d say the same things about other groups of people who did horrible things and definitely not flip flop
@certifiedfreeaboo3790
@certifiedfreeaboo3790 19 күн бұрын
@@jacobc722 no, even people I see as evil can still be brave. Once again, bravery is not about doing the right thing, but rather showing courage in the face of danger to yourself. Even if I disagree with a group of people, they can still be inherently brave. I am not defending the morality of the US for bombing civilians, but rather stating that the airmen were brave. Just like the Germans who went to fight them.
@certifiedfreeaboo3790
@certifiedfreeaboo3790 19 күн бұрын
@@jacobc722 that’s not to say I don’t personally see the US airmen as heroes (I am biased, obviously). Wars are fought for the sake of the rich, old, and powerful. Everyone in the middle just suffers. And yes, it is a “have to do” situation. There are many severe punishments that can be brought against you for disobeying orders, especially during war time. People naturally value themselves and their groups more than others.

My mother had a cousin. Her first husband was a waist gunner on a B-17. He completed his tour and re-upped. Third mission, second tour and he was killed. With the availability of information today I was able to find exactly where his grave is, in Denmark.
