I think my store is better stocked than I thought since I’ve seen the tubular yarn and a few things you weren’t familiar with. However, those crochet kits- I would never ever recommend one to a beginner there’s videos up for sone kits made by that brand but they made totally different ones to sell at Joann’s so good luck if you need help (and I did. I should go back to the one I have now that I’ve made tons of amis but I had to give up because every possible way I could interpret one part of the pattern I was still getting really screwy results). And the yarn is just horrible in the kit. Super splitty and if you frog it even once it’s not going to be easy for a beginner to work with. Worth saying too- the kits do say intermediate on them and won’t teach you anything if I recall correctly. It was basically just a pattern. I picked one up about a year ago and it helped motivate me to learn to seriously crochet but now Joanns also sells the Wobbles crochet kits (but won’t let you use any coupons and I think those kits are mega pricey) and those would be much better for a beginner with video instructions and special yarn that doesn’t split and from what I can see a nicer hook than the super crappy plastic cheaper than cheap (worse than the plastic Susan bates) hooks in the 9.99 kits. And oooh that rainbow mandala baby that caught your attention isn’t new but it’s been out of stock for ages online and every store within like 50 miles of me. I was beginning to think it no longer actually existed but alas- you found it! I really wanted to make a project with that because I usually buy mandala over Caron because Joann’s has the better coupons but Caron cakes does more rainbows. And on locked hooks and needles- depends on the store. I have two in my town- the nicer one with a pretty decent yarn department and a teeny tiny one and the smaller one did recently add security signs and may have some of their hooks and needles locked up now though they didn’t used to be. That shop locks their Happy Planner stickers too and is the only place I have ever seen that. Other larger store definitely doesn’t lock up Happy Planner and their Clover hooks are unlocked, I think but their Clover needles are locked (recently had to flag down an employee to unlock one for me). I’ve seen random variations where the hooks may be locked and the needles not or none of them are. Same deal with Michael’s as well (though less common there as they never tend to have as much Clover or needles and hooks in general. My local Michael’s hangs a photo of the complete set of Clovers that you have to bring to the counter to get. Joann’s has the complete set out but locked- Michael’s is bigger on locking up their fine art supplies since they tend to carry pricier items there than Joann’s) but very location dependent but I gather that’s a frequently shoplifted item. The prices also tend to be higher at the store that lock them up too! Coincidence? 😉
