My father used to work as a forester and I used to help him out when I was a boy. When pine trees are pruned, the branches are cut as close to the trunk as possible. This eliminates or greatly reduces the branch knots so if the floor is pine or a similar tree that is why :) Great tutorial too!

Great tutorial! I’m pretty new to Substance Designer, but I’m learning so much, and am still able to tweak your approach for different wood effects. Awesome stuff!! I’m about 12 minutes in to your tutorial, and to answer your question: on fine wood mill work, the boards are generally cut above and below the knots, to get as much “un knotted” length of board as possible. A shop will order boards in 10-12 foot lengths (usually), and whatever widths they need for a project (4-8 inches is most common)They’ll specify a minimum “usable” amount to get quality boards with fewer knots. Sections with knots will be cut, and sometimes boards will be glued together and sanded down so they appear to be one one solid board (the only visible clue is that the wood grain doesn’t match, but a skilled millworker will match boards as closely as possible for tone and grain density). The primary reason is that knots are ugly. But another comment or mentioned that also reduces the integrity over time, which makes sense. I’ll ask about that. For rustic barnwood styles, knots are kept because they add to the look.

Thank you for watching and for your comment. I am glad if my tutorial is helpful. And big thanks for explaining the wood mill work and about the wood knots. Its very interesting topic and I think knowing this can help us to make more realistic wood texture. I’m glad to have you here.

Great breakdown of the material. I think you do a great job of breaking down each node to a level where it's understandable how you used it, without making the video drag by going in to too much minute detail. Thank you!

'Branch Spots' aren't commonly seen in word floors or good lumber because they compromise the structural integrity. As they dry, they become smaller and pop out.

I followed along until the Pixel Processing part and then watched the linked video. Failed. Then read the comments on this video and he recommended this which worked really well and very simply "Sorry for the confusion on this. Actually, I don't think the pixel process works well for this case. The better solution is to just use a directional warp. Feed in the noise to warp in the top input, then the pattern in the bottom input. Now you can set a high intensity value and adjust the angle to offset the noise for each plank."

This just works if you have only one row or one collumn of tiles. In Cases that one of the two are higher than one, it's gonna look terrible. You will either see a lot of repetition on the tiles, or, you will see breaks where there is no divisions.

Is it me or did you just skip the bottom part that handles the roughness ?

Very nice tutorial. I have a question about the output images that this material designer can export. I am in need of some diffuse (seamless) materials in order to render them in vray. I see that the base color is flat, but the diffuse material needed for rendering has to be with depth and shadows. How can i obtain such a diffuse output material?
@yaschan996 жыл бұрын
If you want me to do that for you you can buy this material and I will send you customized one. But that's easy, just add ambient occlusion to the albedo. I recommend HBAO node. Just drag the height to it, then in the right area before the output, create a blend node, and use multiply, and adjust the strength of that. If you want to add extra output for your diffuse you can just add that and choose "Diffuse" in Usage section.

Thank you for the comment and for watching. I really appreciate it.

Thank you for quick response. I'm still rendering using traditional texturing with the diffuse map. I usually make it in Photoshop, but i would like to switch and make it in substance and I was wondering if there is a tutorial on that.
@AlexB-nt8bg6 жыл бұрын
I use diffuse mapping instead of base color. So i do not understand why the diffuse output is not generating material with more depth and contours. Thank you !

HI Jaakko, very good tuto. I am missing something or maybe I just overlooked at it. The gradient called Wood Color, how do I set up this? have had no luck. Thx

Just use a gradient map node. It takes monochrome input.

Ahh. I understand. It's easy. Just just drag and drop the graph into the other graph. The outputs you have defined will show up and you can draw out connections from them.

may i make a few suggestions? less talking at the beginning of the video. it takes 4 minutes and 30 seconds to get to the point which is 4 minutes too many. also slow down when going over the graph and make sure to scroll down each node so we can actually see what you did to the node otherwise the video is kind of useless. you skimmed past the splatter node in the first half of the video and past one of the transform 2d nodes i had to figure it out myself which is contrary to the point of watching a tutorial. other than that its a good tutorial.
