Episode 35 Notes: Prelude to the Battle of Badr Prior to the Battle of Badr, several things occurred. Firstly, the Prophet SAW created a souk for the Muslims to use, after seeing that the Non-Muslim souk’s were not ethnical. This souk flourished and was run by the Shariah. It was during 1-2AH that the laws of Tahara, such as Wuhdu and Ghusl were revealed. In the Ramadan of 2AH, fasting was made obligatory for Muslims. Zakat ul Fitr was also revealed in Ramadan. A few months later Zakat ul Maal was revealed. Surah Al Hajj, was revealed towards the end of the Maki Era. It was the first time Jihad was referenced and permission was given to the Muslims to fight against those who oppress innocent people. The Four Types of Jihad that occurred during the Life of Muhammad SAW: 1. No Military Jihad: Be patient, forgive the oppressors and turn the other cheek. This lasted the entire 13 years of the Makkan Era. 2. Permission was given for Jihad but, only volunteer based. 3. Jihad was made Wajib against the Quraysh only. This was done to show that the Muslims were an independent expeditionary force. Other reasons were to cut of the lifelines of the Quraysh and to expand the Islamic State. 4. Jihad was allowed against all of the Mushrik Tribes in Arabia Military Expeditions There are two types of Military Expeditions: 1. Ghazwa (war): These are expeditions led by the Prophet SAW himself. The Prophet SAW participated in 19 of them and 8 had actual fighting. 2. Sariyya (expedition) : Expeditions the Prophet SAW commanded the Sahabah to do. But the Prophet SAW himself didn’t go on. There are 30+ Sariyya’s. The first military expedition was the Battle of Al Abwa which took place in 2AH. It led to no engagement with the Quraysh since they had left already. But, alliances were formed with the tribes that live outside Medina and thus the Islamic State expanded. The second military expedition was the Expedition of Ubaydah Ibn Al Harith against the Quraysh. In this expedition some arrows were fired by both Muslims and Quraysh. But a neutral party came along and stopped the feud before anything serious occurred. Thus both sides went on their way. But not before the Muslims made an alliance with the neutral party. A very important military expedition was the Patrol of Zul Al-Ushairah when the Prophet SAW led an expedition to ambush Abu Sufyan’s caravan that was heading to Syria. The Prophet SAW missed the caravan and thus returned to Medina. The last major conflict prior to the Battle of Badr, was the Nakhla Raid. When 8 companions went from Medina on a covert mission to observe the Quraysh. This ended in them hijacking a Qurayshi caravan full of useful loot and then bringing it back to the Prophet SAW. This raid led to the capture of two Quraishi’s who were held for ransom, before being released, after which one of the two accepted Islam. It’s important to note that the Prophet SAW did not command the companions to hijack the caravan and that they chose to do this. This action frustrated the Prophet SAW until Allah SWT revealed a Quranic verse, which made the action more just, in light of the Quraysh’s historical oppression of the Muslims. Fun Trivia fact: The first obligatory fast in Islam was the day of Ashura in 1AH. This fast was later made Sunnah after, fasting during Ramadan was revealed during that same year. So from 2AH , Ramadan became Fardh and Ashura became Sunnah. Fun Trivia fact: The Historical event of the Karbala has no relation to Ashura. Fun Trivia fact: Zakat ul Fitr was revealed before Zakat ul Maal. Fun Trivia fact: In Makkah, the Prophet SAW did not do a single military act. Fun Trivia fact: Abu Bakr RA stated, that as soon as Surah Al Hajj was revealed, I knew there would be war. Fun Trivia fact: It was in the second military expedition that Sa’d ibn Abi Waqas RA, fired the first arrow in the way of Allah SWT. Fun Trivia fact: These “alliances” that were made with the tribes outside Medina, essentially meant that, these tribes would warn the Muslims, if the Makkan’s ever tried to attack Medina. Fun Trivia fact: During the lifetime of the Prophet SAW, the Sahabah never had one person per camel. An animal was always being shared between several companions. It was only in the times of the Umayyads that this changed. Fun Trivia fact: Sawdah Bin Zam’ah RA was the second wife of the Prophet SAW. Fun Trivia fact: Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul would later go onto be the leader of the munafiqs. Please note: I HIGHLY recommend that you all watch YQ’s Seerah series, as I DON’T cover every single detail the Sheikh mentions. I made these notes primarily for myself but, decided my fellow brothers and sisters may benefit from them too. I no doubt will have made mistakes in my notes. All the good in these notes is from Allah SWT and all the mistakes are from myself. But, I was very meticulous and tried my best to make sure everything is accurate as the Sheikh mentions it. You also will see I have added “Fun Trivia facts” under each of my notes. These FTFs are information YQ said that was off topic or not necessary to include in my notes for the episode. But, they were still worth mentioning hence the inclusion as FTFs. FTFs aren’t always HAPPY pieces of information. Sometimes they are very sad trivia. I just want to say that FTF is the phrase I used for them all collectively when making the notes. What you did up here is quoted exact words. Yasir Qadhi in lecture basically taught us the lesson behind it. Newspapers were the main medium of media back in the days and they were doing that same thing what now days digital media is doing. Showing oppressed is the oppressor and vice versa.

If the Quraysh persecuted, tortured and confiscated the property of the Muslims for 13 years, the Muslims have the right to fight back, take back their homes and property. This is called just compensation and war.

Didn't Allah obligate 5 prayers when prophet Muhammed (peace and blessings be upon him) was still in Mecca? During the Israa and Miraaj..? If this is correct then why was the prayer not perfected in Mecca?

He mentioned that they used to perform 2 rakahs for all 5 times but later in madina , they were perfected (the rakahs)... that's what I got from it. And also, the qibla change happen towards makkah from Jerusalem and rest of the wudu and ghusl pillars were ordained properly.

I do not agree with the sheikh on the issue of jihad, because in Islam there are two types of jihad, one called jihad defense and the other called jihad demand, as it came in an authentic hadith, the Messenger of God, peace be upon him, says jihad is the height of the hump of Islam.

Listening to this seerah for the first time I love it. I have question tho, on this clip (part 35) at 23:43 I don’t understand and I think there is a contradiction If Allah said no compulsion in religion (Sura 2:256) So why is this fight “until” they accept Islam. I understand the fighting back... but fighting until they become Islam is where my question. Kindly explain.
