For the Barbie movie dolls, you're right. But US dolls collectors are kinda lucky because here in France, the Barbie and Ken Perfect Day dolls (the cheaper ones, 25$) were just released this week in stores for... 44€99!!! 😅 Sorry Mattel but at those prices, I don't think the dolls of the movie will sell very well. Parents would buy playline Barbie dolls to their kids.

Rainbow High alone for a regular series can cost anywhere from $50-$60 so it can get very frustrating hearing people who live in the USA complaining about prices when that $50 they’re paying for the collector dolls we are paying for the base play line doll

With the Barbie movie I do think/wonder if they are marketing towards the adult doll collector community instead. $50 is expensive for a playline Barbie but these apparently aren't being sold in stores (outside the Mattel one) and if you were to put it against say an integrity release then they are cheaper and more durable than that counterpart. I also like the back to Barbieland doll as well as the closet and President Barbie. Gloria I like but will wait for clearance and the kens......not with that face LOL

I think they are. The movie is PG-13 and not really aimed at children. It’s possible that they’re aiming at adults who aren’t collectors, but who would definitely buy movie merch.

17:45 Jenny was actually never stopped, they just stopped making playline some time ago. They've been releasing Licca Chan castle Jennys consistently for a long time. They're the collector doll line. I have many from this decade and the late 2010s! It's really hard to keep up with Jenny as she's so obscure outside Japan so I can understand people not knowing this. So excited playline is back though!!

I think the movie assortment dolls are $50, and released in June (for a late July movie release), so all of the toy social media influencers can pay full price for them, and do all the free advertising for Mattel for them, so, buy the time the movie actually releases, they'll have made so much money from the influencers that there will be price cuts for the people who loved the movie, and want the dolls from the movies, come July.

Jennie's shoes are so so cute! I really like this #Licca line they have going on, but I feel like it's been getting cheaper and a little more kid like as the dolls come out. I don't know the full story behind #Licca, but I thought they were geared towards their adult audience. Japan has a a ton of Licca adult collectors so it would make sense to appeal to that market. But I feel like with every new release, the outfits are getting more pastel unicorn than chic girl. Their first couple doll releases were so friggen cute, I wish they'd go back to that! I will say I like Jennie's outfit but it could totally have more to it. I'm not getting JENNIE from it, it's more of a licca outfit to me. Also - the LEGS!!!! They are just hollow plastic!!! Licca has never been a bjd baddie but then they could at least giver her soft rubbery legs like the old Jennie dolls or just go the bjd route. Honestly though, even with all of this complaining that I'm doing, I'm stilll gonna buy her LOL. I'll just plop her head on an obitsu doll.

Well, the kawaii aesthetic is much bigger in Japan than in the west so a more colorful and cutesy aesthetic doesn’t necessarily translate to “meant for younger audiences”. If you’re targeting the otaku crowd f.e., kawaii is probably the way to go lmao.

Licca has been primarily geared toward Kids.. She's the topselling doll in Japan for a reason. I do think, they geared up a teen licca to reintroduce Jenny to a newer generation. Since Jenny has stopped being a playline for more than 10 years...
