Shaquille O'Neil is famous for breaking backboards. He broke so many backboards that the NBA made a rull that the baskets had to strengthen steal braces and increase stability to prevent the basket support from falling down and backboards shattering due to Shaq's dunks.
@dicktrickle7412 ай бұрын
@dicktrickle741 0 seconds ago Shaq never broke a backboard or stanchion with the initial thrust of his hand / hands hitting the rim though. He always had to resort to hanging on the rim with his full body weight.

The NHL has a compilation called Broken Glass featuring heads being thrust through pans on that type of glass, heads being thrust through plexiglass (this is worse) in a lot of instances.

I saw Shaq break the rim completely off the backboard in person while he was at LSU during the “Purple and Gold game”, an exhibition intrasquad game. He just casually walked away still holding the rim.

history of backboards and why they hardly break nowadays The first backboards used in college basketball games were made of wood. Complaints from spectators saying it blocked their view resulted in the invention of glass backboards in 1910. Because they were prone to breaking, glass was banned as a backboard material until Indiana University installed more durable 1.5-inch thick plate glass around 1919. Today, NCAA and NBA backboards come in 1/2-inch thick tempered glass. Tempered glass is made shatter-resistant through a rapid heating and cooling process. This is what gives a backboard its strength and causes it to break into smaller pieces if a player manages to shatter it. Then in 1976, the breakaway rim was invented and dunking was reinstated as a legal way to make a basket. This technology allows the rim to bend down slightly when a player slam dunks the ball, which puts less strain on the backboard, prevents the rim from becoming distorted and reduces the chance of wrist injury. After Darryl Dawkins shattered two backboards in his 1979-80 season, the NBA officially adopted breakaway rims, which have become an essential element of high-level basketball, including the NCAA, ever since. In his 1992-93 season, Shaquille O’Neal dunked so hard he broke the backboard’s steel supports. Miraculously, the backboard itself stayed intact, a testament to the incredible strength of tempered shatter-resistant glass. Stronger backboard braces have been the norm ever since.

Darryl Dawkins broke 2 backboards in 1979, and he named his dunks. The first time he broke one he called it "The Chocolate-Thunder-Flying, Robinzine-Crying, Teeth-Shaking, Glass-Breaking, Rump-Roasting, Bun-Toasting, Wham-Bam, Glass-Breaker-I-Am-Jam. He also named many other dunks: the Rim Wrecker, the Go-Rilla, the Look Out Below, the In-Your-Face Disgrace, the Cover Your Head, the Yo-Mama, the Spine-Chiller Supreme, and the Greyhound Special . He also, like Shaq would many years later, gave himself nicknames, most famously "Chocolate Thunder", and "Sir Slam". After he broke the second rim, the NBA made it a suspendable offense.

My very expert consultation.... I was 6'4, 180... The breakaway rim is just collapsible... she bends with you... I was waify... it would throw me up on the spring... big boys can kill it

Sometimes it was just the accumulation stress on the glass...dunk after dunk, slamming the rims, the backboards...the accumulation of hits...
