Hey Tim. I'm actually going to look at and hopefully buy a 2001 60HP Merc tomorrow. I know how to eo a comp test but it's been a while so was good to see you do it on the actual motor I'm getting as a refresher. BTW if you make a remote starter button that just operates the solenoid (push button, two light wires, and 2 clips, connect to live and start terminals on solenoid) you don't need to mess around with earthing the plug leads as the ignition is not on.

Yes all you need is a push button to start the motor for testing but you need to be able to primer the carbs when you first start it which my remote does by pushing the key in for a few seconds just like the key start on the console. You can set up a push button for this too. Mercs are cold blooded and takes a few primers to stay running if not ran for awhile. My videos are a good guild for testing just remember link and sync adjustment screws are not the timing screws. When setting the idle RPM in forward gear you adjust the small idle timing screw. That's why when I set the initial idle timing that is 2 - 6 degrees ATDC I set it at 4 degrees so when you adjust the RPM idle your just lowering the timing closer to 2 degrees. Hit me up if you have questions

Hi Tim, I have a mariner 60HP 3 cylinder. 1998 Model. I have 108 psi compression on all 3. Do you think this is ok? Struggling to start. Good spark. Timing good.
@TimsWorkshopTJY3 ай бұрын
108 is still good especially having the all within 10psi of each other. I have 110 to 115

Thanks Tim, Next I will check the fuel pump suction and pressure sides. The priming bulb goes hard, plenty due in carb. New needles. Perhaps the floats needs adjustment? I have good spark. Timing is good. I just don’t think fuel is reaching the cylinders. Thanks for all your videos. They are a great help!😊

The pressure coming out the fuel pump sb 3.5psi. Make sure you have a new fuel filter and you fuel hoses are newer and not restricted. Temp install the clear fuel hose from the fuel pump to filter to see if the flow is solid without bubbles. Air in the line will affect how the motor runs

I have a 2009 90hp merc 2 stroke . Does this still apply ? I get 130 , 130 , 125

Hi Steve, what matters is they are not more than 10 psi difference between each cylinder. I have a 1957 2 cylinder with 90 psi but both cylinders are 90 which is still good

Is a 90 on 3 cyl low compression?
@TimsWorkshopTJY3 жыл бұрын
Depends on what you mean by low?
@facundomoya28573 жыл бұрын
Compare with your engine... I’ve got the same 60 hp

What compression are you getting on each cylinder?

I think I know your question now that I reread it. 90 is low but what are the other cylinders reading?
@facundomoya28573 жыл бұрын
90 even all 3

The next 2 on this Mercury 60hp series you will like too then. These motors are complicated but if folks have the service manual its pretty easy to follow. The performance on these motors are awesome
