@@gabrielreis9733 Not that surprising. People have famously gotten around banned words by using punctuation for years before the internet. F***, it's why the asterisk is such a well known glyph! It's not that surprising KZbin has code that says "In this word, if there is an ! where the i should be, it counts as the same word. If there's a # where the H should be, it counts as the same word. Etc." Not saying 8rack could've done much different, or that his video obviously has way better intentions than most that use that word in the title, merely that it's not surprising the "!" did not protect him. That and the word spelt out properly are likely exactly the same to KZbin's coding. Also he says the word a lot in the video, and KZbin can create subtitles automatically, so this transcript is also used in seeing whether something can be banned. So yeah, one exclamation mark in the title really doesn't stop KZbin noticing him using that word, over and over, even slightly.

But I agree that it doesn't make a lot of sense, had phyrexia started with nowadays color philosophy he would certainly be blue/black or even white/blue/black, new phyrexia struck gold by having a praetor in each color as it opens up a lot of room for characterization and gameplay options, and it's even cheeky that Elesh Norn, the main bad guy in new phyrexia, is pure white

I loved it enough to make a presentation in my reading class, choosing to focus on eugenics and the real life parallels between physis and eugenics, and I was particularly interested with the real life parallel to the nazi party, as well as just eugenists in general, with how they used these things as a way to not only suppress others but advance their own racist bullshit. Seriously, I learned, at the very least, as much, if not more, about eugenics and the history of eugenics as I would have if I had searched for educational videos about eugenics, and this video is "about" an obscure character from a trading card game only a small portion of the population even knows about, much less likes. I just wanted to mention a few minor things. 1.) Yawgmoth in the beginning describing the tenents of eugenics as what we understand to be rational science does not mean that is the message the writer is saying. That is what Yawgmoth is saying; Yawgmoth the man who did body horror stuff to prisoners and called them beautiful. Yawgmoth, who experimented on various groups and races so he could see what would happen, and because he could. It is made clear by the author that he is not to be trusted or believed. 2.) Saying that the actions Urza makes in "Bloodlines" undermines the message about eugenics in "The Thran" is a bit off. For starters the books were written by different people. But largely because Urza is a bad person. He is compared to Yawgmoth both by Yawgmoth's subordinates, people who have interacted with phyrexians, and Urza's own supporters. It has been said about him that left to his own devices he would have turned dominaria into a phyrexia; and that only the overarching evil of phyrexia actually made Urza look like a good person. Which is made more clear when before his death Urza started to worship Yawgmoth. The actions of protagonists and other characters does not mean that those are morally good or scientifically correct actions, nor does it mean that the author supports said actions. Especially when the characters performing those actions are objectively evil, and are portrayed as such.

@Cookies Aplenty ad. 1): The attribution of someone else's achievements to your ideology (to make it seem more trustworthy, for instance) is, in fact, a tactics as old as our civilisation might be. It should come of no surprise that Yawgmoth is utilizing it. Apart from that, both of your points are excellent. I fear that the failure to distinguish the author's views from the character's is what ultimately doomed us to never see such good fiction again.

For more EDH (I was gonna say vaguely leftist-ish, but tbh the Janklord guys don't get political either, they just aren't sponsored by WotC), I recommend Quest for the Janklord. Unfortunately it's mostly just the same four white guys in (almost) every video, but it's got jank-only rules so you don't just see the same cards every game, and see a lot of cards you've never heard of. It's also got a minimal-but-mildly-engaging plot (four dudes make a deal with a Demon for infinite booster packs, but they're all Fallen Empires packs, also they have to play Jank EDH (with gimmicks) in a Hell dimension forever), and it's just a very non-toxic, non-competitive vibe all around.

On a more serious note what Yawgmoth did to Dyfed makes me think of something I was told in high school. My class was visiting a mental health museum and we came a display about lobotomy. Then my teacher told us about her aunt. She got lobotomised in the 50s for being "a loose woman". That has stuck with me to this day. Don't have anything else to say about that.

Fun fact: he removed her brain from her body and kept her in a constant state of decay and forced regeneration Since she's an immortal planeswalker the only real way to kill her was either destroy her completely (happened to lots of old walkers) or she actually stops her own healing (how Serra died). Funny enough Yawgmoth was right, the planeswalker spark is located in the brain, however he was wrong in thinking it was an organ, it's a metaphysical tether that lets a planeswalker pull themselves out of a plane and into the blind eternities.

@Skylos 5 жыл бұрын
I am going to be completely honest, as someone who has read both The Thran and Brothers War, Yawgmoth has always seemed way more sympathetic to me than Urza (and that is just on account on how Urza had a massive part in destroying the entire planets ecosystem through a petty war between his brother about a goddamn stone, completely ignoring all of his other countless atrocities he commits after becoming a planeswalker). This is not saying that Yawgmoth is a good person in the slightest, especially since the entire Phyrexian ideology is based on a type of social darwinism you often see among fascists. But I do think it says a lot about how much of a cunt Urza was
@kyoken8691
@kyoken8691 5 жыл бұрын
Urza lacked the sophisticated charisma Yawgmoth had. Simple as that, in the end they were still both eugenicists. Yawgmoth would sweet talk you if he thought he could wrangle some kind of benefit from you, then stab you in the back once you were no longer useful. Urza on the other hand would just pummel you with his "obvious superiority" and how "right" he is all the time until you just agree to make him stop. Funny thing though they are in the colors that would have advocated for this process. Yawgmoth is black, as an autocrat who views everyone who is not him as imperfect, and therefore inferior. Urza was originally blue, but became white when he ascended, blue would of course be the "scientist" within him, and white being the "perfectionist" of society. It says something that the 2 titans that survived the Phyrexian invasion were Freyalise and Lord Windgrace, planeswalkers with ties to red and green.
@Skylos
@Skylos 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah I think you pretty much hit the nail on the head with that one. Honestly I feel like both red and green have been under-represented in magic in that way. Like, there is a lot of nuance to those colours but most of the time the main characters are focused around black, blue or white. Green is just seen as "big dude smash" or "HUG THE TREES" and red is usually just "I AM ANGERY! IMMA SHOOT FIRE!" (these are furthermore reasons I am not that big of a fan of Nissa or Chandra). Would be nice to see some more nuance among those colors (though maybe there has been and I have just missed it. Magic has A LOT of lore to keep track of)
@kyoken8691
@kyoken8691 5 жыл бұрын
@@Skylos old racist Nissa was actually a decent nuanced character with realistic flaws and sympathetic narratives. But you know how the pc police act around depictions of "racist" protagonists. I think the reason green and red are rarely given nuance is because they arent based on rationality. The rely on that "gut feeling" to drive their characters and that leaves less time for introspection or drama. Which is easy for an action story, but not for a complex narrative. Like for example which feels more sympathetic? Liliana's backstory or Nissa's.
@Skylos
@Skylos 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's true. Honestly I am not too familiar with "old racist Nissa" but I have heard from plenty of people that she was apparently a really good character. Should probably go back and read through those stories at some point.

I really enjoyed this, not only from a magic lore overview point of view, but also because of the general information. It is refreshing to see someone take a much deeper dive into the MTG lore other then "it is good, it makes sense" or "it is bad, narrative passing is horrible." The constant back and forth between the information and the narrative of the story really help to create a more complete picture of the finer details and short comings of a work of fiction. Overall, very enjoyable, and I hope you plan on doing more work like this; I hardly noticed that more than an hour went by.
