I don't think Andrew should have let his Kolbolds die to -1/-1 counters, but sacced them to the Alter. If you sacrifice Kobold to Ashnod's Alter in response to Yawgmoth -1/-1 ability, the ability fizzles and Peter would not draw a card. A sac outlet against a Yawgmoth deck really slows down the draw engine unless you stop targeting creatures all together and sac just for the draw trigger. Once a creature is Targeted it can fizzle if the creature is no longer on the battlefield and the draw will not happen. My friend pointed this out when I was building my Yawgmoth deck.
@MLucaj5 жыл бұрын
He didnt even have to do that. When peter sacs to yawg and targets a kobold, yawgs ability goes on the stack, THEN dictate triggers and goes on top of it. Andrew can sac the kobold to the dictate trigger that yawgs ability targeted and now it fizzles resulting in only 1 kobold lost from the dictate and no card draw for peter.
@MLucaj5 жыл бұрын
Pro tip, if someone targets a creature with yawgs -1 counters and has a grave pact effect, sac that creature to the grave pact effect before the -1 counter goes on. They do not get to put the -1 counter and therefore they also do not get to draw the card since the ability now fizzles. They can however choose to NOT place -1 counters they want the card draw.
@pauloalvarado36535 жыл бұрын
You may activate Yawgmoth’s first activated ability without choosing a target creature. You’ll just draw a card. However, if you choose a target and it becomes illegal before the ability tries to resolve, the ability won’t resolve and you won’t draw a car.
@MLucaj5 жыл бұрын
@@pauloalvarado3653 yup exactly, but if they do target a creature and have a grave pact effect you can sac it to the grave pact to fizzle out yawgs ability

@MUDDSTAH Peter missed out on a bunch of tokens from nest of scarabs. When’re he puts a minus counter on creature he gets a token: even works for his scarabs so he could have gone small infinity with the nest
@DischordMabinogi5 жыл бұрын
The problem is that it costs 1 life per Yawgmoth activation, which is pretty dangerous given that Andrew was playing Prossh that definitely has aristocrat cards in there that can randomly kill Peter at any moment.
@danriemer97245 жыл бұрын
Dischord nah, with 30 life and 4 mana, you’re likely to find a Zulaport cutthroat or a couple undying creatures to just end the game. Once nest hits the field he shouldn’t have settled for the long game by casting dictate, he should have used his life as a resource and go for the win that turn.
@TheAntoniusFunk5 жыл бұрын
@@danriemer9724 100% That was a serious missed opportunities.

Nest of Scarabs + Yawgmoth doesn't go infinite? If he has 1 scarab, he can't sac it to put a counter on the scarab itself. He would need 2 nests to do something like that.
@danriemer97245 жыл бұрын
Izik Moore I’m not saying nest + Yawgmoth is infinite. I’m saying sac a zombie from grave Titan to put a counter on any creature on the board to create an insect and draw a card. Then sac then insect to repeat the process. This is not infinite, but you’ll be able to draw 20+ cards. Odds are pretty good that you will find something to allow you to go infinite in those cards. I didn’t count up the toughness on board, but he could have used up to 28 life to draw 28 cards and leave him self at 2. He needs to stay at two so he has a life to pay to Yawgmoth to start the combo that will actually end the game.

@danriemer97245 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure what is in the Yawgmoth deck, but I would have been a lot more aggressive in digging for cards when that Nest of Scarabs hit the field. Every counter placed will generate an insect to be sacrificed, to draw a card, to place a counter, to repeat the process. With 30 life and mana open, I bet the game could have been pretty close to over right there. Dictate is kind of a nonbo with the nest since it eliminates targets for -1/-1 counters to be placed on. Also, I love seeing these higher powered decks face off!

Purphoros is in the running for my least favorite card in EDH. It does too much damage too easily and most decks simply don't have a good way of dealing with it once it's on the field, especially since if the Purph player is smart it will never, ever turn into a creature. Indestructible Enchantment is just flat out impossible for a lot of decks to deal with. I wouldn't shed any tears if it got banned. (Not saying it should.)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but when Yawgmoth died and went to the command zone, that was a redirection. Yawgmoth actually did die and even though he didn't hit the graveyard, there should have still been a death trigger for Dictate of Erebos, correct?
@Devin-oh7gr5 жыл бұрын
No its a replacement effect. If the commander would change zones you may instead put them into the command zone.
@DarkEinherjar5 жыл бұрын
"Die" in Magic = go to the graveyard from the battlefield. If the creature doesn't hit the graveyard at all, no death triggers. Returning a commander to the command zone is a replacement effect unless a card tells you to do so.

Ok cool, thanks guys!
@AstridCeleste965 жыл бұрын
This replacement effect is also why commanders with death triggers aren't ideal, like Elenda, the Dusk Rose and the Spirit Dragons of Kamigawa. They have to be built in a way that can recur them or let copies die (ie. Elenda runs reanimation, and Keiga the Tide Star runs copy effects and lets the copies get sacced to the Legendary Rule and die).
