Jack Middelburg was the last privateer rider to win a 500cc GP He rode a great race. P.S Randy Mamola slowed because of a broken Disc Valve.

Remember watching live at the time ,15 years old (a great time for 500 GP's) Always remember it for Croz bringing Bazza down at Stowe, and the King getting beaten by Jack Middleburg on his privateer bike. That was a very rare sight for Kenny Roberts fans. Bring back 500 two strokes for me any time!

Had his fair share of luck in this race, but Jack took advantage of Roberts & Mamola fannying about, then when Mamola went onto 2 cylinders or whatever, he ambushed Roberts and fucked off with it. A great rider never given the right equipment and perishing in a Dutch Championship race at some open road dive.

Great racing from my youth. These guys were my heros! It's amazing that a newer bone stock 600cc sportbike can blitz these lap times. Modern chassis's and tires with 500cc two stroke power........., I would pay to see that.

This my era two strokes. My first bike was a Fizzy (FS1E). RD 200 electric. RD 250 air cooled, then 2 RD 350 LC'c with Micron exhausts. Could never afford the RD 500 LC.

I had an RD500LC, but sold it after two weeks of owning it so that I didn't either lose my license or kill myself. At speed it handled fine, but low speed handling was not what it was built for. Roundabouts were a nightmare at 30 mph, but no problem at all at 70 mph. A beautifully evil machine.

250LC, 350LC, then KR250 ending with an RG500. The only one I didn't race was the 250LC. The RG in Aust. mostly had to race in the 1000 class, 600 class was in my case ( being a South Aussie ) only at Mac Park. The RZ500 never had a chance, I held the lap record at MacPark from 86 til 92 on the RG and I sold it in 87! I used it on the road all the time and it pulled 11.5 @ 119mph down the quarter. The bike only had frequent oil changes, plugs, pads and new tyres to race it. Never lifted a head and it never even had a gearing change or even the fork oil. It was bought new and I was only seventeen. Clearing the plugs after it had warmed up left four trails in the mirrors and I never got tired of seeing that. The stock gearing was so tall that second was used in the suburbs, and second ran out at around 160 kmh. Also knew a guy who commuted on his, 1500km a week! It had 350,000 kay on it, he bought it new and the engine was mostly original and it never got washed. His only transport but definitely the best choice. I find it hard to think I sold it even though I knew it was the last roll of the dice for two strokes. But I raced and it was not competitive any more. Rode one 15 years later and have to admit that one disappointed me. My era also.

Bring back two strokes for me any day. I had an X7 with Microns back in '86 after I had passed my test, handled like a tea trolley but still quick for a 250. Rode my mate's 350 LC with allspeeds and it was the most exciting thing I ever rode and that includes all the large four strokes I owned later on.

I can only assume yes, the old tyres and suspension were state of the art back then but obsolete nowadays, I think the 2-stroke powerband on these would have been vicious and very difficult to control, some very talented riders in this video. It kind of makes me think the current GP riders have it a little easier with anti-wheelie, traction control etc. but the new bikes also do 100kmh faster than these bikes so I cant blame them :-P

.I agree. I think the most powerful acceleration thrill I ever got, was riding one of those. Except for the 750, I ridden pretty much every performance bike built, or one of its rivals. 2 stroke power seems to have that real urge when accelerating that you dont get from a 4 stroke that does a reasonably quicker 1/4 mile time

This actually was the case at the 1979 British GP. The prototype was a dog of a thing and Honda knew it, so they fueled them short to show well on the tv. By 1981 the bike was a much better prospect but it was just plain unreliable. It revved like crazy and broke a lot.

It's great to see someone who finally knows his GP/MotoGP stuff, instead of all these young one's that can only come out with "Rossi is God", "Rossi is King" etc, and don't you dare mention 'Casey Stoner' or your a piece of shit, or worse. Since Stoner joined MotoGP in 2006, he's won 2 titles, with 35 wins and 63 pod's. In the same time Rossi also has 2 titles with only 26 wins and 60 pod's. They can't handle hearing this fact, and watch the crap I'll receive for posting it again.

You weren't even alive when we had Spencer(2 titles), Lawson(4), Gardiner(1), who broke a streak that would've seen Lawson win 5 in a row, Schwantz(1), Doohan (5 in a row), and would have won a lot more but for injury. 13 years+ of REAL champion (legends) Some of the guys you mentioned wouldn't have win a GP in that period. If you think late 90's to mid 2000's were exciting, you should have been born 15 years earlier. I like what I like and you like who you do and NOTHING will change that.

It's stupid to compare stats in the 800cc era only when Stoner was (is) in his prime while Rossi is on his way out. Stoner has 2 800cc championships and seems to be struggling on the 1000s (relative to his 2011 performance). Rossi has adapted not only the change from 500 to 990 but also 990 to 800. You're saying Stoner is better while ignoring the first 6 years of Rossi's 500/990cc campaign? You're just acting like a victim for liking Stoner, when you don't like Stoner, you just hate Rossi.Irony
