It never really hit me how tragic this story is until I watched this. Our hollow knight would have suffered the same fate if it weren't for him taking our place. But he was imprisoned for what must have felt like an eternity, bearing the burden of the infection but over time growing weaker and losing himself. It never struck me why he was stabbing himself during his fight. It was because he wanted it all to stop. He didn't want to fight the little ghost, he wanted to be beaten. But the infection had control over him.

There is a theory that during that phase, it regains control over its body for a few seconds and tries to fight the infection the only way it can: by trying to stop itself from involuntarily killing the one person that can defeat the Radiance.

After the final blow, as the infection uncontrollably spews from its body, THK leans back like it does when it screeches. But no noise comes out. In the Pure Vessel fight, it does a silent battle cry at the beginning of the battle. That’s what its screams sound like. Nothing. In its final moments, it silently screams as its body fails.
