Cheers to a second year of sewing! In this video, I’ll be sharing everything I made in this past year, chatting details, and trying on!
I spent my first year sewing experimenting with new fabrics, and learning as many new skills as I possibly could. My second year sewing was primarily spent tuning up those skills with the goal of making clothes that I will wear daily!
Thank you all for following along and sharing your thoughts, as well as some seriously game changing advice! I can’t wait to continue sharing videos like this one for years to come!

You're really good at picking out fabrics and patterns!!! I'm also a beginner sewist, and my eternal struggle is not being able to visualize fabric as a garment. Anyways, great video! You've inspired me to make more basics for my everyday wardrobe🙂
@madewithrach
@madewithrach 2 ай бұрын
Thank you!! I feel like I kind of struggle with the opposite thing that you do! Haha I can so easily pick up some fabric and know what I want to turn it into, but if I buy a pattern first, it can be so tricky to find the right fabric! Fabric shopping is definitely one of my favorite things about sewing, so it’s no wonder my stash is getting a little out of control. Haha Thanks so much for watching! It’s so great to hear I’ve inspired you!! I know basics aren’t the most exciting things to make, but it feels so good to get dressed and realize “oh! I made my entire outfit today!” ☺️

You are so inspiring and a beautiful sewer, both in choice of fabrics and choice of pattern to make it in. I am a 70ish senior gone back to sewing ..... love watching your videos, and your honesty with different issues and showing us fails you were not happy with.... we need to see that. You have a lovely figure and everything looks good on you.....at my age styles and fabric selections are different to still feel good and look good, taking into consideration body shape changes over the years. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and honesty.....you are a joy to watch, and your pleasant overview and the way you present your projects is so encouraging to try new things..... Keep up the great videos ❤👍

Just found your channel and I must say, that I admire your productivity. As a long time sewer/upcycler I'm so happy to see that you use a variety of differently sourced fabrics. Personally my current fabric obsession is collecting vintage bedding. The colors make me so happy! :-D On another not - rayon isn't actually classed a synthetic. It's made from regenerated wooden fibres. :-)

This was epic and so fun to watch! It must have taken you forever to film and edit. Awesome job. I love your style so much that watching this, I have to keep reminding myself that most of the things you make that look so perfect on you would not suit me at all (I'm a Soft Dramatic in Kibbe). So I can just admire the fantastic wardrobe you're creating without being tempted to add even more things to my ridiculously long to-sew list. It all looks so good! And I love hearing your thoughts about what went well and what could have been better, very helpful to see. Also on the topic of the rose café bustier, I have a very small chest as well, and I don't know if you tried to make it before it was updated or not, but it has interchangable cup sizes now, and if you go off the measurements in there (instead of your normal cup size), it might work! Mine still had a tiny bit of gaping around the armpit, but I just took that in a little and now it's perfect.

My favorite piece is the dress you sewed twice. I think it’s not in this video but in that from last year. (You see I watch your videos more than once🙈). I mean the dress you sewed first in red quilting cotton and then with a grey/white fabric, which you like more than the first version. But you said the instructions are more on the bad side as it doesn’t give much information 😢, no pictures or explanation.😣😣. I will nevertheless buy the instruction (in case I find it), but I have to have much much more practice before I can even try to sew it… I would like to sew almost all the things you sewed. You meet exactly my taste🥰. But where I live you need more winter clothes🥶AND I am too old for most things. But I would like to sew some for my daughter, who is 30. and -thanks God- there are also some warmer shirts which are also awesome. You seem to be a natural sewing queen; every piece looks so perfectly done. And I love watching and listening to you. You are not only beautiful but also so (… uff, I don’t know the English word…) … kind (no, that’s not a nice word which means what I want to say. But maybe you know what I want to say🙏).your videos are just amazing. Thanks for sharing them with us! I am looking forward to watching much more. Otherwise I can speak the existing ones with you😉…. Many many greetings and adoration from Europe…💕, also to your husband and your daughter. Enjoy your life in San Francisco and stay safe.💕💕💕

Really a very first-rate try-on/what I made video. I found your channel with the last one you filmed, and I enjoyed it. Nice collection of very well-made patterns in pretty fabrics. 😊 Also recognized a few fabrics from Joann (I'm a manager at one) - specifically that autumnal splotchy super silky viscose you sewed the mini gathered skirt and top in. I remember seeing it the fabric when it came in, got my standard 3 yards, but ended up returning it because I started to doubt the effectiveness of the hues on my complexion, lol (caramel-colored skin, black hair). But it is so perfect on you! 😊 Have no idea what season I am (burgundy is my absolute favorite color but not certain I look great in it, lol)... it must be useful to know! 😃

Thank you so much!! Oh yes, I’m sure you recognized quite a few! I LOVE that viscose fabric. I still don’t think I’m entirely certain of my color season, but it’s been so helpful to have a general idea of what suits me and what doesn’t! Fortunately, makeup has the ability to help us all become chameleons. Makes wearing my worst colors easier! Haha

Love your makes and great job! I just wanted to mention that the sea green dress probably needed to be hung overnight before finishing. I think you said it was cut on the bias which means it stretches (and probably unevenly). I haven’t seen anyone hang a whole piece of fabric but maybe this is what was needed because the bust area also had some uneven areas? Thank you for sharing your makes!!

Thank you!! And yes, for sure! Unfortunately I didn’t even get that far. 😂 I forgot to mention in the video that I didn’t even end up hemming it because the fit was so wrong! Haha I’ll probably try to make some little adjustments in the hips and redo the top to see if it can work as a dress before just scrapping the top and making a skirt! We’ll see! Thanks for watching!

You asked for an opinion on dying the white linen pants, and suggested some green or teal yourself. I'd suggest chocolate brown, because I think it would fit very well into your existing colour palette. A reddish-orange could also fit in with some of the accents you've been using. The green/teal could be nice, but I think you'll have more fun with a dark brown.

It is super tricky at times, but it really does bring me joy, so it’s worth it! I’m a stay at home mom, so I’m lucky to have the flexibility to find pockets of time throughout the week! I guess my advice would be to start out choosing projects that are relatively simple, but you’re excited about, and to take your time and try to enjoy the process! Once I was comfortable with my machine and following really simple patterns, I started taking on projects that seemed just a little out of my skill level and that’s how I’ve gone about learning new things! It doesn’t always turn out great the first time, and that’s ok! I hope you end up loving it!

Hi Rachel, I discovered your channel recently and absolutely love it! I've been ceative my entire life but just recently started making my own clothes (only made 3 garments up until now), your videos are really inspring and make me want to create an entire wardrobe :). I've been looking at getting a serger (we call them overlockers in the UK) and was wondering, when did you decide to get one in your sewing journey? They seem very useful and one of my next projects I'd like to make is the Monroe turtle neck pattern which might need a serger? Anyway, thank you for creating these videos!
@madewithrach
@madewithrach Ай бұрын
Thank you so much!! It makes me so happy to hear my videos are inspiring you! Sewing is such a rewarding hobby. You get to learn how to make things AND you get to wear cute new clothes all the time?! I hope you end up loving it! I feel like you can get pretty far without a serger, but I started to really want one once I started making clothes I reached for all the time. I feel like my clothes hold up better in the wash when the edges are serged, and I don’t get loose unraveling strings anymore! A serger is magic for knits too, so once I got more comfortable using them, a serger was the cherry on top. You could definitely do the Monroe turtleneck with a standard sewing machine as long as you use a zigzag stitch! I primarily use my serger to just finish edges, and even use my standard sewing machine first on most knits as well. I’ve heard a walking foot helps while using knits on a standard machine to feed fabric through similar to a serger. I need to get one! Thanks so much for watching!

Thank you!! And yes, I totally know what you’re referring to! I think it’s because I had it tucked in in the front and had too many buttons undone, so the collar hung back off my shoulders instead of staying situated on top of them. I tend to wear my oversized button ups like that because I sort of like the laid back ~vibe~ if that makes sense?? I know it’s not how most people like to wear their button ups, but it’s just a silly little thing I do. Haha

Do you find it to be a pain to print your patterns? I'd love a video on how you print your patterns with your printer. For me, it just seems like another frustrating step to add in the long list of steps before you even touch your sewing machine (printing, taping papers together, cutting out pattern, cutting out fabric, pinning pattern to fabric....)

I second this! Everyone has different budgets, different schedules, and different reasons for sewing. It’s my main hobby at the moment, so it consumes most of my hobby budget, as well as my clothing budget. I know I’m probably spending more making my own clothes than I would shopping fast fashion for the same items, but I’m certainly saving money if I’m comparing the cost to shopping many ethical/sustainable fashion brands. I think it lands somewhere in between, which is realistic for me, but obviously not everyone! It’s been fun to find ways to save on fabric too! (Thrifting, liquidation stores, etc.) As a stay at home parent, even though I’m busy, I have a lot of flexibility in my schedule. I pack sewing into about every bit of me time that I possibly can, which is how able to create so much! It’s definitely a tricky balance even for myself to find with the schedule I have, so I feel very lucky to have the time that I do have. I recognize it’s not typical! There will absolutely be seasons in my future where I will have absolutely no time for sewing, so I’m trying to embrace the time I have now! Thanks for watching! ☺️

So just so I understand, with that first dress as an example, you had to pay $16 for the design? Is it worth it in the end with the cost of the fabric and the time it takes to make it?
@madewithrach
@madewithrach 2 ай бұрын
Yes, pretty much! I ordered a pdf pattern and downloaded and printed it out at home. They often come with all sizes included, and you can print them and use them as many times as you want for personal use! For me, it’s totally worth it, especially if it’s a pattern I’ll use to make several garments with. Patterns definitely vary in price, and $16 is on the higher end for me, but oftentimes (not always) the more pricey patterns have really good instructions, which is super helpful since I’m not an expert. And as far as fabric goes, there are very expensive and very cheap ways to buy good quality fabrics. It kind of depends on what your budget looks like, and how much access you have to discount fabric stores and thrift stores- two of my favorite ways to buy fabric! There are definitely more affordable ways to build a wardrobe than sewing it, but I feel like I do save money in some ways if I’m comparing the cost of my clothes to more pricey luxury and ethical brands!
