Howdy, everyone! We have a vintage old-style Australian CR1M 24 hour Ration here for a full review.
This is the one with the czns of food and not modern-style retort pouches. It has seen better days!
The video would have been released last month, but I had major technical difficulties in the first half of the video that finally got fixed when I got home from vacation yesterday.
Hope you all enjoy the review, and thanks so much as always for your incredible support - you all mean so much to me, a main driving force in this endeavor. Thank you again! :-)
-Steve

A.N.Z.A.C = Australian and New Zealand Army Corp. 'In 1915, Australian and New Zealand soldiers formed part of an Allied expedition that set out to capture the Gallipoli Peninsula to open the way to the Black Sea for the Allied navies.' sourced from Wikipedia. ANZAC biscuits and slices came from care packages sent from the home front, made from mostly of coconut, muesli and golden syrup and baked as dry as possible to survive the 6 week sea voyage from Aus/NZ to the battlefront intact. Think sweet hardtac :D

Hey Steve. I used to eat them when i was an Australian army cadet back in the early 2000's. We used the 2000 types and the retort pouch types ( we called them boiler pouches/ packs) Any questions on the CR1Ms or how we cooked / used them or the F.R.E.D. just ask. They usually go bad after 6-8 years. But the chocolate will be ok to eat even when it looks like that. The colored squares are just for quality control in packaging.

The beef tortillini was the pick of the 5 rat packs available at the time I was in the adf. The interest 2 hours later was a bitch but some quick ease fixed that. The chocolate was generally in the state you found it even if the package wasn't holed, you could use the powder to make a chocolate drink with the condensed milk. After 3 or 4 days your stomach had shrunk to the point that 1 pack would last the day. I used to trade the sugar and stuff I didn't like for savory stuff like cheese or the breakfast tin or real toilet paper. Never had a rancid biscuit in 23 years, don't make it known or everyone will want one....... I have had the pleasure of being resupplied with 30 year old 10 man ration packs packed during the Vietnam war. Two choices, dog food type 1 and dog food type 2 and hard biscuits, cheese and chocolate. Strangely most of the contents had survived. As crocodile Dundee once said, "Tastes like shit, but you can live on it". cheers BTW have you figured out the rest of the worlds date system and what ANZAC means yet?

My stepdad was in the Australian Army Reserve in the late 80s and early 90s. We had remnants of these early CR1Ms around the house for a good long while after he left the Reserve. The rations back then could be heated because they were usually issued with a separately-packaged hexamine stove: the hinged metal-cage variety with up to 16 square or rounded hexamine fuel tablets per stove.

In 1986 I joined the Australian Army reserve. I was issued rations dated 1967. The chocolate was white powder held together with thoughts and prayers. The tins were filled with nightmares like “Luncheon Meat, Type 1”. The Biscuits, Cereal (compressed oat biscuits) for breakfast could crack a tooth.

I've never seen those dollar sweets packaged as that. They look like fruit tingles. Scotch fingers are very nice, when they're not rancid and vegemite is awesome. Nestle chocolate isn't as nice as Cadbury, but I'd assume nestle has a contract with a few of their products. It's funny hearing 2000 as vintage, too.

Ah the memories. :) The sweetened condensed milk goes in the coffee and hot chocolate. The sugar goes with the tea (no milk for me) and the Scotch buscuits. The vegemite goes with the canned cheese on the crackers. The main meal cans you bash a dent into the can on the heel of your boot, then toss the can into the campfire. When the dent pops out, it's ready - rake it out of the fire and (holding it with your bush hat) open it up. Point it away from yourself when you pierce the can and work quickly before it explodes. :) The candies and jam biscuits go in the pockets for the march. The chocolate is before you go to sleep.

Yo and the ANZAC bar. Anzac biscuits were around since WW1 baked by the wives and mothers of soldiers. They did not have eggs in them and thus they did not spoil on the way while being delivered in the care packages. Anzac biscuits are made from oatmeal, dessicated coconut, golden syrup and some other bits that I can't remember. They are an important part of Australian culture because they represented our troops in Gallipoli. Great that you enjoyed them. But the lack of eggs are probably why they didn't go rancid.

I live in Australia and what I find interesting is that all of the food products in there are everyday items available to the general public. Banana Berry Candy = Fruit tingles (not to mention they are the coveted speckled ones. those things are rare as hell!) Shrewberry Biscuit = Arnotts Jam Fancies Arnotts Scotch = Part of the Arnotts "Classics" range Musli Bar = Uncle Toby's Anzac Bar = National iconic biscuit, they are cocaine in a biscuit Chocolate = Generic Nestle Chocolate (Australian > American Chocolate btw) I could go on... Correct me if I'm wrong but it always seemed like the food in most of these rations are specifically manufactured for this type of thing and can not be obtained commercially.
@Disturbed4288
@Disturbed4288 8 жыл бұрын
+Steve1989 MREinfo In response to the Candy, Fruit Tingles themselves are easy to come by, you usually get a number of various different colors and flavors in each pack, but your lucky if you get even one speckled in a pack. If you managed to get 2 in one pack you needed to go buy a lottery ticket. It's kinda like buying a fruit salad in a can and hitting jackpot when you get multiple cherries.

I was going to say, because it always leaves you hungry, but as Steve says, if you are actively out on maneuvers or whatever you sould eat basically all of it, so that wouldn't be a downside. Maybe it's the need for hot water? Or because other than the sodium ramen noodles are nutritionally valueless?

Not sure if anyone already answered on this video, Sir. But ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps.. It was originally used in WW1 and often is applied to those brave lads that went over to Gallipoli and fought in the Middle Eastern theatre. Mostly against the (then) Ottoman Empire. ANZAC Day is very popular in my family (April 25th), as are most Soldier Days (as I call them) Remembrance Day, Veterans Day, etc.. Thank you and Bless to all that have served. Regardless of nation, rank or station. Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines of every country! Bless you All!

Hope you're doing ok after that science experiment Steve, they were issuing these rations to us recruits back in 2004. Mine was a year past its used by date and it was gnarly even back then. At least the M&Ms were good and the dollar store lifesavers, I'd trade a meal can for the M&Ms and just mong on them for the week I was out in the field. Anyways cheers for the trip down memory lane.
