History of the World Part 1 will FOREVER be my favorite comedy. I was 10 years old when I saw it, me and my friends could recite it verbatim. At 41 i can still recite it verbatim.

Hats Off Entertainment Have you ever seen or heard of that "Boris and Natasha" movie from 1992 ? That would be perfect for an episode of Forgotten Failures.

Rocky and Bullwinkle vibes!

Oh GOD! While I want him to cover it, as I'm FAAAAAR too lazy to bother making a review channel to hack that one to ribbons and would love to see someone else do the heavy lifting, I simultaneously don't want him to be subject to that depressing sack of garbage. It's a crappy Naked Gun cash-in that's by far the WORST of the Jay Ward movies. Worse than Dudley Do-Right. And the sad thing is that it had some great SCTV talent behind it. But as a dyed in the wool Bullwinkle fan, I felt personally insulted by how freaking idiotic the film was. And how they deal with the live action version of Rocky and Bullwinkle in that film... shudder... you'd think Andrea Martin as Rocky would be fun, but it isn't. Not at ALL. I mean, the actual Rocky and Bullwinkle has problems, mainly with the pointless Mary Sue they shoved in, but at least there was a respect for the source material.

I’ll prefer to think that high fidelity, where Harold Ramis plays John Cusack’s father is his last role.

I watched Year One before I was aware of the concept of movies being failures. All I know is that I loved it a lot.

I don’t mind this movie. It’s one of those that you just put on to forget what’s going on in life for the moment. Bad day at work or some bad news you just got. It’s one of those. Makes you chuckle quietly and forget for just a little.

I may get raked over coals for this, but I consider the Judd Apatow era of comedy kinda overrated. I mean, I still like some of the movies from that era so it's not a total loss, but you hit on some of the reasons I got tired really quickly. There were a lot of redundant characters and they set an obnoxious precedent where everyone was sassy with rambly dialogue that felt like they didn't know how to pump the brakes on jokes. If I had a dollar for everyone who thought coming up with stuff extemporaneously automatically made it good, I'd be a wealthy man.

Totally over rated I agree. I had a couple friends raving about how he was a 'genius' and made the funniest films. *So I asked them to QUOTE ONE JOKE from one of his films.* They couldn't.
@mattyt19613 жыл бұрын
I agree, I think part of it is summed up the Kevin Smith quote in the video. A lot of people tried to emulate them, used the same cast, but ultimately came up with movies that weren't as good. Apatow himself included.
@bjones84703 жыл бұрын
I agree 2 or three of them were really funny and the rest were just formulaic. I actually like this film better than most of his.

Man, I love year one. The Abraham jokes, "wait right here, I'll be right back to cut your penises" Isaac being a little, annoying party animal, Cain and Abel scrapping and Cain being a lunatic. The holy of holys, the virgin sacrifices, the cavemen, "ahhhhhhh, oh, wait, that's not my house. That's not my house,...." The movie was terrific, even if it was pretty terrible.

Literally the only thing I remember about this film, the ONLY thing, was Jack Black making reference to the concept of a temples Holy of Holy's by calling a penis a Poley of Poley's, and I'm not even 100% sure that happened.

The only thing I remember about this movie was one of the strangest marketing attempts aimed at a niche audience; way back in the day, I used to frequent Gaia Online, which was an anime-themed forum website that had a focus on making custom avatars with cool accessories and whatnot. One day, when this movie was coming out, they sent users on the site an ad to try and get folks to get excited for this funny new movie, and they made a unique set of ancient armor that matched what characters would wear in the film. It was such a strange attempt to draw attention from a userbase largely made of teens who liked anime, but at least the ad provided a plain-looking sword to contrast a lot of the over-designed weapons the site was littered with, which is honestly why I remember it at all.

The reason '80s comedies worked is they had a funny script to start with, then let the funny actors within that movie add to it. The problem with Feig/Apatow is they have a decent idea but don't take the time to develop the script, instead going the route of "you're funny actors; make something up".
