I recently re-watched this movie and actually enjoyed significantly more than I did when it came out. I think you hit the nail on the head when you said it wasn't bad just disappointing. I remember being very confused and let down after seeing it when it released but seeing it with realistic, lowered expectations helped a lot. It definitely deserves the criticism it gets but I think there's enough moments that work that make it worth a watch.

The holy of holys, the virgin sacrifices, the cavemen, "ahhhhhhh, oh, wait, that's not my house. That's not my house,...." The movie was terrific, even if it was pretty terrible.

Oh GOD! While I want him to cover it, as I'm FAAAAAR too lazy to bother making a review channel to hack that one to ribbons and would love to see someone else do the heavy lifting, I simultaneously don't want him to be subject to that depressing sack of garbage. It's a crappy Naked Gun cash-in that's by far the WORST of the Jay Ward movies. Worse than Dudley Do-Right. And the sad thing is that it had some great SCTV talent behind it. But as a dyed in the wool Bullwinkle fan, I felt personally insulted by how freaking idiotic the film was. And how they deal with the live action version of Rocky and Bullwinkle in that film... shudder... you'd think Andrea Martin as Rocky would be fun, but it isn't. Not at ALL. I mean, the actual Rocky and Bullwinkle has problems, mainly with the pointless Mary Sue they shoved in, but at least there was a respect for the source material.

I may get raked over coals for this, but I consider the Judd Apatow era of comedy kinda overrated. I mean, I still like some of the movies from that era so it's not a total loss, but you hit on some of the reasons I got tired really quickly. There were a lot of redundant characters and they set an obnoxious precedent where everyone was sassy with rambly dialogue that felt like they didn't know how to pump the brakes on jokes. If I had a dollar for everyone who thought coming up with stuff extemporaneously automatically made it good, I'd be a wealthy man.

Improv is fine in a live setting- the audience is part of it, there's a back and forth, and failure can even be part of the fun once that report is established- but when it comes to something permanent, like a film, we want something planned, polished, and refined, with all the excess cut away and the core ideas brought into focus. Digital cameras which could take- cheaply- hours of footage which could be edited- relatively- easily became the norm around that time and the filmmakers of that period probably became a bit drunk with the possibilities, but, you only have to watch a group of famous musicians jamming for an hour to realize that most great performers aren't great because they can invent genius art on the fly, but because they put in massive amounts of time and energy before they perform to bring all of the planets into alignment (so to speak) and craft a vision from chaos of the void. It doesn't matter how talented a comedian or group of comedians are, they can't read each other's minds or predict the future
@williamnoonan7380
@williamnoonan7380 Жыл бұрын
The reason '80s comedies worked is they had a funny script to start with, then let the funny actors within that movie add to it. The problem with Feig/Apatow is they have a decent idea but don't take the time to develop the script, instead going the route of "you're funny actors; make something up".

The only thing I remember about this movie was one of the strangest marketing attempts aimed at a niche audience; way back in the day, I used to frequent Gaia Online, which was an anime-themed forum website that had a focus on making custom avatars with cool accessories and whatnot. One day, when this movie was coming out, they sent users on the site an ad to try and get folks to get excited for this funny new movie, and they made a unique set of ancient armor that matched what characters would wear in the film. It was such a strange attempt to draw attention from a userbase largely made of teens who liked anime, but at least the ad provided a plain-looking sword to contrast a lot of the over-designed weapons the site was littered with, which is honestly why I remember it at all.
