I think saying he's the greatest movie star of all time would be better. Jimmy Stewart and Henry Fonda were better actors from his generation.

There were scores of better actors. He was a star, but not an actor. He was also a reprobate.

Please properly research John Wayne's cancer history, as he had a lung removed years earlier due to cancer diagnosis. At a future date, in the early 1970's, he started smoking again, which he had given up for years while living with one lung. Then, at Mass General Hospital, John Wayne, sadly, was diagnosed with stomach cancer, which he later died from at the hospital at UCLA. Whether his filming of "The Conquerer," two plus decades before his death, in Utah, contributed to his cancer death, who really knows? All the principal actors in this movie who later died of cancer, including the Director, Dick Powell, and main starring actress, Susan Hayward, along with character actress, Agnes Morehead, were all heavy smokers for long periods in their lives, just as many Americans were at that time. Cigarettes, very likely, played a more major role in their cancer deaths than the filming in St. George, Utah...Who knows?

That story has been debunked many times. Of those who got cancer, they all had one thing in common. They were all very heavy smokers. Sometimes, as much as 5 to 6 packs a day. He drank heavily and didn't exercise. His last wife; Pilar confirmed that. So it wasn't just radioactive dirt.

Hollywood strongly promoted smoking in movies and television, in cahoots with big tobacco. The intent was to glamorize it, especially for youth.

While I know that was true, John Wayne didn't develop cancer due to smoking. Did you know that the US military were given free cigarettes during WWI? They were included in their rations. This didn't stop until 1975.

why are you making a point of this? during this period of time everyone smoked.
@katekelly1
@katekelly1 22 күн бұрын
@@terriduderstadt6053 Yes, John Wayne, himself, believed that his smoking was the direct cause of his earlier loss of one lung, surgically removed, due to cancer, years before his death. In fact, he started smoking again, in the early 1970's, and he, himself, realized that his stomach cancer was very likely related to his resumed smoking at that time. Of course, perhaps, he also ate a lot of sushi, i.e., uncooked fish, with his nightly cocktails, as the bacteria in raw fish is also considered a major cause of the high percentage of stomach cancers in Japan.

Thank you for enlightening me to the John Wayne I didn't know about. I had a somewhat biased view as he was a hawkish patriot during the Viet Nam war era. "My country right or wrong" I think by the time he was getting near his day he knew that war was wrong. He knew. Thanks John, many rainy Saturday afternoons your movies saved the day. Didn't matter if it was a war flick or a western, it has John Wayne in it!

I always loved John Wayne. I have 3 pictures of him in my home office. I was shocked and cried when he was killed in "The Cowboys". Of course I knew it was "just" a movie. But, it affected me anyway.

I thought so at first too. He was too macho. He posed too much. Then I started watching some of his movies after talking with a coworker who knew him personally and said he was a good guy. I guess what I liked about him in his movies is that he often portrayed a fearless man but more importantly, a man of honor when dealing with people.
