@@KristiWrightit definitely looks better in the last videos, coming from someone who is a multimedia/audiovisual technician, this channel crushes it! Such great looking composition of the shots themselves, and the color grading too
@andrewrobinsonreviews2 ай бұрын
For the past few months, I've been playing with settings and whatnot because I noticed a difference between my edit file and what KZbin was showing you, at least with respect to image quality and color fidelity. For years, I have been adhering to KZbin's recommended settings with respect to compression color space, etc. Last week, I returned to more D-Cinema or broadcast standards. Wouldn't you know it? The last two KZbin videos have looked better on this platform AFTER compression. The files are huge and take a hot second to upload, but the quality gains for you all are undeniable. Banding looks to be removed, and colors are rendered more accurately. Also, sharpness appears to have improved, which is something I couldn't figure out for weeks, why the KZbin footage looked so soft compared to my edit. Anyway, looks like we've got it sorted now. Thanks for noticing!
@txerapng2 ай бұрын
@@andrewrobinsonreviews yeah, the KZbin standards don’t really work great with the platform itself. I have only experienced it with audio, their audio recommendations don’t really sound great, I’ve been experimenting for a while myself and yeah, sometimes you gotta mess around and find out.

Crazy that this review has had such a small amount of views(meanwhile that junkie Onkyo stereo receiver has double). It was a great/accurate review. Highlights an issue we all suffer from in this hobby…chasing the next best thing. Personally I am glad they keep long production periods. To my knowledge the price has changed little during this period of high inflation. Seems like every 5 minutes a new streamer/dac/receiver drops. And is hot for 6 months. Then forgotten. Quality products like this, and the Mac pair you just reviewed should having staying power. I have had my STR for 3+ years and still enjoy it with no immediate plans for change. Toss in a Node 130 streamer with eARC and you are good.

Thank Andrew for this review, it was very timely for me as i just purchased the STR a few days ago and have been determined to get the ARC setup right over that time. Yet what i have found is for music i like arc off as it seems more alive even when only eqing below 400hz. Then i started questioning if i have invested in the right amp if i wasnt ending up using ARC. Was the amplification quality of the STR and overall sound of a quality that stood up to the competition. Even without ARC i really enjoy this amp more so yhan the hegal h190 I tested. Reviews are very few and far between on the STR and there are lots of naysayers due to anthems wider product range than just stereo hifi. Great to see social proof that my ears arnt deceiving me. I have decided to keep mine.

@stevenrussell5085 had the exact same thoughts, I got my STR 3 months ago. Have settled on analog mode for serious listening but ARC works a treat for TV and movies, excellent control of the dual subs. The Anthem DAC is definitely showing it's age, but the amplifier is a beast. Enjoy!

Great review on what appears to be an amazing hi-fi amp. I have to give Anthem props for not updating this year after year, adding wi-fi/BT capabilities and raising the price, then adding streaming and raising the price again, then adding a digital display and raising the price yet again. In a world where companies do this regularly in an attempt to stay relevant, it is refreshing to find something that is made to a standard that stands the test of time. Hopefully this will go on significant sale when the new Anthem amp with all the updated tech is introduced, so that I may be able to afford to purchase this one.

I downsized after 18 years of listening to a vintage McIntosh C28 pre with a MC2205 power amp, to the Anthem STR. This was during Covid 2020 and was lucky to get the STR before the factory shutdown, also before the chip factory fire in Japan. Thereafter, Anthem orders were held waiting for those chips. You would think there would be more companies making chips on the planet. Anyways I haven't looked back and I'm enjoying this new gear for 2 channel music only. Your review was right-on Andrew, you know more about my STR than I do, as I don't use it to its full potential, to be perfectly honest.

It's not like the tech has changed in that time, it's still the best deal in audio with the ARC Genesis, which is a game changer. I don't personally require any updates to the STR from when it came out to current offerings. Neutrality is a strong point of the Anthem. Mcintosh better known for a "house sound" some like, some don't.

This such a great idea! I feel like the majority industry has become an exercise in marketing. And not a good one. It’s all based on forcing you to want to switch, rather than appreciate what you have. I think going back to some older products is an awesome way to show that you don’t need to “upgrade” or update your system. So long you’re happy with it, that’s all that matters. You can’t miss out on the things you didn’t know you didn’t have or need. Part of the reason I haven’t replaced my dead Rotel still, it’s hard to go back from it to anything else for me, it’s so good. Only thing missing is HDMI and streaming built in. I think this review is literally the perfect conversation on your channels moto. Absolutely love it. Would you be willing to bring a few more reviews like this of some legacy items and equipment? I know you have to bring new products to the channel, it’s not an option not to. But it’s also a great way to look from a different perspective at the industry and this hobby. Great review and hope everyone is having a lovely Sunday!

I think we may do a few more reviews like this in the future. What I'd love to tackle more head-on is whether or not you need to upgrade to, say, a V2 by having a V1 in our possession for a direct comparison. Obviously, we'd have to do this (likely) on our own and by purchasing the previous-gen model, but I think every once in a while, it could be a good value add for viewers.

For two channel purists (read no dsp) the STR is a star in the used market. At under $3K (used) add a current high quality dac with a built in rendered (streamer with no app), and you will far surpass any all in one currently in the market under $10K. Eg. STR with Gustard a26/r26; STR with Holo Red streamer &Cyan.r2r dac. Note: Purists rely on extensive room treatment and proper speaker placement set up. As such a dedicated listening room is ideal. Otherwise, as Andrew suggested, use STR as a processor or as a very good modern Integrated.

As always, great video! I love all your videos, but especially love it when you touch on some of my favored gear such as Paradigm, Martin Logan, KEF, Arcam, and Anthem! I am curious about your thoughts on this vs the Arcam A25. I personally heard my Persona 3f at the shop where I bought them on the STR Integrated. However, when I got them home and finally set up well, I actually preferred the Class G Arcam SA30 and even the also Class G SA20. The A25 is closer to the SA20 as it lacks the HDMI ARC and Dirac that the SA30 has. Also it is closer to the 90 wpc SA20 than the 130 wpc SA30 at 100 wpc, though the differences among these ratings only result in a miniscule spread of slightly less than 1 dB (though other differences in amp capabilities as always can mean much more to the sound). To me they were differing levels of audio nirvana, but to my ears the SA30 and SA20 (virtually identical to each other) were slightly superior to the STR. It seems you have to a degree dismissed the A25 due to the SA35 and SA45 coming soon, but MSRP of the A25 at $1,499 is way below the SA35 at $3,499 and SA45 at $4,999. Somewhere along the line I think you lowered those MSRPs of the new options in your mind based on some comments in other videos. You do still occasionally give it positive comments in comparison sections of some videos, but still feel like you have somewhat indicated that the better SA duo make it obsolete, but the giant price gulf keeps that from being the case in my opinion. I am looking forward to a future review of the SA Arcam variants! Pricey for sure, but even the SA45 matches the current STR price, but with seemingly everything you ask for from the STR II, but already coming soon.

Great review, but… 1) Regarding the “lean” sound, this could be the default correction curve in ARC Genesis. The recommended settings tend to be light in bass, but upping the Deep Bass Boost and Room Gain (mid-bass) remedies this and you get a much warmer sound with as much bass as you desire. 2) The displayed room correction results you called “exceptional” are overly optimistic (aka BS). If you want to see what ARC really does you need to use Quick Measure after the adjustments are completed. Measure a speaker without ARC, click “Take a Snapshot”, then toggle on the ARC Corrections and remeasure. You’ll see that ARC corrects the biggest peaks and valleys, but it’s nowhere near the projected green line. I think the results sound fantastic, but that display you referenced can be deceiving.

New preamps drive me crazy with the scrolling type input selection! I’m very spoiled by my old Anthem D2V which has direct-access input selection on both the front panel and the remote. This is SO much more efficient than scrolling thru multiple inputs, looking for the one you want. This is a deal breaker for my wife. She’d divorce me if I made the audio system ANY more difficult to configure! Are little buttons really such a precious commodity that manufacturers cannot provide them?

I've compared them back to back. Maybe it was just me but it wasn't even close. The STR wins hands down. The lack of clarity in the Rotel was disappointing in comparison.

Hi to both of you, I owned the MRX 740 8K and love it. Thank you for that review. For the STR, I am curious to see what the sound difference would be from the michi X3? I am considering buying the X3 but the STR could also be a good contender. What's your perspective of their sound differences?

I owned the M3 and believe the Anthem is much more powerful with a more transparent DAC. You will like the app for control versus a remote.

This review came at the perfect time. I have a Marantz Cinema 40 + Focal Kanta 2 speakers which I love. For dedicated 2-channel music listening this pairing is great at 70+ dB. But the sound is not quite “all there” at lower volumes. The Marantz just doesn’t have quite enough “command” over my Focals when listening at late night levels. Note that I prefer listening to music in Marantz’ “Direct” mode, with my sub off. So I’ve been researching adding a 2 channel integrated amp with Home Theater passthrough to my system. The integrated would be connected via my Cinema 40’s pre-outs and kept in amp-only mode for TV & movies. But for 2-channel music listening, my phono and streamer would be directly connected to the integrated. How do you think the Anthem STR would do for my situation? Would it drive my Focal Kanta’s appreciably better than my Cinema 40? For music I listen primarily to classic rock and love the house sound of my Marantz, but I really want more substance. Are there any other integrated amps with Home Theater passthrough that you might recommend? I’ve heard the Yamaha S1200, the Hegel H390, the Accuphase 280, and the Mark Levinson 5805. Thanks.

Hey Andrew I had a quick question what is the main reason why someone would get a integrated amplifier over a quality receiver?
@jonkraeme22 ай бұрын
Andrew, I believe the STR is one of the best at 5k or under, so why change it? I have owned the STR for 2 years and after owning numerous 2 Channel integrated amps, my last unit being the Rotel RA-1592 MII, this wasn’t even close. The Anthem sounds fantastic will my Sonus Faber Sonetto 8s. Not one integrated offers a refined DAC, ARC, or has its own app to control the unit at this price. (App control you never mentioned). My next integrated will have to be twice the price to be a true upgrade.
@movie_av_impulse2 ай бұрын
Sounds like even in a lot of different comparisons the STR is still a better choice. Me personally if you are using it as an amplifier. I really don't feel it needs all the gadgets and all the latest tech. It is just strictly an amplifier to push power And increase volume. So the need to really have any kind of streaming or anything like that. I just don't understand why you would even want it. Just my opinion

Hello Andrew Another very interesting review, even if I'm not in the market for an amplifier because I'm very happy with what I have. You insisted quite a lot on room correction, it seems great, but honestly I have a lot of reservations about it. I had the opportunity to listena system with a preamplifier from Anthem, I think the model was 740, the owner had some room problems and was using ARC, was OK but the owner was not completely satisfied so he solved the problem with an vintage 24 channels EQ, and it was much better. You have an Eversolo A8 which also has DSP, there is also Roon (I don't know if you use it) which also has DSP, so my question would be which do you think is better, with ARC, with DSP integrated in the streamer or DAC or with Ron?

I purchased the Anthem STR Integrated 4 years ago, paired with Totem Acoustic Tribe V speakers and Roon Nucleus streamer. This has proved to be a great system for watching TV and also good for music. I ran the room correction several times before getting it the way I liked. There are You Tube videos that explain how to effectively run the room correction software. Because Anthem also uses the room correction software on other amplifiers and speakers they continue to improve the software. This week I updated the software and reran the process because I changed my couch. It has never sounded better. 14:31 Last month I purchased my second Sony Bravia 8 77" OLED as part of the system, but that is another story to tell when you review that product.

I like it. It seems like a product that will outlast me and I can pass on. I don’t care too much about the streaming part since I’m sure streaming tech will change in the future and at some point the firmwares will stop.

Do you think the MRX1140 holds any weight against the STR? do you think the STR (in sound quality only) would be a significant upgrade compared to the MRX1140?
