@DirtFlyer
@DirtFlyer 3 жыл бұрын
The vast majority of water goes to agriculture, at about 75 to 85 percent of all water allocated. Conservation measures have already been put in place in many western cities and states. It's getting to the point where water conservation in urban areas will have little effect. If the drought continues, soon many California farmers will be without water completely when their wells go dry, or ground subsidence gets so bad as to make farm land unusable.

Many rivers on the West Coast enter the sea from a canyon. Dam up the entry point with a reservoir and catch that water before it runs into the sea. You don't take from those depending on the flow upstream but you don't let it become wasted either.

The closing text (14:24) says the drought ended in 2019. But at the time what I had heard is that it would take years of rain. So. don’t let up a water conservation. Was it over? Is it over? And the vid did include comments in the Colorado basin. Was the drought ‘over’ in the west, the CO basin? Or just a relief in California Central Valley? Has the water table rebounded? Need a part 2.

No mention of the $7.5 Billion Water Bond measure from 2014? Money spent on 'ecosystem restoration', undeserved communities, green issues, etc. "Funding for new water storage projects-which involve long lead times-has been the slowest out the door; just over $150 million of the $2.7 billion authorized has been spent, though most remaining funds are now earmarked for seven qualifying projects." New Sites Reservoir - off river - only partly funded, and now reduced in planned size by HALF. Why doesn't Newsom fully fund it?

@Michilar

The rain that we are getting is not sufficient to refill the aquifers that were depleted during the drought years. You heard the one farmer say he had to drill down 800 feet to hit water to irrigate his plants, whereas before he only had to drill down 60 feet in years back. The same thing is happening in Iowa with the Ogalla Aquifer. Humans are using water like drunken sailors. The rainfall, most of which just flows to the ocean because of all the damn concrete, pavement, etc, is only one of the things to look at. More important is the stuff underground.
@OttoBoy
@OttoBoy 3 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, one year is not enough to replenish the water depleted over decades of intensive use. Full reservoirs are temporary. Aquifers are still drastically low. More importantly, long term climate patterns are potentially causing permanent desertification.

@@larrytaylor693 My answer was a simple idea to try to get people thinking about how to harvest rainwater. First we have to harvest all rainwater in a way to get the all rainwater to be absorbed into the ground. When we can get the rainwater 24 to 36 inches into the soil, the rainwater will start to raise the groundwater levels enough to start farm activity after a couple of years of rainfall. The depth of the capture of rainfall is vital. If you leave it on surface or 12 inches into the ground, the rainwater will be evaporated by the sun and the wind. The way to do this is to subsoil plow all available land, especially around your well area. When this rainwater is absorbed, the ground will start to grow vegetation. This vegetation will help keep the soil from getting too dry and start to cool the land. After a couple of rainy years, this vegetation will start to release water vapor into the atmosphere, when there enough water vapor in the atmosphere , it will rain when the humidity is correct and the temperature is correct. Watch you tube video "Deep Soil Ripping for Water Conservation" by Megan Clayton to understand the idea.

There's not a water shortage, there's a water usage problem. Limit the water intensive farms (farm irrigation is top user). stop landscaping desert homes with grass that requires sprinklers (just one of many easy ways to save water). Does everyone really need to waste so much water? average person can limit shower length, fix leaking plumbing, etc and it adds up fast. The aquafors are being drained and nobody seems to care. Environmental impact is going to be devastated ecosystems.

The very first interview was with a typical industrialized farmer that monocrops the land with GMO corn, not to feed humans, but to feed animals and produce fuel. The soil has been converted to dirt and there is no microbiome left. The ground cover that holds water is completely nonexistent. Although there are some very wasteful watering techniques for some plant foods, such as almonds, animal agriculture is immensely more water intensive. The only reason most people can afford to eat wasteful foods like bacon cheeseburgers is that the animal agriculture industry is the most heavily government subsidized industry. If you're not currently vegan, you will be eventually. It might not be your choice, it will be a matter of economics.

So, it is even worse now. The movie doesn’t touch on the most important subject. What kinds of food uses the most water? Will USA continue to eat the way it does until the water is out or will it change it’s diet? Eating meat uses up to 100 times more water than plants and it takes 60 times more CO2 to produce beef compared to potatoes. And before you mention protein, deficiency of protein is almost impossible so long as you are not starving. But deficiency of vitamins is actually getting more common in the west. So, the question is, will a politician eventually dare to mention this in USA, the land of meat?

According to the Nebraska Agriculture Extension, it takes ~1,800 gallons of water to produce one pound of beef. The average cow consumes 1-2 gallons of water per day per 100 pounds of body weight; lactating cows can consume twice that much water per day. Whereas, it takes ~216 gallons of water to produce one pound of soybeans and ~108 gallons of water to produce one pound of corn. Humans can survive just fine, even better, without beef and diary products. The point is that cattle ranches and dairy farms in the south west need to cease farming immediately until such time that the drought is over. Here we are four years later and it's much worse. So, who's going to get the last drop of water, a human or a cow?

I always laugh at that statistic. You act as though the water that was used is gone forever and not recycled through the biosphere. As for the corn, do you know what anhydrous Ammonia is? Btw, I live in an area that produces a lot of beef. Your "1-2 gallons per 100lbs" a day is BS. So you go ahead and survive just fine on soy and corn. Let me know how that turns out for you. And get rid of your electron neutrino symbol until you learn how to parse an argument all the way through to completion without cherry picking your facts. We don't do that in physics.

Blame climate change, or whatever you want. It would have been beneficial to point out that the CA governments response in concert with power & money hungry environmental groups funded by our tax dollars contributes heavily to this problem. We have funds for water infrastructure, but good luck getting large projects started. We have water north, but good luck transporting, treating, or storing it. We have water in the south, but good luck storing it. I build water infrastructure for a living if you're wondering my credentials. Not saying we need to disregard environmental impacts, but the problem is that environmental agencies are incentivized to not work with municipalities and contractors, they are only there to find problems are stop you. This is a management problem, we can't change the climate or weather.

I'm looking at the bare fields of those farmers and telling myself, no wonder the world is so jacked up. Those fields are probably devoid of carbon, the stuff that holds on to water when it does fall. That soil looks devoid of organic matter. Fix the soil first instead of spending thousands of dollars drilling wells that are eventually going to go dry anyway. Such terrible land management. Cover crop those fields (and yes, there are drought tolerant cover crops) or at the very least leave some residue so they are not bare and exposed to the sun.

@Michilar
@Michilar 4 жыл бұрын
@@nansealove9000 Sudangrass and Sorghum are 2 that are drought resistant. Cowpeas are as well, and will add nitrogen to the soil. Yes, all of those do need some initial water, but when established, they can take heat And drought. There are others as well, but those are the 3 that I can think of right off the bat. Of course, in the fall/winter months there are lots of cover crops that will grow with cooler temperatures and whatever rainfall comes. Even during the drought years, we still got some rain and it was enough to grow cover crops. Especially cover crop 'cocktails.' Leaving soil bare like that just causes loss of carbon, which in turn causes more need for irrigation.

Plants free of water deficit events more efficiently absorb available plant nutrients enabling plants to achieve their maximum genetic potential. SWRT membranes installed below plant root systems retain water where it falls, providing continuous delivery of drought-free periods up to 3 times longer than intensely irrigated control sands without root zone water retention membranes (Guber et al, 2016).
