So funny: 'Everyone looks like Henry Cavill!'. Especially, when Albert IS played by Henry Cavill (btw, his first casting). And earlier at the beginning of the movie 'Edmond looks like Henry Cavill!'. So it was the perfect casting of Henry Cavill as son!

Why didn't Dumas make an Edmond and Mercedes ending together? Alexandre Dumas read Homer (Dumas A., Mes Mémoires, Paris, Bouquins, 2003, p. 590)) and The Odyssey influenced the book The Count of Monte Cristo. In Book IV of The Odyssey, Telemachus visits Menelaus who won Helen back after his elopement with Paris. Helen was sorry for what she did, but still Menelaus needed to use drugs to forget his painful memories like Helen's union with Paris. This influenced Alexandre Dumas. Edmond would never be happy with Mercedes and would never forget her marriage to Fernand. This would always make him have painful memories. Their marriage would be deeply unhappy. Haydee does not bring the count the painful memories that Mercedes does. More realistic for him to be happy with Haydée.

I like this retelling of the story. IMO, this is one of the great tales in literature that should never be forgotten. If you are a book reader, read this book, plus of course the The Musketeers books by the same author (Dumas). The book is great, but this movie is terrible. Very narcissistic on the part of the screenwriter to believe in changing the story completely. especially thinking about a man reconciling with his ex-fiancée who married the man who ruined his life. The woman had to be very narcissistic to believe that a man would accept a new beginning after she had sex with her enemy. On June 28th, the French adaptation with Pierre Niney opens in cinemas.

The film is mediocre and poorly written. Even an artificial intelligence could write a better script than Jay Wolpert. Alexandre Dumas read Homer (Dumas A., Mes Mémoires, Paris, Bouquins, 2003, p. 590) and The Odyssey influenced the story. The count of Monte Chrysot works with the premise of how Ulysses would act if Penelope had gotten married to one of the pretndenes. He would never take her back and would marry Princess Nausicaa who is personified by Haydee. Not even the existence of Telemachus would prevent Ulysses from repudiating if Penelope married one of the suitors. Fortunately, in 2024 we will have a miniseries with Sam Claflin.

Pretty okay reaction to an awesome movie. As a friendly FYI, although this movie was based on the 1830s novel by black French author Alexander Dumas, this adaptation was made for American audiences which is why the filmmakers decided not to go heavy with French accents. That decision was the director's choice. The author is the same one who also wrote "The Three Musketeers" and "The Man In The Iron Mask" in the 1830s. Also, the name 'Mercedes' was a common name in Europe long before cars were invented. Btw, just 2 years later in 2004, the same actor (Jim Caviezel) who played the role of Edmund Dantes/The Count of Monte Cristo, also played the role of Jesus in the Mel Gibson movie "The Passion of The Christ"....a movie where he was also beaten and tortured. There have been many Hollywood movie adaptations of the novel "The Count of Monte Cristo", at least since the 1930s. This 2002 version is one of my favs. But another adaptation of the "TCOMC" that I still love and occasionally binge-watch, is the modern TV adaptation from ABC Network called "Revenge", which aired for 4 seasons from 2011 to 2015. It was based on the present era, with most of the storyline centered in the Hamptons, Long Island (NY). GREAT TV series..."Revenge". Also, I'm not sure if you realized it...but the young actor who played the role of his 16-year old son, 'Albert', is actually actor Henry Cavill who went on to play Clark Kent/Superman in the DC Universe movies over 10 years later ('Man of Steel", 'Batman vs Superman", 'Justice League').

I have watched several reactions to this, and am enjoying your take on it. You’re the first reactor I’ve seen that figured out Albert is Edmond’s son so very early, and just by spotting the resemblance. Now, some comments: The guard that shot at Edmond when he was riding away to flee, near the beginning, was not a bad shot. Flintlock guns have a delay between the pull of the trigger and the ignition of the main powder charge, so shooting a fast moving target is NOT easy. There are several reasons why it was so hard for his old associates to recognize Edmond. First, everyone thought he was dead, they would not ever expect to see him. He’s 16 years older. Yes, the facial hair is part of it, but a small part. Most importantly, all of his mannerisms are wildly different than when he was young, naive Edmond Dantes. His bearing, the set of his face, how he looks at people, how he talks, all different, all played to his role as the wildly rich Count of Monte Cristo.

(Dave Strong) --- Count of Monte Cristo (2002) with Jim Caviezel is the HAPPY reunion version for Mercedes and most of the fans of the story. The NOVEL (and other movie versions) has the Count of Monte Cristo separating from Mercedes at the end and instead lives his life with Haydee (the daughter of Ali Pasha) whom he rescued from slavery. It's assumed that Edmund and Haydee marry with a happy ending.

While this is an excellent movie, I highly recommend reading the book which is one of the best books ever written. Though don't read it thinking it will have the same Hollywood ending.

Or anything in common with the film at all.

Aside from keeping the majority of names the same, this film has nothing in common with the book. Anyone that thinks The Count of Monte Cristo is a revenge story, has never read the book.

There's the 1988 adaptation that has Benedetto, Damglars' bankruptcy, Haydee testifying. The ending is Count and Haydee together. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jYW4p5trf8mFrcU

One thing I never understood was why Napoleon ordered the priest to burn down a church full of gorillas. That never made any sense to me

If you don’t mind my asking, where is your accent from? If you’ve ever heard mine, I’d be intrigued to find out where you think I’m from 🤞🏽
