Hello my beloved discus family. It's been a while and was tough to keep head above water with all the diseases entering South Africa via the import market. I scaled down my full time fish rooms and will hopefully have more time for KZbin videos. I focused less on editing and just provided some content. If you feel this content was great, consider subbing and joining my discus family.

Very Happy to see you back !!! great video as usual. Thank you D.D. !!! Going through this sort of thig myself. 2 out of my three yellow Discus have turned full orange in just a few months (even though they kept their white and/or black markings). It is definitely the type(s) of food I was feeding them. Thanks again.

Yes I often see in Marlboros, Red whites, or Yellow whites or Snow leopards or Red Eruptions that the faces stay light and the rest of the body is affected.

Helpful video divana! can you tell me what to do if my New discus is not eating ? Bought 5 discus for my 120 gallon aquarium And they’re not eating the food I give,Even tho they pick at the subtrate and are very active when I close the light but they seem to ignore the frozen brine shrimp I give them. Thank you

Hello AH how long have you had them? Often discus won't eat when stressed - moving them can cause the stress to stay in their systems for more than 4 days! So their appetite will be less. Also, discus are used to the food they used to eat - almost like a palatability issue. Eventualy when they get hungry enough, they will eat if they're healthy. Sometimss they eat as soon as you leave - they're very smart. Lastly, a fear issue also stops eating. If they're scared of you, they won't eat like pirhanas 😃

Try accessing the exact same food your shop or supplier used - that also works.

So do you think that it's not possible to keep red melons and yellow melons together in the same tank long term without one or the other turning orange? I ask because if the red melons don't get enough carotenoids, then their red tends to fade to orange.

I heard that the albino golden strain isn’t amenable for turning orange. True?
@discusdivana7581
@discusdivana7581 Жыл бұрын
Hi! It is true to most extent yes because they lack some of the yellow pigment under their skin that yellow melons have. So carotenoids aren't absorb as much to reveal the orange colour because that top pigment layer is not there. Like ghosts or snow white discus. They don't turn orange or red. But fed enough carotenoids, you may see a pinkish shimmer develop on their bodies. 🙂

Thanks! Are there also albino golden checkerboard or only solid golden? I had a discus tank but sold it. Regret it till this day! Maybe I will buy a new tank.

Can you reverse it once they have already turned orange? Mine is bright orange now. What commercial food do you recommend? Thanks!
@discusdivana7581
@discusdivana7581 2 жыл бұрын
Hi there, yes you can reverse it to some extent. Because the discus's bodies absorb it from the inside, they deposit these carotenoids from their blood vessels to underneath the skin. So when you stop feeding these carotenoids, the continuous deposit under the skin stops. The discus can go lighter, to a golden colour but I have never seen deep orange discus return to that bright pure yellow again. But you can make them golden for sure, which is almost yellow!

@discusdivana7581

Hello Razvan, thanks for watching. The black points or spots you refer to are probably peppering in the face. These are deeper underlying pigment that can lighten or darken in your tank. Try lighter sand, or barebottom, or a brighter cool white light to help lighten the black spots. If the black is in the fins, that is genetic and not much can be done to lighten it. The Eastern farms sometimes have the loveliest discus and often the black in the fins are a trait that the fish come from those farms. It's genetic and a beauty of its own.

Hello Ashley! It sounds like a severe case of either liver/kidney damage or possibly affected malnutrition from a resistant intestinal flagellate. A parasite. There are many different types that are microscopic - it is less likely to be a worm, rather a protozoa or flagellate. If you used metronidazole, I find it is not the answer. If the belly is sunken in, then it hasn't eaten in a long time and already severely affected. I use either Octozin, Octocil or Dimetridazole antibiotics for such a severe case. I keep the fish in freshwater with epsom salts at 1 tbsp per 40 litres, with 80mg/l dimetridazole replaced daily 50% for 5 days. A very warm temperature in this case increases the survival of the fish. 32 degrees celcius and lots of oxygen. The discus will not touch any dry harsh common commercial foods or any foods rich in protein (40%). Almost like you do not want to eat a full plate of food when you are nautious. Try feeding brine shrimp, or mosquito larvae if you can find, or black worms, but not earthworms. Last resort is good quality bloodworms - discus often go for this. I avoid bloodworms in general but last resort this works. Plain rinsed bloodworms. Then I move onto garlic bloodworms, and then frozen fish mix I make myself. I use hake, spinach, garlic and wormwood (if you can find wormwood) in their frozen foods. I blend it all together and feed a small cube once a day until the discus eats more.

Ashley, if the discus is really skinny, often you cannot get the fish back to a fat fish again. If the discus is so skinny that you can see its facial bones, this is called Razor back and too late. But you can make it stronger to eat again. I hope this helps your little boy or girl. Lots of love.
