I’m lucky to hear these twice a year as they migrate (I’m guessing that’s what they do). Guess what I just heard this morning! :’D

Yep, at least in Canberra, they fly off into the brindabellas in summer and come back down in winter

Just heard one fly over my house; in semi-inner-east Melbourne. That's a first for me in this area I think.

Same here a few times then they seemed to be at a nearby park a week or so later around lunch time - I didn't get a chance to go and see them when they were around but I'm sure it was them. Haven't heard them for a week or 2 so maybe that's it.

Every time I hear one fly over my house I have to rush out to see them. I live on the bushy outskirts of Sydney and even there they are very elusive ! A few days ago for the very first time one landed on my property......I was so excited and captured some great photos !

Its always nice to hear and see them. They are fairly common visitors here because we have a radiata pine and they like to eat the cones.

Birds of the Huon Tasmania .....You are very lucky to have them close all the time. We have many native bush birds all of the time, but the black cockatoos seem to be much more shy, so I think they come in a little closer to us at this time of year to feed on the banksia and grevillea flowers which are abundant now. 😊

We saw one and heard a few in the Gold Coast yesterday. I’ve never seen them before
@BirdsoftheHuonTasmania3 жыл бұрын
They are technically a different subspecies up there, but very similar to the ones here in Tasmania.
@JohnGardnerAlhadis3 жыл бұрын
Fun fact: these birds are also known as "funeral cockatoos" due to their mournful calls and dark feathers.

There’s 2 of these that eat our macadamia nuts, whenever they do their call our cockatiels go crazy. They absolutely love them

.....when we still had warm weather there were black coloured birds flying overhead during darker part of dusk . I was thinking they might be the black cockatoos,, I'm falling myself this is the type of call they were making. The white cockatoos also call out while flying . Crows call out . But I know these birds well . Not in a spot were we see them frequently. There's a pine plantation for the direction I've seen these black birds heading . Once a year when two might land in a blackwood tree in my yard , they never stay longer than fifteen minutes . They're not interested in the ' berries ' of the cypress trees but the white cockatoos are as are the possums . Cypress trees are a type of juniper tree . When cones are immature they are like berries .

They were calling a lot between Huonville and Franklin today. Maybe because rain is supposed to be on the way tomorrow ...

.....that's a lot of black cockatoos . I never thought they could he massed in such numbers and most they're obviously breeding too .They need suitable big tree hollows to raise young otherwise no deal . They also seem to like the northern hemisphere pine trees .
@BirdsoftheHuonTasmania3 жыл бұрын
I see a flock like that about once a year. A flock of 50 went over a couple of weeks ago. They love chewing on the cones in the Radiata Pine plantations that exist for paper production.

I only hear these birds before it rains. There could be some correlation. That sound is so hauntingly beautiful along with currawongs
@BirdsoftheHuonTasmania Жыл бұрын
Some people think they leave higher areas when rain is coming, but they visit here at random times regardless of the weather. They do have one of the nicest calls of any Australian bird.

@@BirdsoftheHuonTasmania 100% an eerie haunting beautiful sound. Back in school it was the only bird to grab everyones attention when it flew past. great birds
