For me, the scene in Phantom Thread where Woodcock's mother suddenly appears as he is 'tripping' on Alma's shrooms is the best ghost reveal since the twins in the doorway the first time Danny sees them in The Shining. No one can nod to Kubrick the way PTA can!

The biggest surprises for me are the popcorn films Don’t Breathe and A Quiet Place, deeper cuts like Southbound and The Strangers, and the completely off-the-wall Eli Roth and Rob Zombie selections. The rest are what you’d expect: every so-called “elevated” horror film present and accounted for. Would have been very interesting to hear what PTA liked about all of these films. Particularly Hostel 2 and Halloween 2.

I really enjoyed the Babadook. I liked the way the cinematographer shined lights through the windows during the creepy night scenes. Gives it a very eerie Lynchian feel to it.

I think he's shown a few times in his films he could make a great horror film, he seems to have an eye or a feel for it at least. A lot of There Will Be Blood feels tonally like horror at times, and the score is almost treating it like one. And there's a scene in Phantom Thread where Reynolds dead mother appears in some ghostly, hallucinatory fashion that feels incredibly eerie and unnerving.

It may not technically be a horror film, but Eraserhead is the most terrifying and disturbing film I have ever seen. One time, I watched it with my girlfriend and it freaked her out so much that I had to turn it off halfway through. And this girl loved scary movies, she loved jumping out of her seat, but she couldn’t deal with Eraserhead. When you realize what that film is about, it gets under your skin like nothing else.

Lately, I have watched couple of videos talking about famous directors' favourite film and I can't help but notice that they are all from America....I don't know...I love american movies, hell, I wanted to live in America since I was 13 just because I love the way america changed movie industry, but I would expect something more of people like PTA or David Fincher...there is a loooot of great films from Asia and Europe and it seems that only older directors like Spielberg and Scorsese know about them....with the exception of Tarantino but he is one of a kind, isn't he? Also, I am a little bit taken aback by the fact that there is no mention of The Thing 1982 and Texas Massacre 1974....those are alongside with Videodrome my 3 most favourite horror movies....and when I am mentioning Videodrome...why there is no film from Cronenberg? Cronenberg is like a....fokin genius :D

Lost me at Eli Roth and Halloween 2. Most movies, even if I don't like them, I can see why people would dig them but those picks came straight out of left field. Personally, I would have picked some of the masters of horror. I just watched the shining after a long time in preparation for doctor sleep and with my 10 year old boy, no less. He didn't find it very scary and to be honest I found Nicholson's performance to be pretty comical. Still a cool film, though.

A Quiet Place is one of the worst movies I've had the displeasure of sitting through in the last 25 years, as is The Babadook. Exerable. So utterly illogical it takes my breath away. Wholly agree with your comment. Most of the horror films he likes are junk. A few are terrific.

The Australian Peter Rabbit story is piss funny. I hope that the free tickets they offered were to see Hereditary! Too many parents these days are bringing up their children to be too soft. Any kid worth a grain of ground brains, would be buzzing to watch a trailer like that in front of a lame ass wabbit movie!!!

I think all of these are in the top of its genre. I'd say he'd realistically have more older films on his list but all mentioned are without a doubt, "Worthy", of being called the best of.

Was glad to see Hereditary on the list. I just recently watched Ari Astor’s more recent flick Midsommar and it was really great, maybe even better than Hereditary.

I actually couldn’t stand Don’t Breathe. It was unique and different, but it kept every trope (most notably the one-dimensional characters who make obviously bad decisions) that makes horror films predictable and boring.

Well, he definitely has good but conventional taste but the picks are hardly originial. These are almost all horror films for people who don't necessary like the genre itself. And don't get me wrong, I also like most of these films, but still.
